Best build for Keyan Farlander in the new meta...

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, looking for some feedback.  I just purchased the Rebel Aces set and am looking for the best way to kit out Mr. Farlander so that he is both survivable and still able to make the most of his pilot ability.  Here are a few options that fit into the list I am constructing:

1) Farlander with Loan Wolf - Offensively free focus and a soft target lock when performing a red maneuver.  Gets a reroll on defense as well to improve survivability.

2) Farlander with Advanced Sensors - Ability to double focus for both offense and defense or even target lock and offensive focus with a red maneuver.

3) Farlander with Push the limits - Allows him to stress himself without taking a red maneuver, then remove the stress during his attack.  Unfortunately the large amount of red on the B-wing dial means PTL will be disabled fairly frequently.

Thoughts?

A guy in my meta loves Farlander with advanced sensor and stay on target.  He can use both to either get out of arc and use the stress on the offensive or more often take a target lock, adjust its course and then fire with both.

as above, and add B/e mod with an Intelligence Agent crew

High agility and high mobility are going to make a resurgence with Wave 6, thanks to auto-thrusters finally doing something about the idiocy of turrets, and while Farlander will dance around Aggressors and RGPs he's going to need int agents to get around the PS 8-9s of the world (Especially when Vader hits the scene).

Now, as a B-wing Farlander will never be survivable for his cost. His survivability is tied to his mobility, speficially sensors plus SOT to basically become the rebel phantom only arguably better. How? Well, lets take two scenarios:

Soontir Fel is cruising in for a range 1 shot after you move

IG-88 is within range 1 of where your dial is set to maneuver to.

Instead of taking a face-full of four dice (which could well end up eating half your half), you SoT (with the help of intelligence agent fore-knowledge and advanced sensor barrel-roll, if necessary) and just slam the bugger. Suddenly, he can't even shoot you  Now, this obviously works best when you have a target to dump the stress onto so you're still going to have to be solid on your squadron's positioning, but that's the gist of it. Farlander is a god of navigating hairballs because he gives zero **** about bumping and bumping, it turns out, is the best way of keeping him safe.

Farlander is a bit of a rough bet in the evolving Wave 6 meta because high agility ships have a natural advantage at range 3 (where they get 4+ green dice and you get...2) and my personal night terrors (Aggressors) are going to be loaded with range 3-bonus denying cannons. Once he closes the distance they're in his arena, but getting there can be rough.

My personal favorite Farlander list is

Farlander (SoT, Sensors, B/e, Intelligence Agent) [36]

Blue Squadron (Fire control system) [24]

Blue Squadron (Fire control system) [24]

Prototype Pilot (Refit) [15]

[Total: 99]

This is probably the most fun you'll have with int agents short of Sigma Phantoms. Every ship in this list becomes a massive pain in the ass with fore-knowledge of the enemy's position.

While I wish there were enough points to go around for more control, FCS Blues are surprisingly scary buggers that hit with incredible accuracy and can punch through high agility. If Aggressors become too common, though, swap them out for Flechette cannons (Stress = no red manuevers = probably won't be shooting you next turn because of bump-city)

I have been running this list with great success.

Bandit

Bandit

Wedge w/ Predator and R3-A2 (the droid is my personal preference, but you can always drop this for something else)

Keyan w/ Heavy Laser Cannon, Stay On Target, and Advanced Sensors

Giving Keyan the ability to arc dodge any lower PS ship is extremely important for his survival.  I have been successful in dropping a small base ship every turn with Wedge and Keyan, and using the Z's to block or mop up any stragglers.  Always fly them in formation, unless you are facing a swarm.

Keyan is expensive at 41 points, but I usually find Wedge and the Z's going down first.  Advanced Sensors/Barrel Roll and Stay On Target allows you to pivot Keyan around one location on the board.

Lone wolf is rather worthless on Farlander. He'll want to be relatively close to allies who can possible draw some attention off him. Re-rolling one die isn't going to help your defense much at all.

