Which Big Box Expansion?

Recommended Posts

Ok, we are now hooked on Descent 2e and, with my oldest daughters 18th next week, I got Lair of the Wyrm for her (read: us).

To add to the festivities, 2 weeks later is my birthday and I have decided to treat myself to a big box expansion.  The question is SoN or LoR?

Any input or suggestions?

I am also hooked i havnt even finished 1 playthrough yet but have already got most expansions.

I went for SoN over labarynth firs because the new thematic board design, the enemies and heroes interested me more. And the whole new campaign im currently storing info for 3 campaign groups so for my sake I wanted the next one to be different.

But LoR is next on my list

That depends on what you're after. Nerekhall has more as its own campaign experience, but Labyrinth has unique things to add to your base game play. What do I mean by that?

Both expansions offer 4 heroes, 4 classes, some shop cards, and some monsters, and a campaign to play.

Labyrinth of Ruin offers an entirely new OL deck, Basic II, which can be chosen as an alternative to the basic deck, though Nerekhall offers the Shadowmancer class and some new universal cards as well.

Nerekhall has the corrupt citizen cards, a new travel deck, and the influence mechanic, but all of those things are only designed for use with the Nerekhall campaign.

Both expansions are great. As mentioned Labyrinth of Ruin is something that adds directly to what you have in the Core box, plus it has a great boss creature with Queen Ariad (the lieutenant model was a must buy for me). Nerekhall is a city with an intruiging story and the tiles have a different theme. I dont think there is much between them, look at the monster and heroes in each set and maybe decide which floats your interest the most. If i really had to choose only one it would be Labyrinth of Ruin as i love the spider boss and all the monsters here. Also Pathfinder Durik with his wolf is a bit special.

I have some small details on each on my website if it helps > http://www.crusadersgolf.co.uk/html/descent.html

unfortunate i can't reach it. I have had a lot more people tell me that SoN is better, and it sounds like it has more. Ill take your advice on the matter, although i like the idea of familiars(have only played OL so far). is the spider that pig of a deal in LoR?

My website is being moved to a new provider.

The spider is not that big of a deal other than it is a great giant boss model (available separately) to use within the game and i love spider enemies.

However since my post back in 2015 Nerekhall has its own campaign story to play in Road to Legend - so if you plan to play these app co-op games then it would now gain an edge for value.

Personally i still prefer the monsters from Labyrinth of Ruin and the hero models are definately better made, but overall Nerekhall now has the better campaigns to play i would say. If you want a set that adds more to the core set and still retains the same theme and tile style then Ruin is best.

@ATM2100 Also Queen Ariad can have neary 70 health and BGG defense in one finale. She has 28 health normally.

I think she is the only lieutenant who is dialed back stat-wise in her agent card. Even the 2nd toughest lieutenant (Mirklace, though I think he, Valyndra, and Ardus are all on par) is the same between his agent and lieutenant cards, stat-wise.

Also, Logan notwithstanding, I think Shadows' heroes are better. Orkell is often seen as weak (brown die, lowest health bracket for a warrior) but the 5 speed + stamina is really something compared to other warriors in the roster, who frequently have 3s or 4s instead.

I'd say Reindel is the weakest of the SoN heroes.
