My kingdom for a AT-AT!!

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone! I noticed there has been much discussion about having AT-AT's on IA. Well I'm not going to star another thread on this subject. I just want to see what people think of this idea. Now if there's a thread about this let me know and I'll go read it and not post anymore about this. Only for this thread imagine that there's no way there's going to be a at-at on IA ever but...

FFG comes up with this: Star Wars Surface Attack (aka Star Wars Battlelore) I mean they did IA on the Descent model would it be so difficult to do a Star Wars Battlelore. Enter the At-At's, the snowspeeders, speederbikes, at-st, troop tokens squads, turbolaser turrets, rebel turrets, rebel base, shield generator, imperial base tiles, orbital bombardment cards... I can go all afternoon. The point is it would be a whole different game but we would have At-at's. Let's discuss!

Back in the day used to play a game called Horrorclix, which was a skirmish game themed around monsters from films, literature, and folklore. They once came out with a massive Cthulhu mini that couldn't be used in standard games but it did come with its own map and scenario. I can see FFG possibly making an AT-AT model someday and include a poster sized map to play the scenario on. It would be easy to just make it a side mission for a campaign, or even make an entire expansion for it which would include a whole campaign involving it.

WoTC did it, so FFG can do it too. we just need bigger maps and more points, lets call it the future "skirmish epic level play".

But FFG is too busy right now selling the overcosted Armada. so maybe next year?

Personally would love an ATAT but the maps are too small so it would be a case of this.

AT-AT All Terrain Armored Transport

20 cost

Accuracy +6 - (s) Blast 3 - (s) Pierce 3

Restricted - This deployment card does not activate, and does not gain movement points, at the end of each round choose two targets within line of sight and perform an attack

Awkward - can not see targets within 2 spaces of any corner

20 Health - Defence B B - Attack Dice Pool R B G Y

I love BattleLore and I love RuneWars.  However if a Star Wars game was produced resembling Rune Wars but with Dice combat and no heroes with other new mechanics I'd buy it in an instant.  Something between Rune Wars and Twilight Imperium.  However, I don't think Star Wars really has the factions to thematically make a 4 player war game.

Surely it would also only be able to shoot forwards?  Also, I think either your health or defense needs increasing.

Come on guys, bigger boards?  Bigger rooms, more like!

This might actually work. :)  Similar to the Galactus idea for Heroclix where he had his own special rules and mechanics and didn't function on his own.

  • I like the Accuracy but maybe only three built-in.  They're big lasers that can travel far, but because they're big lasers they're also slow and shooting a small moving target is not their strong suit.
  • I think the Blast 3 should be free thought, as the lasers are enormous.
  • Four dice and pierce 3 is probably redundant, maybe stun or bleed?
  • Also, maybe "at the end of each round choose up to two targets within line of sight and perform up to two attacks."  This gives the AT-AT the ability to shoot twice and target two seperate targets or to fire two shots at one target.  Without the option to focus fire, the AT-AT will ALWAYS lose to Chewie, Vader, RGC, or anything else that can soak the first shot while running in full speed.

Small problem, though...  It has a HORRIBLE crippling weakness. and makes it *very* easy pickings for half a game's VP.  Not being able to attack adjacent AND being immobile makes it a sitting duck.

You could give it an ability like:

Incredibly Massive - This figure has the "Massive" ability.  After a move or reposition, if any figures were forced to move, roll the red combat die and each of those figures may choose to roll a single White defense die.  Apply <dmg> to each of those figures for each <dmg> rolled to each character that did not roll a "X".  Any character damaged this way is stunned.  This allows for some defense to limit the amount of attacks on it as well as not making it quite the sitting duck.  It allows it to emulate the fact that AT-AT's are incredibly slow - though not immobile - and allows for a way to show the impact of those enormous stomping feet to ground troops.

It would also have to be non-sentient.  It can control, but not interact.

Having said that, you would need to probably increase the deployment cost of that "AT-AT" to something like 24 or 26.  I'd make sure the cost was inhibitive of creating an AT-ST/ Vader duo.  Pretty sure that'd be unstoppable.

It'd take some time to brainstorm and really hammer out balance, but it could be a really fun idea for something like a tournament prize promo.  Beat the AT-AT, WIN the AT-AT or something along those lines.

Problem is that the AT-AT didn't work in star wars minis... it was a total bust... cool model, but even with the larger maps and a base with squares which other models could move on, it still didn't work... and that model was undersized scale-wise.

