Crew sizes of Star Wars capital ships

Recommended Posts

Rather than trying to compare how many square inches a miniature occupies and all, it might be more profitable to try and find out how much space it is calculated that a real military ship needs per crew member.

See my earlier posts about comparing Nimitz class carriers to ISD. On length alone an ISD can hold 29,000. That's not counting how many more decks there are

To put some real world perspective

HMS Victory, 1st Rater 100 Gun ship of the line, at 57m had a crew of approx 1,000

USS Missouri, Battleship at 270m, had acrew of 2,700

Nimitz Class Aircraft Carriers, at 330m, have a crew of 6,000

Raw scaling up of the Nimitz crew ratio to the LENGTH of an ISD puts the crew at 29,000.  Thats not taking into account the many more DECKS that an ISD has, so the figure of 37,000 is not out of question.

Neither is the conservitive figure of 5000 to run a Mon Cal ship, if you do not count the Air Wing and support staff.

Just to add on, converting merchant ships into warships has been happening for a while too. During World War Two, the U.S. Navy set about converting a bunch of liberty ship hulls into Escort Carriers by adding a flight deck. Of course, this had the opposite effect of what the Mon Cal did because it added more crew (flight support personnel) but if you consider that some liberty ships were used as troop transports also, the total capacity for people was lowered.

From a certain point of view.

Which is also a useful comparison, but I was talking more like "Each ship needs approximately 13 square feet (totally made up number) of space allocated to crew quarters, mess and rec areas, sanitation facilities, etc... per crew member."

Which probably also has a time factor; a crewmember needs, say, twenty sq. ft. living space, but half of that is shared by another crewmember (hotbunking, shifts on stations, etc.). If each person is active for two thirds of a day, then they basically only need 2/3 as much exclusive space.

...I don't know if I'm articulating this particularly well.
