IR-3F-Class Light Frigate

Recommended Posts

Curious to know why the subject ship does not have a Navicomputer or Hyperdrive, but yet is labeled as a Starship/Captial Ship. Would have thought that any type of frigate would have a Hyperdrive equipped. Which leads me to another question, can/how does one install a Hyperdrive into a ship that does not have one already installed?

Depends on what the ship is meant to do.  Looking at the very brief description, it's an archaic patrol craft.

If it's primary purpose is to patrol a single planetary system without the need to venture outside of said system, than having a hyperdrive (and thus a navicomputer) isn't necessary.  Getting the ship to the assigned system probably required externally mounted hyperdrives of a similar concept (though probably not design) to the hyperdrive rings used by the Jedi during the Clone Wars, and quite possibly those are limited-use items that are detached/discarded once the ship has shipped to its assigned system, as there's no need for it to leave the system once it's there.

By it's Wookieepedia it's a system defense craft. It's not meant to fly from system to system. While such a craft is rare in the Star Wars setting (when compared to others) that is why it has no hyperdrive. Saved on space for weapons?

Hmm, interesting.

Interesting that such a ship still exists, would have thought that maybe there would be a brief mention (a line or two) on the ship ever got around from system to system. Hyperdrive rings or freighted.

Appreciate the info and the explanations.

Thanks.

Well, the text in FaD does not that it's an archaic craft, so there's probably not that many left in service.

As for the rest of it... not really a big factor in the Beta, since the primary focus of that was to stress-test the new mechanics as much as possible.  The EotE and AoR Betas didn't give a lot of fluff text on vehicles either, since again the purpose was to stress-test the mechanics, something especially true for EotE since it was the "proof of concept" for the entire system.

This ship is something that was "inherited" from West End Games' Star Wars setting. It's a system patrol craft meant to be a defence against pirates and other attackers. The reason it doesn't have a hyperdrive is that the Empire put a cap on how many hyperdrive-equipped vessels local militaries, corporate security forces and so on were allowed to have. The reasoning being that a ship without hyperdrive would not pose a threat to Imperial interest, nor would it become an issue if it was taken over by pirates or rebels and then used against the Empire.

Hyperdrives are also an easy way to define things - kind of like how bedrooms are legally defined by the existence of a closet, not by the presence or absence of a bed.
