Custom EotE dice sets

Recommended Posts

The one thing I have not seen anyone post is casting their own dice. Make a mold of the dice and then cast what you need. Unless you are selling them, I doubt that FFG will bother with you. Now, it will limit your options on material, but I think it is a viable idea. Now it may not be cheap to start, but I believe it could be cheaper than 3D printing. Also it should also be less sanding and polishing.

I have a friend that does resin casting and he has some clear resins which might look good.  Should work fine for the d6 and d8 but I'm not sure how to make a good 2-sided mold for the d12.  Might give it a try though.

Man, I just want them to sell singles! I lost a yellow die somewhere along the line and I've been unable to rest easy knowing that my sets are out of balance!

After every game, I look like Rainman lining up all of my dice sets so to make sure I'm not missing any.  I panic when I can't find one and I scour the table looking for it :)  It's a disease, I tell you!!

I'm right there with you. Only I sometimes will do it in the middle of a game. "Okay. I'm missing a challenge die. Who has an extra yellow?"

You wait until after the game? Every time my dice move! "OK, who has an extra blue? Yes, you can borrow a red but GIVE IT BACK AFTER THE ROLL."

If it’s a disease, then it is one that is found amongst more than half the guys at any table where I have sat to play RPGs.

I’m a little OCD about making sure I have all my dice, too. But I don’t take them out of the bag unless I’m using them and then I put them right back in. So, there should be no chance of losing them, and they don’t act as a distraction during the game for me — unlike some others at my table. ;)

don't worry, desslok. I'll laugh in your face to help prepare you for it. it'll be like roleplaying, only meaner. I am a good friend.

Send an email 6o customer service. They may replace it. They are b ery good from whathe I here.

Good point! Dropped them a note - the worse that happens is they laugh in my face.

This gonna be followed with a "Who you gonna please with that?"

Oh no - I just thought of something horrible! What if my Yellow went to live in the bag of another player? And FFG sends me a replacement - and THEN the yellow turns up! I'll have too many! NOOOO!

Although I am getting better - back in my D6 days, you DID NOT TOUCH another persons dice. To do so would be to irrevocably screw up the karma and Feng Shui of the dice for the owner. From that moment on, they will do nothing but roll crap - you might as well throw them away.

You don't throw them away. you load into a slingshot and shoot them repeatedly

I have a friend who did this for a birthday part. Sorry it took a moment to reply. I had to look for the link. It should be a good place to start.

That looks like fun, but not quite workable for usable dice.  I talked with my resin-crafting friend and he gave me a list of reasons why it was a bad idea and wouldn't do what I was looking for though he was willing to try if I wanted.  Basically the only way to do something that precise is a two-part mold, and for dice that means a seam that wouldn't look good.  Fitting the two halves together is also a bit less precise, the silicone molds do stretch and flex a bit and the resin shrinks as it cools.

3D printing is actually the cheapest option for custom dice, unless I can find a dice company willing to do it.  You could also have them milled with a 6-axis CNC machine, but that is apparently very expensive.  :)

Oh well, it's not like the FFG dice are bad.  Just wanted some more cool factor.

I haven't tried the single for playing dice, but I played a bit with the chocolate ones and for the most part they worked, but like you said it comes to the edge being odd. That could be easily fixed with sanding and polishing.  I have used a similar technique for other Costuming Pieces. so to get the precision and detailing you want a huge part will be the finishing process. regardless if you went one or Multi-Piece Molds. I would not suggest you mold and use with out sanding and polishing. Which you would have to do if you made your own 3D Printed Dice. If you have someone who is capable I would suggest trying it out. I personally would look at trying to do a two part mold, maybe a 3 or 4 part mold. (This thread has gotten me interested in trying it and if i do i would post results for you guys). So really it comes down to that finish process before use.

If you really wanted something cool that uses the FFG Symbols you are limited in options.

You can also try the Paper Printed Dice Process, but I am sure that would eliminate clear dice. (I only suggest it as an option, tried it not very fond of it)

I think I'll let my players know that it's a permanent loss of 2 strain threshold for every die they lose.

I have an old DnD Game Masters Token Set.

It has 6 equal sized holes and a larger one. The lid of the box has a nice felt liner that makes it a rather good place to roll dice.

Way back when I sanded off the DnD artwork and have been using it for my Flames of War dice, tokens and tape measure. The box lid there is fantastic as you can roll the dice in there and not knock around miniatures or get dice that end up on terrain.

Too bad they stopped making them.

It’s a box.  The design is not complex.  It would be easy to make new ones, according to the same design.

I even ran into a guy at my FLGS that custom-makes boxes for carrying cards and miniatures for the various games that people play there, carefully sized to the exact dimensions necessary for the third-party interior bits to fit into.

I’ve been thinking about talking to him regarding some custom jewelry boxes that my wife has wanted made for many years….

That said, they do cost money, and they’re not available as a standard off-the-shelf type of item.  For that, you might have to go to the Container Store, which is also conveniently located here in Austin, TX.  ;)

What I really wanna ask here is:

How possible would it be for some dice making company to make legit SW FFG dice? Like, I'd love to have some METAL dice, for instance. It'd be tricky because they don't just have unique symbols, but you also can't make the whole set the same color (I mean, you can but it'd make reading them a little harder).

Or even, I don't know, translucent ones, frosted effects, speckled, etc etc.

I get that some or maybe all the symbols are probably copyrighted, but does FFG have anything in place regarding this type of situation? Like are they completely against other companies making their dice? Do they have plans to make more options in the future? Or do they think it's cool that more companies wanna make the dice and have some kind of licensing deal to offer?

Anyone have any info on this?
I've already sent an email to one custom company to see what they have to say, and when I get a reply I'll post here.

By the way hello all, since this is my first post here!

You are welcome to make your own custom set of Star Wars dice for personal use. But FFG contracts out their dice to a specific company. If you sell your custom dice, FFG would have the right to seek legal action.
