Named Capital Ships Wave 2

Recommended Posts

I am surprised this was not posted yet.

As best as I can ascertain the named capital ships are as follows.

Imperial Faction  (The New Order)

Imperial Star Destroyers

Devastator

Relentless

(Both are Imperial I, the Devastator being the Iconic ship we know from the opening scene of A New Hope is an obvious choice.)

The Empire gets Darth Vader and a yet undisclosed Captain to command The Fleet.

Since the Imperial Raider is a new ship not existing in previous Star Wars lore (game or otherwise), I can not guess at the name given the pictures we have so far.

The Rebellion (Traitorous Scum)

MC80 Class Mon Cal Cruiser

Home One

Independence

MC30c Class Frigate

Admonition

The Rebels (scum) get Admiral Ackbar, General (Theater Commander) Vanden Willard (best guess looking at the art and picture), Lando Calrissian, General Carlist Rieekan.

Interesting enough, both Rebel Generals are from Alderaan, very poetic, as their fleets, like their home world, will soon share the same fates.

Where are you getting Vanden Willard? The card to the right of Admiral Ackbar? I thought Williard was the general in A New Hope that welcomes the gang to Yavin or possibly the general that stands behind Dodonna at the award ceremony. The bald one, with white hair and sideburns... Looks like an elderly Yankee Gen. Ambros Burnside.

Either way, the card seems to start with a W. Is it possible it could be someone else? Considering the high number of ANH personalities that are showing up in these early waves, it may be Willard, but still.

Wait Alderaan kicked your teeth in?

I almost smiled at that Beatty, let it not be said a Loyal servant of The Emperor is not without a sense of humor, no sir.

Now Beatty, if you would be kind enough to join this squad of Stormtroopers, there's a good lad.

Stormtroopers, escort Beatty to the firing squad wall.  Set your blasters to stun.  Then pummel him to death with said blasters.

We've been over this Beatty. Alderaan shot first.

The card next to Ackbar is definitely Walex Blissex.

http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Walex_Blissex

I was trying to guess at that, the art looks more like Willard, but the name on the card does look like it could be Walex Blissex.

Willard of course if from the movies and has the gravitas of being canon.  Walex Blissex on the other had is a much later character concept creation, and has his origins with West End Games and the chief designer of Victory Class Star Destroyer.  He is more of an engineer though and not a fleet commander but that would make him a great fit for this game.

As both a Star Wars movie fan, and former contributor and editor for West End Games, I would be happy to see either of these characters in this game.

Sorry guys, I forget my place.  :(

I forgot these Generals didn't survive the Galactic Civil War. Good thing too because had they all survived they might have gone on to form some new Defense Council or something. The Emperor must have been glad when he brought them to justice. Always a prudent that Emperor.   -_-

I still have all my WEG Star Wars RPG books. Sometimes I think about going back to them, though I do enjoy FFG's Star Wars RPG venture.

I think the ones guessing Avenger for the third ISD have it right. There is definitely a third title upgrade for the ISD, and it looks like the name starts with an "A." And Avenger is one of the better-known ISDs.

I think the other ones will be

ISD Avenger

Pretty sure this is right.  It looks like an A in the title.  Avenger and Captain Needa would make sense for that ship.   Captain Needa was one of the best the Empire had.  Hopefully Vader pulled him aside before the choking, and convinved him to just fake it, to set the example.

If it's Avenger then the unspoiled Captain upgrade is Needa, if it's Accuser then it's pre-promotion Piett.

Yeah. Hoping for Accuser and Piett, myself. Guess we'll see which they go for.

This would make for a great mockumentary interview.

Interviewer: "I understand you served out the rest of your career in the Unknown Regions, why?"

Needa: "Lord Vader made it quite clear that it was that or something less symbolic."

In the Legends timeline there is a chance that the Empire might not have existed without Needa. In the Revenge of the Sith novel he was in command of a Coruscant Home fleet task force that was engaging Invisible Hand and he was also the one who contacted Coruscant and warned them not to have the surface defenses blowwhat was left of Invisible Hand out of the sky as it comes down plus asked them to arrange support from the Coruscant fire department craft to try and keep it from burning up as it came in. If he hadn't done that Palpatine and Anakin/Vader along with Obiwan probably would have been fired by anti-space craft turbolasers, roasted by reentery or both.

I thought Blissex appeared as a background character in one of the Home One briefing scenes. If so wouldn't that make him as canon as Vanden Willard who only appeared in one or two short scenes in A New Hope?

I personally hope its Blissex. Having played many ship designers in Star Wars and other RPG settings I have a soft spot for the few that get named in settings. Though mine tend to be the more active type as in first design  ship then take command of it or a fleet including it and pound any enemies who get in the way into dust.

As much as I enjoy the FFG RPG I'm slightly annoyed that they retroconned the Victory into being produced by KDY rather then Rendili. I wish they would explain why they changed its backstory.

Blissex was an extra in  the briefing scene in RotJ, so you are remembering that correctly.

I was trying to figure out how anyone thought that the picture shown in the FFG article could possibly be Vanden Willard.  But I've been playing a good amount of Rebellion lately, and it turns out they used the wrong picture for him in that game.  I'm still positive that it's Blissex (the first picture in his Wookieepedia article is a dead ringer for the picture on the card, and the first two letters on the card are clearly "Wa" and not "Va"), but at least now I can see that the resemblance is closer than I first thought.

That was a much LATER recton, and a very shoehorned recton at that, the film character used does not look like the art for the original West End Game Blissex, the actor Decipher pegged as their Blissex is younger, has a full head of hair and no beard, as opposed to Blissex who should be in his 80's at the time of Return of the Jedi and is bearded and bald.

Willard is named in the novels in 1976 and seen in the movie in 1977.  Blissex was a creation of West End Games in 1989, and his art is depicted as such.   Decipher much later used used this actor as a stand in for Blissex in their card game for the Endor Expansion in 1998/1999 some 10 years after the original character concept.

That being said I LOVE that Fantasy Flight continues to other game sources for their own material because it further builds upon gamer canon, and I think Blissex would be an ideal character/card for Star Wars Armada.

former contributor and editor for West End Games

During my youth in the 90s, WEG and Timony Zahn transformed a mild fascination for Star Wars into to a life-long obsession. I still have my copy of the Imperial Sourcebook on my bookshelf.

My hat is off to you.
