Target/weapon declaration?

Recommended Posts

Sorry if this has already been answered, but I didn't see it anywhere and we are new to Xwing in our area. Is there any rule governing a target being declared? I didn't see any, but I didn't want to assume.

Example:
I have an HLC on a Bwing. I declare i'm firing the HLC, check the range and find i'm too close. Can I then just fire the primary weapon instead or am I penalized for 'attempting' the HLC shot?

Thanks!

You're actually meant to check range to your possible targets first, then decide which target you wish to shoot, so you should know ahead of time whether or not the HLC will work.

If you don't, though, then you can "go back" and select a different target that the HLC can shoot, or use your primary to shoot your original target. You're almost never penalised for trying to do something that turns out to be impossible.

The steps are covered in the "performing an attack" section of the rules. Step 1 is declare a target, so you choose a ship and measure range. Then you roll dice based on the weapon you are using. So, yes, you will know ahead of time if you can use the HLC or not.

Ok. Thanks! That's how we've been playing - just wanted to make sure it was happening correctly.

Also, you could download the FAQ if you haven't already. It may answer some future questions, and you'll quite often see references to it here.
