zjguy721 1 Posted February 24, 2015 Anyone have a map or expanded information on the Wheel? I'm starting a new group, myself included as GM, in EotE, and using Beyond the Rim as a jumping in point. I'm plannin on using the Wheel as our base, and was wondering if there is anything out there.
awayputurwpn 7,720 Posted February 24, 2015 The Wheel is a massive space station, too big to map out. There is no map of the Wheel in existence that I know of. I'm sure you could spend years exploring the thing. Basically, the Wheel can have whatever you want or need out of a space station for your campaign. 4 RLogue177, FangGrip, verdantsf and 1 other reacted to this

DanteRotterdam 3,941 Posted February 24, 2015 Don't map it. Have it be what you want/need it to be. That's the beauty of such locations.... 3 bradknowles, verdantsf and awayputurwpn reacted to this
OriginalDomingo 762 Posted February 24, 2015 You could map out things like the standard hangar, docking facility, cantina, etc. if you use these types of gaming aids. I wouldn't map out the whole thing either. If you're looking for some inspiration, I recommend enjoying some gritty sci-fi action with Sean Connery in Outland. 1 bradknowles reacted to this
player546410 1,130 Posted February 24, 2015 (edited) Well, using a major Los Vegas Casino as a density marker, and assuming that everyone's on the ring, that gives us a ring with approximately 15,000 meter circumference, or about 4,400 meters across. Or just slightly more than the entirety of the Las Vegas Strip, put in a circle. Mr. Flibble 103 Posted February 25, 2015 Well, using a major Los Vegas Casino as a density marker, and assuming that everyone's on the ring, that gives us a ring with approximately 15,000 meter circumference, or about 4,400 meters across. Or just slightly more than the entirety of the Las Vegas Strip, put in a circle. Most of the illustrations out there would suggest that The Wheel is much, much more than 4.4 kilometers across. I'd be putting in a Death Star neighborhood of bigness. If it has a resident population of 300K, it would make me think there's a very uneven density distribution, and very possibly that large chunks of the station are uninhabited. 1 bradknowles reacted to this
Bishop Odo 7 Posted February 25, 2015 I'd also hunt for some artwork, for your own personal use, and combine that with area locations, and maybe a non detailed map.

DurosSpacer 296 Posted February 25, 2015 Our group finished up a stay at The Wheel last night. Here are some notes on The Wheel set up (below), mostly gleaned from web sources. As ours went, we did a job and got a freighter, but the freighter had cargo yet to deliver. Deliver the cargo, keep the ship. Got into middle of squabble between two Wheel crime sector bosses...one young, reckless, and ambitious (Mr. Boyd)...controlled the 'streets'....the other, old, gray-haired, established (Mr. Hoyt), controlled the 'docks' in the criminal underworld there...he stayed in the Spire and let his lackey toughguy (Mr. Tully) handle the business. Young guy owned the cargo but the old guy was putting the squeeze on him for half the cut before he'd let the ship leave. Greyshade came in to calm things down before a streetwar broke out...and our Enforcer-Hired Gun rolled 7 successes on a Leadership check to calm things down (and made a great impression). Hoyt had a younger blue Twi'lek (Silkie Blue) arm-candy whom the Enforcer wooed. Boyd had a similarly hot-headed red Twi'lek (Feera) who was nasty with a knife and ran the business with him. We sided against the hot-tempered Boyd, took his place, then got hassled by Hoyt over the same cargo and did him in, too. No Slicer in the group so we never got into it with Master-Com. THE WHEEL “…a monument to pleasure, risk, and greed.” POLITICS: · Imperial station just outside its “immunity sphere”…to allow people to enjoy themselves in peace. · Run by (Senator) Simon Greyshade (gray back hair, mustache, blue-gray eyes) o (Knowledge, Lore check (2 Diff))… one of the most corrupt Galactic Senators who took full advantage of all of the privileges of being a Senator · Applies a strong anti-alien bias…. “guilty until proven innocent” · Only “financially-worthy” customers allowed entry (into the main sector) STATS: · Central spire is exclusive. The Executive Tower. · Movement by airflow cars · 48 starfighters; 2 transport shuttles; 10 light cruisers(for traffic control) · Over 100 docks (one section an Imperial Dock section) · Tractor Beam: (thwarted escape) · Gladiatorial Arena deep in the middle of the central spire · Security and main systems run by Master-Com o Master-Com projects itself into droid bodies around the station to interact with patrons (stocky protocol droids) · Wheel Security Force: heavily-armed, well-trained…escort jackpot winners, o Stun grenades: o Slicer member…seal section, infuse stun gas o Use blast doors to seal off sections

This is probably nitt-picking, but I use Knowledge (Education) for politics and information on governments. I thought Knowledge (Lore) was for "lost cultures and ancient legends." I know it's all up to interpretation and the different knowledge skills can overlap like a Venn diagram on certain topics. 1 DurosSpacer reacted to this

DigitalChicanery 311 Posted February 27, 2015 This game doesn't need maps Maps are a fantastic story-telling aid and have a long and rich history in RPGs in general. Most everything in an RPG doesn't "need" a map, but having handouts and guides is certainly a solid and well-established strategy. Lord of the Rings doesn't need maps, but yet there they are. I suspect a great many people thing "map" = tactical, which it certainly doesn't. 1 awayputurwpn reacted to this

I rarely use maps in combat. Maps are like any other visual aid. If your players get excited when they see them, and if it helps them see what's going on more clearly, then it's good for the game 2 awayputurwpn and Farsox reacted to this

zjguy721 1 Posted March 1, 2015 My thought was to divide the sections of the outer rings into similar sections. So, assuming 360 degreees in a circle, divide it into 120 sections. Each section would be the same structurally, with a loading bay, housing, eating, etc. Obviously there would be different tenants, etc, but at least it would be an easy way to at least get a general layout for the players to move around in. So it could be Landing Bay 97, or the administrator for section 66 is corrupt, etc. Seeing as the consensus is that the wheel is quite large, it could even be 360 sections. 1 bradknowles reacted to this
Bishop Odo 7 Posted March 2, 2015 I would try to find the TSR Alternity adventure "Lighthouse" and/or the B5 source book, both of these had great ideas for a mapping huge stations and big places with general maps, and then more specific areas, for adventuring. I retconned The Wheel to be the size of Argos III in my adventure, since my guys are not huge enough SW buffs to have heard of it before. I like the more manageable size of Argos III. LeDuc725 1 Posted March 6, 2015 (edited) My playgroup tends to look at a map as a crutch IMO, and this is partly my failt for not encouraging them to look for anyhting beyond what they see on those maps. In the future, I think i'll avoid using them and draw thigns a bit vague if they ever need a map of a particular building or an area.
