X-Wing 4th Faction

@3 Sure nothing has taken the Vong out of canon yet, technically from what IVE seen they shouldnt ever be decanonised, at worst most the fine detailes of their invasion is changed.  Would be cool and ironic if a rogue World Destroyer eats up most their fleet.

Episode VII directly overwrites them.

It doesnt overwrite anything.  Besides the writters have already said that if anythings changed it will only be the fine details.

Post Endor got wiped. The original Solo children no longer exist, Vong are gone. We don't know what's coming back. I imagine Thrawn will probably be back in some way, shape or form, but NJO, Legacy and Fate got paved over.

It's pretty much the entire reason for the canon change. In Canon, post Endor is a mist right now.

The only solid info we have is that NJO and beyond are gone. We still have to see what comes out in the movie before we can make any more determinations on what is still in and what is out.

Which is why I'm hoping for Luke's daughter.

Next time someone gets a designer interview can they kill this discussion off like they did three dice phantom errata and Card Packs?

Good thing this is saved. I believe you are wrong TIE.

Comparing this idea to card packs?

We shall see.

Ok, so if FFG did a 4th faction, what could, or would, it be?  I can think of 3 possiblities:

1.  Stuff from the Prequel Trilogies.

2.  Stuff from The Old Republic era

3.  For something completely unique, the Yuuzhan Vong.

It took 3 years to get the third faction. Let's just be happy with this well made game and wait another 3 years to see if they pull anything from the movies.

Personally, I'd really like to see models & pilots for the civilian/planetary government idea -- but I think it should be done as a cinematic play expansion, not be legal in tourneys, and include no upgrade cards except those specific to that "faction". I'm in big favor of more ships & terrainy-type goodness to add in to scenarios & casual play: models for the senator's shuttle, cargo containers, various freighters, small space stations, etc.

Or have them as mission packs like the senators shuttle, cargo containers etc. So long as upgrades are kept fairly generic, all should be good.

Fun pack ideas: BFF-1 and 4 cargo containers. Nubian cruiser with 2 n-1s...

I confess that I truly dig the idea of an expansion that is 'civilian', and not tournament legal (I wasn't kidding that much in the other thread).

  • Bring me any awesome new 'Star Wars' ship model from the movies or key (KEY!) ships from the video games...
  • A well-playtested and balanced scenario (and I mean scenario as extremely well balanced as X-Wing tournament play)...
  • New upgrades - crew, weapons, equipment, etc - even if only usable in 'epic' (IE., not tournament) play...

Yeah, I'd spend money on that.  Ticking all those boxes?  No question at all!

I have a hard time coming up with any ship ideas that wouldn't fit into one of the three current factions in SOME way.   They COULD print a "Younger" Han Solo for the Scum and Villainy set, they could print some of the Scum guys as either rebels or Imperials.... so you can certainly have some duplicates with slightly different abilities, especially since this wall has officially been broken down with Boba and Kath.

I'd like to see more re-use of existing characters to be honest.  I haven't read too many books, but our E-Wing pilots apparently are more well known for other roles, so lets see them in those roles.  Let's see Mara Jade in a z-95, lets see Soontir Fel in a new ship or something! (That woudl be insane!), lets see Nien Numb as a pilot, Lets see Chewie flying the Tyderium!!!!!

Also there are still a fair amount of Original Trilogy stuff that hasn't shown up yet in game:

Obi Wan

Yoda

Cloud Cars (Yeah yeah yeah, lets just say that any battles that take place with a cloud car happen to be in a nebula or in a high atmosphere.

Adrimal Piett!!!!

Tarkin!!!!!!

Motti!

Tagge!!!!!  (Who apparently didn't die on the first Death Star!)

There are a few other notable admirals but I don't know if we need all of them, since they typically served on Star Destroyers and such.... but they are certainly viable for crew.

So honestly - There is a TON of stuff we still haven't seen from the original films, that we really don't need to be stretching the game ultra thin with wishing for a 4th faction yet.

