Overlap ship while moving off map?

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

Here's an interesting situation that came up today: my friend has his ship in front of mine, I move first.  I planned to ram him, so I didn't pick the maneuver command.  However!  My ship is pointed at an angle towards the edge of the map, my speed was 3, and I discovered when I used the tool that there was no available maneuver that avoided at least a portion of my ship leaving the play area.

I did however overlap his ship with my placement (that was partially off the map).  We decided that the overlap rules meant my ship didn't actually fly off the map and get 'destroyed'.  I backed out to the temporary-0 speed (not moving)--required since I started so close to his ship--and we each took the face-down damage cards.  And then next round I revealed the Maneuver command, which modified the ship's movement enough for it to avoid flying off the map.

Correctly played?  If so (or not), what combination of the rules make this clear?

Related question: we also ruled that my ship was able to use its defense tokens against his ship's subsequent attack, since my ship's speed was only reduced to zero temporarily, during my ship's maneuver.  Was that correct as well?

Thanks,

I'd say you played correct. The RRG says:

If a ship executes a maneuver and its final position would overlap another ship, it cannot finish its maneuver normally.

It then goes on to describe how to temporary reduce speed and such.

The key is "would overlapp" and "cannot finish its maneuver". So the ship is never actualy placed in the overlapping position and so in your case it was never ouside the play area.

Allso correct on the defence tookens. Temporari reduction of speed is noly for the maneuver and the speed dial is not changed, so imediatley after the maneuver your speed is back at the original value.

Easily enough: he was playing the VSD, and flying at a bit of an angle to mine (so that he wasn't really in any danger of flying off the map).  The bases are huge; I clipped his front corner with my rear corner, by a rather significant margin.

Thanks, Smuggler.
