New to X-wing where to start?

Recommended Posts

So recently for an early X-mas gift, my Girlfriend bought me the X-Wing Mini core Starter set, aswell as 1 X-Wing blister, and I recieved one B Wing Blister from a friend. So my question is, where do I build from there?

I dont plan on really looking into tournaments or any real heavy play at the moment, mainly just causal with my friends and girlfriend for the time being. Im sure it comes down to personal prefrence. But im open for suggestions on what to maybe start to build up my fleet with for a good basis.

Thank you in advance for any ideas or help you can offer!

Well, first off, I'll just start by saying you found a keeper :P

As for the question, definitely pick up some imperial ships too. Sounds like you've got plenty on the rebel side. And interceptor will fit nice, and maybe a bomber if you want some variety that you're familiar with from the movies. Imperial Aces would be great, if you're cool with just squints. The defender is a neat add on too, and is a bit easier to fly than the Phantom.

Is your preference to stay with one faction? There are now two and the third one will be available early next year.

Will you be playing with friends who have their own fleets or will you be providing for everyone? The latter is most likely if you'll also be playing at home with your girlfriend.

Will you be allowing or be allowed to proxy? That is, make up your own copies of cards usually only available by buying certain expansion packs? For instance, the B-Wing really likes the Advanced Sensors upgrade card, but they are only available in E-Wing and Lambda shuttle packs.

These questions are important in deciding what to get first.

Do not pay too much for ships on sites like e-bay, everything will be reprinted anyway so they will become more available, you just might have to wait a bit.

This site has a list of all packs and what they contain in the way of pilots and upgrades:

And Welcome!

3 years ago at Christmas, I got a copy of the X-Wing core set from my GF (of three months). Today is our 2 year wedding anniversary. Coincidence? Probably. But when I got her a pro-level fight stick, she thought I was worth keeping around. Anyway.

If it's mainly you and her playing, I'd get a second core set in the near future. You have a decent Rebel group, but Ties are cheap and die easy. Having 4 of them will make things more fun.

You've got a standalone X-Wing expansion, so that's taken care of. I'd also recommend a standalone Tie Fighter. There are some good pilots in there that are nowhere else. If you do all that, you'd have: 3 X-Wings, 1 B-Wing, and 5 Ties. That's a fun night of flying!

If you're still enjoying the game, I'd ask myself 1 basic question: what is my favorite (non-capital) ship in all of Star Wars? That's the next ship you buy.

Also Tie Interceptors. Those things are awesome. Unfair Banana has the strait goods there.

1 caveat: as of Friday, we've gotten very excited about the Tie Advanced. That's because it is currently brokenly bad, and FF has announced a fix that will be in a separate expansion. We're pretty sure it's a good fix, but you're new, and the fix will be expensive. So stay away from the advanced for the next 6mo-1 year.

So happy flying, and welcome to the madness. If you're near Santa Monica, we should set up some flying time.

Oh! I almost forgot! Bookmark http://www.themetalbikini.com and visit when you have downtime. The main writer there is a real mensch who takes X-Wing apart and puts it back together again. He's doing it to help _him_ figure it out, and in the process, he can help _us_ figure stuff out. He's another one of us old fogies with adult responsibilities, so posting is sporadic. Always worth reading, though.

The traditional first advice is: get a second core set, and it's a good idea- both for the three ships and for the extra dice. That'll give you an XXXB list that is the standard 100pts for the Rebels; then you probably want a few more Imperials. With the second coreset you'll have 4 TIEs; you'll want the single TIE fighter expansion as well for one of the best pilots in the game (Howlrunner).

Interceptors are great for the Imperials at that point- probably get Imperial Aces. The single Interceptor expansion has better pilots but it doesn't have the Push the Limit card, which is the best Interceptor upgrade (it comes x2 in Imperial Aces, and x1 with the A-wing). Alternatively you could get a TIE defender, TIE phantom, VT49 Decimator- any of those will give you a 100pt Imperial list.

After that, you'll probably have more of an idea what else you want anyway.

1. She is amazing and I love her. Hearing her say "Bring it honey, time to kick some rebel scum *** " Just before sent advanced with a tie fighter is enough to send any nerd thrut he cosmos at lightspeed.

2. Yes I have noticed the influx of prices and such after looking for a Y-Wing, Slave I or Falcon. And I assumed I could just wait till early next year so Im glad to know that.

3. A few of my friends said they would pick up a Core set and have a few friends that have small fleets to play. But mainly I want to build a small fleet of Imp and Rebel ships, maybe a lil scum to pair off for flair.

