Calculation EPT

Recommended Posts

Why can it only be used once per attack?

Because of the rule that says you can only use an effect once per trigger.

An a-wing with 2 calculations and 2 focus tokens could use them both.

Don't think that us really a cost effective combo though.

It's also impossible; A-wing Test Pilot prevents you from taking the same EPT twice.

I threw together a post talking about the Math of Calculation here.

It contrasts it to the generic Focus action and the Marksmanship actions.

TL:DR: It improves on the offensive Focus slightly more than 41% of the time, and is worse than a 1 point Marksmanship slightly less than 16% of the time.

It seems to me there are only two types of ships that could really use this: cheap ships that don't need great ept's, and ships with 2 attack dice who aren't likely to get multiple focus on an attack roll.

Define "likely". With 3 Attack, the chance of coming up with multiple [eyeball] results is just 14%. Even with 4 dice, it's still only 26%.

Where is that in the rule book?

Could you use it on the twice on the new Y-Wing title that allows a secondary attack after a primary?

I was thinking this plus accuracy corrector on Ten Numb might be interesting.

Not sure I agree with this, define "opportunity". You have 2 eyes and two focuses, you use Calculation once to change an eye to a Crit. You still have a focus and an eye left, is that second focus token not a separate opportunity?

Wasn't it claimed previously that Garven can spend two focuses on one attack (trying to find a source now)? Seems similar to that situation.

edit: Nevermind, rereading the card the text reads "When attacking" which implies a single opportunity per attack, it does not say something like "When spending a focus during an attack" which I think would allow the double spend. Leaving it up so people see the difference.

Yeah, so like I suggested earlier, Coran could use it twice.

Coran attacks, uses the EPT to change a Focus to a Crit.

Garven spends a focus token, gives it to Coran.

Coran uses his second attack ability, uses the EPT to change the Focus to a crit.

I think that's the only way. That and a ship that has both Recon Specialist (or the above Garven situation) and Gunner. Two focus tokens, two attacks.

Ooooor, would it work twice with two tokens and a cluster missile attack?

It won't work with Accuracy Corrector. The AC erases all of your [eyeball] results (because it overwrites all your results), leaving nothing for Calculation to do.

OK thanks for the correction.

Might not be bad with Proton Rockets since you don't have to spend the focus token for the attack. Maybe a cheap A-Wing with Proton Rockets, Test Pilot and Calculation?

Also this really makes Imperial Kath better. Instead of going with Marksmanship and leaving 0% chance for a Focus on Defense, you can now use Calculation and Recon Specialist to really up the ante for your crits or at least save one Focus for Defense if you get a great initial roll. Definitely not auto-include, but good enough if you have an extra point or two.
