Farlander, an excuse to use Adv Proton?

In a vacuum it doesn't look that terrible, but you can't in good conscience put both HLC and APT on him, and if you're spending 6 points on APT, you should just spend another and switch it to an HLC instead.  4 Focus/TL dice at all ranges is way better than 5 guaranteed hits at short range, once.

**** is horribly over priced and situational, plus you could just get any other pilot to set up a similar combo for similarly disappointing costs

 

For example, a 37 point Nera with Deadeye, B/e, and recon officer will give you a 360 degree guaranteed five hits, and **** still isn't worth it

Pretty much any B-wing can do what Farlander can do with APTs. Grab a TL at range 3, then move into range 1 and focus. Then pray you can get them off. I don't see how Farlander is a better APT platform.

 

 

Guri is the best APT pilot now. She gets a free focus while in range 1. All you have to do is TL.

 

Still she is 36 points with APTs. I'd rather outfit her with a Sensor upgrade and an EPT.

So you had to have gotten 5 hits, with one being a Crit with your APTs, then he would of had to have rolled 0 evades out of 3 dice. Then that crit had to be a direct hit or a minor explosion, which he rolled for an additional damage.

 

I'm not good with the maths, but the odds of that happening have to be extremely, astronomically low.

put the problem with APT is not that five guaranteed hits shouldn't be one-shooting defenders as much as it is spending 6 ******* points on a one shot, range one weapon. For one measly point more, you could give Farlander a HLC.

 

While I wouldn't advocate making farlander more expensive without improving his mobility and flexibility, I'd take HLC 12 times out of 10 because it's a consistent increase in damage and not a complete crapshoot.

True... But you still have to TL the prior turn, then move in with a red maneuver to get the stress (very clunky). You can't TL + Stress-Focus the same turn unless you have Advanced Sensors or PTL. Then you are at 38 points... With just naked Farlander and APTs, it still requires that you use 2 turns to setup the shot.

 

APTs are one of those cards that is just not worth the points in a 100 point match. They have their place in +150 point matches.

While I would normally agree, I've had quite a bit of success with the 5 point (on A wings) 5 dice one time use Proton Rockets on A wings.  True, there's a bit of a difference between the two - the APTs require a TL+F, where PR "don't" require the TL, and the APT guarantees 5 <booms> while the PR only have about a 50% of 5.  

 

But the big difference between the two is that an APT only adds 1 die to the X, B, or E wing, where as the PR adds two dice to the A.  The second big difference is actually getting into R1, where an A wing doesn't have a problem doing that, but a clunky Y wing (which actually benefits the most) can't really accomplish that without quite a bit of help.

 

But I would be willing to give them another go after my recent success with PRockets.

Actually, the one time I've seen someone use Advanced Proton Torpedoes, it  was with Keyan Farlander, but with a Fire Control System and Opportunist.

 

The Target Lock came free, and the stress token came from adding a sixth (!) dice to the torpedo attack. I believe the most appropriate phrase to describe the consequences is "spontaneous existence failure".

 

The nice thing is that FCS/Opportunist are not in any way bad cards for Keyan anyway (unlike taking deadeye, which is specifically for ordnance) - they just happen to enable advanced torpedoes perfectly by generating the target lock and stress token for free.

Prockets on A-wings are really nice. They make them a tad expensive, but also they do kind of scare your opponent. I've seen people stop shooting my big turreted ship because they were afraid of a Procket to the face.

 

 

I'd say just running Keyan with FCS + Opportunist is fine on its own. The APTs seem kind of overkill to me.
