Another reason selfie sticks should be banned universally. (SW Related)

Pervy dicnozzles will find ways to be pervy. Always.

Which is neither an explaination nor an excuse not to enact some form of social sanction against them.

It is neither. But the issue isn't selfie sticks.

This might be Star Wars related in the loosest of terms but not really X-wing related.

Sexual harassment is bad. There, it has been said. Are you happy now?

Now here is a question. What good would posting on this forum an example of the obvious misuse of a product that is not sold by Fantasy Flight Games do? If you see a crime against another person in action you don't call the humane society, you call the police! No one here is responsible for the selfie sticks or the SW celebration. You really should contact the event coordinators or Disney PR.

As someone that was in costume, these things actually made it super nice for the people that wanted legitimate pictures but didn't wanna ask some one to hold their 600+ device to take a picture with me. As a side note, they were used a lot at the booth and other panels to get a better view for the photos a lot of you are probably viewing, so I don't see the harm in them. Though I did laugh to myself when I saw a fellow Mando put a rig set up at the end of his rifle to aaccomplish the same thing while in armor.

The real issue is human decency, which really isn't relavent to this forum.

Isn't there an "off topic" section to this forum? I'd rather see conversations like this here than 100 advertisements for illegal passports. I think this is a conversation that needs to happen on relevant "nerd" forums instead of being brushed to the side.

I think selfie sticks look ridiculous, but I can see their use in some situations. You won't ever see me using one though. I can't imagine someone banning a product because of its potential use, unless that becomes the primary use.

Something to look into for women who may encounter this problem. Some states have already had cases on the topic and it was said that the accused did nothing illegal. I would recommend investigating into the law of a region you wish to go to a con. Then make a decision on either not supporting such an area, or taking precautions to protect yourself. I'm not shaming or blaming the victim here, I think you should be able to wear whatever you want and feel safe doing it, but know that there are bad people out there and being preemptive could be the answer. For example, at the very least, don't go commando.

I see only 3 ways to fix the problem, and I would argue only 1 is possible. First one is requiring all women to dress modestly, this is not a good answer. This is 'Murica and you should wear whatever you want to. Second is to fix the mindset of these men. Hopefully one day there will be balance to the sexualization of our society, but this is a long and slow process. Third, and the only viable solution I see, is for the rest of the community to commit to protecting women around us. In a crowd this packed, someone must notice this going on. Take a stand and say something when you see it happening. I'm sure any convention would be happy to kick someone like this out. I'll be working at gencon and if I see something like this happen, I commit to dragging the offender kicking and screaming to security to be dealt with.

Nope, I'm not happy.

This is part of the larger SW community and the conversation should be had everywhere. Posts like yours offer cover for their behavior by making conversation about it more of a taboo than the creepy act itself. The response to this kind of thing should always be, "That is horrible and completely unacceptable." Not, "Dur, why are we talking about this?"

Practice a few times, engaging your empathy and condemning anti-social behavior makes for stronger communities.

. You really should contact the event coordinators or Disney PR.

Thank you. I just left another forum for going so far off topic with subjects like these.

See the above.

Bull. This kind of conversation dominates message boards and internet articles. People find an instance of a person behaving badly and try to pin it on a community or a fandom and divide that community into those who are sufficiently outraged internet activists, and those who are wondering why X-Wing Miniatures is talking about G** D***** selfie sticks and panty shots.

If you're concerned, then take it up with the event organizers, don't try to turn this message board into your personal army.

@Koing907.

Your bias is showing. There hasn't been a post about social issues in weeks. Moreover I don't see you complaining about the movie or rebels threads. They have nothing to do with the game.

No you quit some other community because they talked about social justice and you apparently don't want to have to deal with that. Must be nice to have the choice.

Me I want the communities I inhabit to be diverse and that only happens when actions that work against diversity are called out as unacceptable.

no one is pining anything on the community. why would you even feel like this targets you in any way? You are speaking out against speaking out about sexual harassment. Do you realize how that makes you look?

Some people just want to live in their shell and not be bothered by things that simply don't bother them. That's fine, and that's why we have an off topic section for the forum. A place where you can go and join in on topics that other x-wing players care about but aren't about x-wing. I suggest not poking the bear and just getting back to the conversation at hand.

Here, I'll start.

What's one thing a convention could do to help cosplayers feel more safe? In the article they had a big sign that had some guild lines on conduct. Of course we'd be naive to think that a simple sign is going to solve the problem, but I bet it helped drive home "we know you're a creep and we don't want you to be creepy and we'll do something if you act creepy".

As a guy, I don't encounter this problem at all so I don't fully understand the problem or even what could be done.

Can we at least agree that selfie sticks, while inherently stupid, are not the problem and should not be banned from cons?

As long as we can add on Hobo's ear clipping as a clause. I like the ear clipping.

For anyone using a selfie stick? Sure!
