The turbine produces the ions required to create thrust. Normally it's turned by electric motors powered by the solar wings, but when flying in the atmosphere the angled blades allow it to receive an assist from the air compressed against the front of you the fighter. This allows ot to function at higher rpms while in atmospheric flight. Which is good because you'll need more force to move an object in an atmosphere than in space (air resistance). Imagine putting pinwheels on the side of your car to to get a little boost to your alternator. Naturally this isn't an efficient process thanks to thermodynamics and TIEs still lose substantial mobility in the atmosphere.

This was fantastic, really hit on not just the "Robotech" aesthetic but also a healthy dose of "Heavy Metal."  I would love a regular show like this every week, just the adventures of a TIE squadron kicking ass.

There's a good reason they didn't use William's amazing score: It gets a third party match that most of the time leads to the audio being muted. I've seen a shorter version of this that has Williams' score.

I can't like anything more for the day, but I'll like this and the OP tomorrow.  Loved this vid.  Girl should have been the interceptor pilot, but whatever, she handled that bomber like a BEAST.