4. Proxy, yes, I think that is one of the best variants for gaming in general to start. Aswell as custom escort ships or space debris for fun. Nothing to big to start, but fun flair for friendly games with the people I know.

5. I was thinking of purchasing the Imperial Aces pack, a Z-95 and a Phantom Tie to round things out for balance with what I currently have. and Wait for the Falcon, Slave I and my fav (the Y wing) to come back in common stock.

The TIE Phantom is a fickle beast to play, be warned. :P.

Take a look at the upcoming Most Wanted pack as well. If you want a Y-Wing, a Z-95 and a Slave 1 you might as well take that pack in addition to those expansions.

it is the introduction set for the third faction containing a Y-Wing and 2 Z-95's in variant paint but the pack also contains upgrades you can use as a Rebel Player and it also contains cards to transfer the Slave 1 to the new faction with upgraded pilots.

I saw the Most Wanted pack, and was very intrested in it. Could the Y wing and  Z-95's be used as rebel ships if the proper rebel Pilots are used?

Sure, variant paintschemes are unimportant, Rebel Aces provide them for the A-Wing and B-Wing for instance.

So a pack of Most Wanted and an additional Y-Wing and Z-95 (and some proxying) would net you two Rebel Y-Wings and 3 Rebel Z-95's. I don't believe the pack comes with duplicates of the generic pilots for the Rebel side, but I'm not sure.

I'd suggest start slowly and get an expansion or two at a time. Buy a Rebel ship, then buy an Imperial next time, and get used to each ship and how they work. They can all be quite different. If you decide to flood yourself in all the ships that are available, you'll confuse yourself real quick.

Make sure you get the Millennium Falcon and Slave 1. There's some good fun to be had with those ships, and the upgrade cards they come with are really handy on some of the other ships.

Enjoy

Do take care though, the Most Wanted pack, I just realized, does not come with an Ion Cannon Turret.

If you want two of those for your Y-Wing you'd either have to pick up another Rebel Y-Wing or pick up a Rebel HWK-290.

Luck would have it though that the HWK-290 also has a conversion kit to the new faction in the Most Wanted pack.

I planed on getting a Y-Wing first and for most, but due to avalability at the moment, I have to wait for now. Thats why I debated the Z-95 or Hawk for another Rebel ship.  They both were low cost, and seemed to be simple ships to flow well with a Good X-Wing.Granted... X-Wings nartually play well with others in any Rebel fleet, (movie, book, or table top) ;P

I would recommend that you get either a Rebel Aces pack or a Millennium Falcon pack.  Getting the Rebel Aces allows you to play XXBB builds (2 X-Wings and 2 B-Wings) while getting the Falcon allows you to play Han Shoots First (Han + 2 X-Wings).  If you are looking for more fun, casual play, then the Rebel Aces pack would be great as it has many interesting cards and has two different ships for added variety.  If you are looking to do some tournaments too, then the Falcon pack would be your best bet.

Just get any empire ship you want, and maybe 2.  Then you can play bigger games with reb v empire.  When you get bored you can expand slowly.  There is a lot to take in at the moment.  So learn the stuff you buy before you get more.  Use the list building sites to see what comes with each pack and soon enough you will be excited to try a new ship out(or upgrade).

Most of all.....make sure you get all your friends addicted along with you so you have people to play with(and share the cost)

Have fun man.  It really is a great game, and you can't go wrong with whatever you get.  But I do second the comment to hold off on the tie advanced for a while.

First, welcome to the addiction!

Second, get some hardware on that woman's finger.

Third, think twice about the quoted statement. I came in the same way, and have to say that it's been a blast, going to my FLGS to play. I know at least one guy who brings his wife. Last time I played down there, she kicked my butt with a mixed headhunter/X-Wing/B-wing list. Then I notched my first win against a TIE swarm, of all things. Depending on the store, if you get in with some cool players who, generally, fly casual, it will make your enjoyment of the game that much better, and will help you understand the game more quickly.

I would get another starter and 2 Tie expansions for sure. That would get you to 100 pts for each side. It would also be the cheapest way to get there I believe.

Then Imperial Aces and Interceptor expansion if you can find it for the imperials.

For the Rebels Y-wing first and definitely a Rebel Aces. I would get an A-wing expansion as soon as they are back in stock.

This is so **** true

And you are a rebel player...get yourself a YT-2400 an E-Wing and if you can score a Firespray get that as well because of upgrade cards eventually you going to want all the things...but for now get what you want to use.