Not sure what you mean by double focus... You can focus with Advanced sensors, then do a red maneuver to get stress which he can use offensively like a focus. But he doesn't get 2 focus tokens. You can't action twice with Advanced Sensors, you action before you move then skip the normal perform action step.

Farlander is pretty good with PTL, but I find it can be limiting. Like you said it limits how much of the dial you can use. You can PTL and advanced sensors, but you better not do a green or you will clear the stress. PTL + Advanced Sensors + Engine upgrade is quite fun to run. Nearly turns him into Soontir Fel in a B-wing.

However, having run Farlander a lot, Advanced Sensors + SoT is the best option. You can pretty much guarantee that he'll end each maneuver with a stress. Just make sure you are pointing in a direction of an enemy though. He'll eat up anyone that's a lower PS than him.

I meant that you could use Adv. Sensors to focus, do a red manuever and have both a focus token for defense and spend the stress to trigger his pilot ability to focus on offense.

And then you'll run into a list with no important threats at PS 7 or lower, and your opponent will take initiative.

I've been trying Farlander with a few different things, and PtL + B-Wing/E + Lando has been the most consistent so far. It gives you something to do for an action during the opening turns of the game and can dramatically increase Farlander's survivability.

I've had some success with this combo:

Wes w/VI+R3-A2

Keyan w/opportunist

Add another ace or a couple of filler ships according to taste. I usually use either Ten Numb w/mangler cannon, or a fully loaded Jake Farrell w/title+prockets+PTL+Outmaneuver+autothrusters

I added naked Biggs and B/e mod with Jan to the combo Jace posted, works very well.

Got 5th in a small local turnament with this and I took down Corran, Whisper and Echo with Wes and Keyan in the first exchange of fire.

Got wiped yesterday with a 3x naked B-Wing + Farlander with advanced sensors + veteran instincts list.

Enemy had an A-Wing, K-Wing with the idiot-proof turret  ;P and a shield regenerating poe dameron.

Are 4x B-Wings lists still viable? Can Farlander do a 2 K-Turn instead of another 2 maneuver with stay on target? Seems so?

My brother runs farlander with Nien Numb, let's him do faster maneuvers and if he's against a stress build he can shed it real easy, course the other advantage of nin is it says may so can not have straights as green and keep stress

4 B-Wings are always strong. Panic Attack will always be a monstrous list, even in its original 4 B state without the Y-Wing.

I agree with Keyan Farlander being at his best in a build that is as light on points as possible. SoT + Advanced Sensor seems good to me. If there is space for 2 points, /E2 and IA are a great addition. B-Wings don't lend themselves well to point stacking.

we rise again!

anyway, KK gives you a focus which is offensively redundant

defensively, 1 agility + focus = zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

for B-wings, it's c3po or bust (possibly r2-d2 if you enjoy gambling) or sensor Jammer. Either is far more effective for the same point cost

I love Keyan and I like flying him w/ VI + AdVS + C3P0.  Obviously with a list tilted to gain initiative (when possible).

Worst comes to worst, you can use  AdVS to ensure a collision protecting you from return fire at times, otherwise, you can use him as an extremely proficient ace hunter w/ his reds (probably my 3 favorite moves in the game, 1turn, 2k, 3bank).

I also like to hedge my bet w/ a Ps 10 Poe...generally keeps opposing Aces from being too aggressive against Keyan if they know they can have a 4 dice Poe shot coming in at their rear (in the case of losing the int bid).

TLTs aren't hugely prevalent in my local meta, though I can imagine them presenting a huge challenge to a list such as this.  Palpmobiles + Aces are far more common.

There is also room for a stressbot, with the aforementioned Keyan and Poe.  3 big-time threats there.  I have some fun with Tarn + R7 in this spot too, but the threat of a stressbot cannot be overstated when facing aces.

I've probably edited this post 5 times adding things to it, Keyan is my boy and I just feel the need to share the love, lol!