No it didn't get wiped.  You haven't been keeping up with what the writers have been saying about EU.  At worst only the fine details are going to be changed.  Nothing has been shown that the Vong are flat out gone, not that they would based on what they writers have said.  Nothing has been shown that the Solo children are gone, granted one may no longer be a Solo but that just goes along with what the writers have said about the EU, only the fine details may be non-canon.  The writer that created Thrawn said he would repair anything that could possible retcon his work, so all his stuff is canon.  Going by the what the writers have said AND what was shown in the Tarkin novel Dark Empire is still good.

Also not every YV and YT craft had turrets, and not everyone plays straight forward shoot to kill missions ether, S&S faction could really shine in story based missions.  Missions that should be in tournaments to make the matchs more tactical and objective based other than just kill everyone or as many as you can before time runs out.

I have been keeping up with what authors are saying about the EU, and yeah, post-Endor is basically gone. In December (or earlier, apparently) we're going to have an entirely new timeline for the post-Endor world.

Timothy Zahn (also known as "the writer that created Thrawn") is my favorite EU author by a fairly large margin; although a lot of things would need to change substantially, many of his characters and possibly even some of the events in the Thrawn trilogy could survive in the new timeline. One of the reasons that's true, though, is that compared to the Vong invasion and the New Jedi Order they're set relatively close to Endor.

But if you think a massive invasion by a group of improbably capable, extragalactic, sadist Luddites counts as a "fine detail" that can reasonably coexist with the new movies, then... honestly I don't know how to have a conversation with you, if that's the case.

Zahn going all fanfic writer on his pet characters? No way. I respect the work he has done on the Thrawn Trilogy, but dear god the man has gone down hill in his writing.

Chewie returning in Episode VII pretty much cements anything NJO and beyond as gone.

Luckily, as far as I know Black Knight Leader isn't characterizing Zahn's stance very accurately. For instance:

However, I'm guessing that EU stories that aren't referenced (or contradicted) by the sequel movies will still be considered sort-of alive, in the same way that most Clone Wars-era stories (like Outbound Flight) were mostly unaffected, with the exception being all of the previous material on Boba Fett's backstory.

I really couldn't publish anything Star Wars without LFL's permission and blessing. However, once the book line is restarted (I assume it will be restarted sometime soon), I'll certainly pitch anniversary editions of the other two Thrawn Trilogy books.

I would certainly be interested in writing more Star Wars. I presume LFL wouldn't simply give me carte blanche, but would want something specific (a spin-off from Ep 7, maybe, or some backstory filler).

If they really let me do whatever I wanted, I have a couple of ideas (all right: 20-30) in mind. But all of that depends on them.

Doesn't have to be gone completely.  Could just be modified.

This could be a cool place to introduce some of the more obscure ships that a lot of folks are wanting, such as Lady Luck.  It's a yacht, right -- so give us the model with pilots cards for all 3 factions: Rebel Supporter, Imperial Bureaucrat, Crime Boss, & Lando Calrissain (with Lady Luck title).  Design well-balanced missions around each, a capture/escort/destroy thing.  Again, though, this is all cinematic play only (and maybe epic), and includes no new cards except those specific to the new ships.  While the yacht has a cannon slot, say, it won't come with any new cannons.

Give it a year we'll see a 4th faction announced.

I'd offer to bet on it, but it wouldn't nice of me to take your money like that.

That's a boat your missed FFG's beat you to it :P

The three factions have it covered.  there is nothing that will not easily fit in one of those factions.  you can expand the existing factions (to a degree)  new ships and characters can fit there.  I think I new han pilot card for his smuggler days would be good, and there are some other crossovers that would work as well.

I hope (and think) there will not be a fourth faction.

No vong, ever.  there is an idea that needs to be re-written.

I am not a fan of the prequel movies but I do like the ships, for the most part, but having CIS vulture droids battling X-wings is just flat out WRONG.  So, no.

Want a sperate prequel game - Fine, I'm ok with that.

How about a few more epic ships?

Chewie surviving changes so much of the following story of the Solos, that you are just tossing the story out anyway.
