FAQ Question about "Take Initiative"

Recommended Posts

Listening to IACommand's latest podcast episode got me thinking of the timing of "Take Initiative". They asked what would happen if a player who already has initiative played "Take Initiative"?

Here's some reference text:

Take Initiative: Use at the start of a round to claim the initiative token. Then exhaust 1 of your Deployment cards.

So the FAQ states:

Q: In a skirmish, if my opponent plays “Take Initiative,” can I play my own copy of “Take Initiative” to counteract it?

A: No. Your timing window to play cards “at the start of the round” would have passed (see “Conflicts in a Skirmish” in the Rules Reference Guide).

But looking at the Conflicts in a skirmish section in the rules reference, it states:

During a skirmish, mission rules are resolved first, followed

by effects from the player with initiative, then effects from his

opponent.

So if the player who already has initiative plays "Take Initiative" and claims the initiative token he already had, and the opponent plays "Take Initiative" to claim the initiative token, he would indeed take control of it since effects from player with initiative resolves first, followed by the effects of his opponent, according to the "Conflicts in a skirmish" section.

But this scenario is a direct contradiction to the FAQ. Am I correct in assuming that the FAQ should be revised to:

Q: In a skirmish, if my opponent plays “Take Initiative” and claims the initiative token from me, can I play my own copy of “Take Initiative” to counteract it?

A: No. Your timing window to play cards “at the start of the round” would have passed (see “Conflicts in a Skirmish” in the Rules Reference Guide).

Then both scenarios given would be correct?

I think we were wrong at what we said on the air if you look at what "Claim" Says in the rules. You bring the token to your play area when you take it. How to you bring something to your play area  that you  already have? So I don't think  you can play take init if you have init. Maybe I am wrong but thats how I would  rule it and it makes sense with how the FAQ rules Take init.
