Drevin 0 Posted September 11, 2009 Hello, New to Arkham so I have a noob question. Dread Curse of Azathoth does it work the same when in the final battle? Does it stay in effect for the whole final battle? Thanks
AVEC2 2 Posted September 11, 2009 In the final battle, there's a upkeep phase between each round of combat. You need to recast DCoA and most other combat spells each upkeep phase.
Drevin 0 Posted September 11, 2009 So it only works for one combat round then you have to recast it? So what about in a normal battlewith a ormal monster does it work until combat is done with that monster or does it only work for one round? Thanks
Drevin 0 Posted September 11, 2009 The card says "Any phase, cast and exhaust to gain +9 to all combat checks until the end of thiscombat."
AVEC2 2 Posted September 11, 2009 The final battle works differently than other fights. In the final battle, each investigator gets one combat check, then the AO attacks, then there's a new upkeep phase and the whole thing starts over. I haven't found the rule that says that effects that last "until the end of this combat" apply for only one round in the final battle, but that's the right way to play it. Otherwise, with each upkeep phase in the final battle, you could recast DCoA and get an additional +9 to combat checks, on top of any +9 bonuses that you received from previous castings of the spell. That would be silly.
dj2.0 75 Posted September 11, 2009 avec is right, you see, Upkeep forces you to refresh all your spells, hence you must recast them. Since you have no upkeep in monster combat, you keep adding the spells bonus without needing to recast - so long as you keep devoting hands to it. If you do drop the hands, say switching to another spell, you lose the bonus of the original and cant recast the it because it is exhausted.
Drevin 0 Posted September 11, 2009 But you cant cast it again and still get the +9 from the first spell because it takes 2 hands to keep the spell going.
AVEC2 2 Posted September 11, 2009 Well like I said, there's a rule that covers this. I just can't find it at the moment. It might be in the FAQ.
AVEC2 2 Posted September 11, 2009 Found it. This is from the "Official Answers from Kevin Wilson" thread, above: (Spells) "Cast and exhaust to gain +X to Combat checks until the end of this combat." Examples: Wither, Shrivelling. A spell that gives a combat bonus like this will last until the end of the combat (i.e. for multiple combat rounds until the combat is over) once you cast it. HOWEVER, you must still devote the proper number of hands to keeping the spell going, or it will end. In any case, the spell is exhausted after casting, so it can only be used to fight one monster each turn. Also note that in a battle vs. the Ancient One, you will need to recast the spell each attack, since it gets refreshed and ends between attacks.
