Why does the HWK-290 have such low damage?

Recommended Posts

Moldy Crow was armed with 8 fixed forward lasers and a turret. That's like two X-Wings and an A-Wing put together....Only 1 attack die?

I suppose mechanically they might have wanted to cheapen the cost of the ship as much as they could considering it's intended as a support ship. Still....

Because regardless of the 'lore' its role in the game is a support ship and its to discouage you using it as a 'wierd fighter' and instead use it to buff other ships.

it might have eight laser cannons but lets say they are not very good ones... great at taking out unarmoured shiping but poor against shields and imperial armoured ships?

Narrative wise it makes little sense but a support ship that has tons of firepower would end up in you wasting one or the other ability each game OR it would make it a must have ship OR way too exepnsive to have anything other than an xwing escorting it in 100 points.

Its a cheap force multiplyer when used well.

And the 'blaster cannon' give it the 360 firepower equiv to an xwing.

its from weaponry is marginally worse than a Y wing.

You cant fire them all at once... but if you could its only one red die less than that X and Y combo

But then if its one guy with no crew you've got to co-oridnate that firepower... imagine trying to fly stright and on target to line up the 8 cannons (do they all fire at the same point or is one rear firing?) AND trying to lock your turret on to a ship.

Its why the blaster cannon requires you to focus i imagine.  it assumes its one guy trying to handle a lot of systems.

You see i thought you'd dredged up mouldy crows armanent from a book or wookiepedia article.    I didnt realise we were counting 'spikes' onthe model.

Using the latter system a tie int has up to ten 'cannons' but in 'lore' the wingtips are the cannons, the chin mounts are empty (but can be fitted but it drains power) and the mid wing 'guns' are actually targetting range finder lasers etc.

Nothing in the game is quite as deadly as it looks on a model

Like the xwings lasers are three times the length of the quads on the falcon but do less damage

I assume that a chin cannon is always present. Those sensors are angled outward for a reason. They're never not sensors and you might notice they're directly attached to the engines.

Also the nose of the ship is also all sensors and systems. Really this would have made a great ECM / ECW ship.

I imagine the underslung gun, when not a turret, is simply the most basic in weapons one can be armed with.

Basically because, as people have pointed out, it has none of that. It has one chin turret, and even THAT isn't standard on a HWK which came unarmed as a stock model.

Sure would be a nasty surprise if it DID have 8 guns though....

ONTOS

crazy weapon.

I was always amazed when 'call of duty -  black op' made up all this wierd historically innacurate stuff for the vietnam missions (like vietcong with G3s and underbarrel flamethrowers) when 'nam had some of the 'wierdest' real world weapons ever.

I think the hawk was kinda shoe horned into being the rebel's counterpart to the shuttle, a shame since its supposed to be quite maneuverable but it gets stuck with a rather terrible dial. Dunno where it gets the one primary attack from. But its primary attack should be a 360 turret as its only weapon is a turret. I guess the new scum turrets and things might make it a little better. If you take a Hawk's turret away its attack should be zero :P

It's a small freighter not a gunship, I don't remember the crow ever taking on squadrons of tie fighters in dark forces.

For a long time my favourite game was Jedi knight two the light saber combat was just awesome, it's great we have the mouldy crow in any form, I hope we get the ravens claw at some point too.

Indeed its usually unarmed.

its a light transport.   Kyle Katarns is modified for being a spy with a blaster turret.

I think the model probably should have been a big bigger though but i dont want to get into the 'scale' row again.

Well both of the developers in a Covenant interview, stated it should have a 2, because even though it has no weapons, anyone going to battle with a ship would add them. But they are not going to do errata to fix it.   So for now it has a 1.   Same goes for the Phantom, they both admitted it should have a 3 attack not 4, but they won't errata to fix it, because that is not how FFG does it.

Its 1 reason why i have never liked the 'Falcon' Title and the named YT1300 cards.  A basic YT1300 is 2 Att as probably a freighter should be.  The named YT1300s are 3 Att and this makes sense if you state they are the heavily modified Falcon, hence the Falcon title is already incorporated.

Don't get me wrong I love the Falcon but I don't like to a certain degree how a freighter is better than many single seat military craft.

Agreed. I would have prefered if they had made all the YT1300s the specs of the ORS, but with a special rule that they can take up to 4 modifications or something. Throw in a few YT1300 only modifications, and you would have something that perfectly represents just how customisable a basic YT1300 is.

It's there.   I think alex says it!     From memory,  something like "Well were not going to errata the phantom to 3 attack, because we don't use errata for that"

Sad but true. At least they straight up admit they boned that one(s). At the time it was released sure it was bad, and with their design schedule 18 months out they should have known better, though at the time the schedule may have only been like 6 months and not known it was a mistake, who knows. Also the idea that maybe it was supposed to be a large ship which I think would have been perfect then.

The no errata thing is the only thing I don't get about FFG. To me it's like the one and only flaw they really have. "We know it's wrong, but for reasons X, Y, and Z, we won't fix it." When xyz are all fairly solvable things. But hey the games great anyway and if the Jedi curve has a few outliers I guess that's okay? *really want an FFG 'deal with it' meme or gif here LOL*

I don't think the HWK's laughable innate offense is a huge deal, since they've basically been priced under the assumption that you'll be rocking an Ion (21 points on rebel operative) or Blaster + Recon (23) anyway

The dial's the real culprit in how difficult it is to use :P

But that's fine, since FFG has compensate in other ways. The rebel pilots are surprisingly amazing (except Kyle, he just doesn't stick out as much next to Roark or Jan) and the Scum pilots are almost unbelievable, especially Muk who might basically single-handedly eviscerate this phantom and/or fat ship meta.
