Thinking about getting into it..

Recommended Posts

I've tried the DnD game and I got bored quickly, and I've played the Anima Card Game and wanting to get into Anima: Tactics, but Anima RPG sounds pretty cool and I'm wondering, what's so special about this one because I've tried DnD and it doesn't do it for me, so what does Anima RPG have that could keep me entralled? Please respond ASAP

(Mind you I haven't played DnD since 2ndE)  DnD just seems like every character that can be made has.  Waiting for another (yawn) monster manual or setting to come out.  It has it's place, my players even want to start a campaign 'cause its "simpler" than Anima.  Yet, they come back for more, and want to double our sessions.  Endless combinations of "classes", grow any way you want your character, great combat system (like Halo, realistic enough to enjoy, but not bogged down with complications), you can create your own creatures and own special attacks!

Really I think you and your players will enjoy the customizations you can do with the system.  If you like lotsa sided dice, Anima's not for you.  If you want a fresh take on a RPG, Anima might just (really) be a choice.

You may need to give more detail as to what you didn't like about D&D and what you are looking for in an RPG to get any meaningful replies. As a matter of interest, what edition of D&D did you try?

Iv also played DND 3.5 and 4.0.  3.5 has some nice charecter options when you get some of the suppliment books, and 4.0 is nice because its quick and easy to get into, however ANIMA offers something new.  ANIMA gives you the ability to create tons of possible charecter AND creature combinations with a lot of detail.  If you have the time to put into ANIMA to flesh things out its well worth it, between martial arts, KI powers, Magic, Summoning and Psyonics, its one of the coolest systems iv seen.

Rulewise, Anima is not perfect but still better than many other RPG's in my opinion.

For the universe and possibilities, it's almost perfect.

If you like Final Fantasy/Japanese videogames or Anime/Manga, go buy this NOW.  (mind that you're not "forced" to use an Anime style but I find this very inspiring.

If you like political intrigues, secret societies and compelling storyline, go buy this NOW

If you like kick in the door/low story style of play, I suggest a quicker game to play with.

ANIMA has a long "set-up" time, however it seems that once everything is set up its fairly quick.  I just want to get that GM screen so that i have the combat table and damage table, other wise I could see combat becoming tedious.  Also because of the fact that damage and hits take into acount armor and allow for couter attacks, this gives the GM much more freedom in describing combat.  DND you could score a critical hit and roll a 1 for damage, whoot my crit is 2 dmg!!  ANIMA just makes sense and allows for more contitunity when describing events.  (a critical in anima is going to be spectacular no matter how many times it happens some one just got screwed)

I had a DnD player who was opposed to playing Anima, until I asked him if he hated it when he rolled a critical (in DnD) with his 8th level warrior against a 1st lvl Wizard (or whatever), then rolled 1 or 2 for damage.  Anima you roll a crit and somethings prob. getting lopped off.

On a good note, he now want to play every weekend, and requested to play twice this weekend! Hah!

Also, can't wait for GM Screen, but have made photocopies of combat chart (sorry FFG, I didn't see a "copy for personal use only" but I think I've seen something in these posts regarding it anyways.)

lol yeah.  DNDs is good, but there are to many things that are just to simple.  you really dont start to think how silly something like variable weapon damage is until you see animas combat table.

I too was intrigued by this game as I do play the minis game. However only when people want to (GW product tends to override any other with my friends). These same friends complained and complained how horriable this game was but it looked so rich to me from just glancing. Maybe the last GM that ran it was bad, hard to say since I wasn't present for the last campaign. Since then I think my current GM (the very same friend who hated Anima) ruined DH for me >.>;  Besides I want to use my gorgeous Anima models for something other than tactics ;)

thats possible.  you need a good GM to run an anima game effectivly.  It takes a lot of prep work, however there is a nice story and world already created so that helps cut down time invenstments.

For my, Anima is the perfect RPG. You can customize everything as a player or as GM, the ambientations is brilliant and the rules are more or less the most realistics I see ever.

But, like always, there is a problem in this game. You need very involved players, and a GM who know every detail of the game. Its quite complex, and if the GM doesn't know the rules at the maximum level, the game is so poor and bored, and also quite imposible to understand. Depends as well if you like realistics rules and complex games, or you prefer the classic game of door, monster and treasure.

And finally, like other users said, you need a lot of time to inmerse in the books. If you do, it will be probably your favourite game. If not, will be the worst.

Well thanks you two, with that being said now that I found a game store that carries both products again I am probably oging to pick it up and read it cover to cover. If anything I knew many of hte artists on Deviant ARt before the game came out and I love their illustrations and hte story from the mini's game although peice mealed from so many things in the past, flows together nicely.

you need at least a full day to really get the most out of the rules.  I took about a day and a half of just about nothing other than reading it cover to cover more or less.  I would read diffrent chapters that intrested me until i finally went back and read stuff that i missed before.  it took me FOREVER to find the stupid status effects becsause theres a very sexy chick on fire in the middle of hte PAGE!!! YARG EYE CANDY DISTRACTS RULES lawl.

I know what you mean.

Though DnD is always fun if you have the right DM. You see I've been stuck with D&D most of my rpg gaming life; and I found that some DMs make the game suck hard! though when my friends made me Dm they soon fond it fun and quickly regreted it. I'm a kindda be careful what you wish for. Please if the Anima Game works out invite me in a group; I miss Anima.

my friends and i play 3.0 because its easier to minipulate the rules.

this is why, imho, they made 4th edition little more than a mini battle game. no offence sir  ^_^

Anima is very diverse and yes it will take a LOT of time to get used to as any system will, but the overall strength of Anima is it's diversity and storyline components.

If you are serious about trying out the Anima System, great. My recommendation would be to run your players through the Pre-made Mini campaign "Shadows within dreams" in the GM toolkit. It demonstrates a good variety of play and shows how the system likes to run. it can also be a great starter for players and gives you time for feedback while you make something.

Well back to your original question I would take Anima over DnD 4.0 any day.  4.0 just seems too much like a video game to me.  There are so many rules that every time I want to do something I find myself either flipping through a book or saying screw it there's too many rules conflicts.  There's no room for creativity.

Anima on the other hand lets you customize pretty much everything.  Classes don't really restrict you to playing a certain way, they just encourage you to specialize in certain abilities.  When you summon a creature, you get to build it yourself.  When you use a crazy special attack, you get to design it from scratch.

Essentially, the difference is that 4.0 gives you tons of source material and tells you to find the stuff that works best for you.  Anima gives you one book full of rules on how to create everything from characters to creatures to special abilities on your own.