The only way is in some epic format with huge maps but then the game would need reworking, the accuracy mechanic would need to change or new "epic" dice would need to be released. Then theres the problem of movement points on existing models being insufficient. Then what do you do? Release transport vehicles?

This is alot of work for one single vehicle, that whhile iconic, had very very little screen time in the movies.

Leave them out!

Or there's that? :)

Does anyone know the rough scale of an AT-AT relative to the maps we already play on?  Could there be an AT-AT map full of indoor tiles where the Rebels' mission is to locate several key spots to place charges to blow the AT-AT up from inside?

Here is an AT-AT next to an IA scout walker... while the scale is close, the AT-AT would actually be bigger than that at the proper scale. Ya, they're freakin huge and totally unrealistic in this kind of game.

CAM02864.jpg

I love them too... I plan to use this as a nice scenic touch to a 3d hoth map I plan to do eventually... but I have a couple other maps to do first considering the twin suns expansion, my Jabba's palace and Rancor pit maps need to come first Lol.

But you nailed it.... the way we get something like this in game is as a map itself. Same thing for the Falcon... it would be a map of the falcon's interior... of course the falcon map already exists ;)

AT-ATSCALE.jpg

I'm not 100% sure about the accuracy of this picture but at a -rough guess- your looking at about 10 Imperial Assault map spaces long base and 5 wide not counting the head, maybe a little longer or perhaps a little shorter. Well much bigger then any of our play tiles unless FFG turned around and did -huge- open spaces of like 9 1x1 foot lock together tiles like the planned and scrapped star wars x-wing map tiles, maybe they could do a roll out mat with a 1 inch grid on it? Probably not going to happen Imperial Assaults rules would buckle under it.

Perhaps we'll see a vehicle scale game where the At-at can live happy as intended but after you do snow speeders, cloud car's, jet bikes and the At-at there really isn't much left unless you go into clone wars era stuff.

That pic is fairly accurate, but in IA terms, it would be closer to 20 spaces long... even in your pic they make an AT-ST 2 (which it really is in the game, so at the least, the big dog would be 15.... too big.

I was thinking about it in more basic ways the at-st is four squares long and the at-at is twenty long at the feet so half of twenty is ten. One thing to keep in mind the at-st in the picture is standing a lot taller then the one in imperial assault that's depicted as being more stooped down on the position of the legs.

Wow! Thanks for all the replies to my post. We can all agree that we want the AT-AT for IA but the odds that we are not getting one are very high. It is more likely for ARMADA to get a SSD on Wave 2 than getting an AT-AT. I know its sad but dont despair!!

There's always "Star Wars Battlelore"? Right! Lets all think outside the box for a moment and say YES ! I can see it. I can see five stormtroopers on a Battlelore poligon base attacking my rebel troops A-la-dropzone-commander!! I can see a 2 red snow speeder base on the right scale to that blue colored AT-AT thats  just inching its way across the board. BAM!! I use my harpoon card and down it goes! What a dream huh!?

Thats ok!  I guy can dream!!

I plan to make a Hoth map out of tiles like this one and have my AT-AT right in the middle of it.

Hoth%20Tile%204%20FLAT.jpg

I just haven't figured it out yet. Maybe the Rebels take "x" amount of damage at the end of the round, or all Rebs within a certain amount of squares...

Maybe the four feet will each be an objective, setting a charge or whatever... Not sure yet how to deal with the AT-AT appropriately without it ever moving or being a player controlled piece. I want it to automatically hav an in game effect that is impactful but not broken.

And it sucked hard in WotC's SWM. The thing was useless.

The AT-ST already has trouble navigating the map. There's no AT-AT coming.

Nonsense, it's on it's way - the ISD from X-Wing has it in her hold, and the Executor from Armada is escorting them.

To be fair, Armada's not to scale, they could realistically put an SSD in it if they so desired, the same way video games that are to scale have since forever: the Executor is so superlatively, idiotically big that you just have to make it huge and it looks right. Besides, look at the Corellian Corvettes next to the VSDs. It can't look more out of proportion than that. The SSD would only have to be two or three times the size of an ISD to work.

X-Wing and IA, however, like their scale. A few concessions to playability were made with the CR90 and GR75 but as a general rule X-Wing's to scale and IA hasn't broken scale yet (the IA AT-STs are apparently right and the WotC ones are wrong).
