We're Not X-Wing Miniatures Designers

Recommended Posts

I don't get it. Why are there so many threads that run on like game design workshops, as if we had any say in changing ships you didn't like or found hard to fly competitively against the current meta, or mechanics you don't like, etc? It seems a huge waste of time and energy to play pretend and "what if" games on far fetched scenarios that the real life, paid design team would rightfully never consider.

So, 1) why are these threads so prolific, and 2) why don't those who participate instead divert their energy into improving their within the bounds of what is and what they can control?

People enjoy game theory, game design, and game mechanics. This is an ideal place to discuss them.

Aside from that, as mentioned, people like to have house rules. When you're running a friendly game, there's no reason you can't stick a free FCS on a TIE Advanced, for example; you want to run your favorite ship, but it's underpowered. And I'm sure that FFG's devs do read these forums; at the very least, they can get a good idea of what we want out of the game, the new ships, and the meta.

I like to read them...most of the ideas are well intentioned and while I wouldn't use them if they weren't official many of them aren't bad...most people do have game balance in mind...

That being said I have seen a great many suggestions that weren't worth the server space do hold them...certain for bomber variations, banning of cards and the like...

Well its not 100% true what we dream up doesnt end up being used by the FFG XW game designers.

We bagged for a long time for a third faction and got it.  IM sure our ideas for the TIE Advaced X1 fix and TIE Advanced X2 (Avenger) were looked at by FFG.  Also my idea for squadron based rules somehow made there way into armada  :)

You're right, we're not designers. We're just the people who spend money on the designers' products.

Because 1000 heads are better than 10? I have seen a lot of suggestions on here that were great balanced thematic ideas. I have seen some that were awful. That's how ideas progress.

I would think if a game designer doesn't listen to ideas from the people that play every day, then they aren't very good designers.

Nothing stops people from actually using anything they want in home games.

True, but that's not how most of the threads and posts are written.

Is it as big a waste of time as moaning about other people enjoying themselves? I would also say no one makes you look at them.

It's as much my forum as it is yours and theirs.  I'm expressing what I'd like to see of it.

They did admit they read the forums.  However, the lead time on development is about 18 months, so whatever our concerns are are already probably answered and in the manufacturing-shipping pipeline by the time we start whining about them.

So what should all of our topics be about?

Squad building, theory crafting, tournament results, meta trends, product announcements, speculations, MathWing, etc.  There's so much more.

Yeah...I wouldn't be patting myself on the back saying MY idea made it into the game...you can't be sure of that it makes you look rather full of yourself...I also doubt you were the only one who came up with this idea...

I also highly doubt this forum played THE central role in the third faction...while ffg does listen you guys on this forum give yourselves way too much credit for the things that come out...

Be happy you are getting some of the stuff you want...but drop the overinflated perception of how important your opinion actually is...

Breaking news, the Earth is round!

Oh, sorry, I thought this was a thread about posting obvious things.

More seriously though...

If you've ever been in a leadership role and someone says they don't like your course of action, you get pretty annoyed if they just leave it at that and don't also at least suggest a solution.

So on one level, that's what novice game design fixes are.

Also, it's not like you can't play with house rules.

Similar examples:

We're not D&D designers, why are you making your own campaign setting?

We're not professional football coaches, why are you making your own fantasy team?

We're not car designers, why are you writing about your dream car?

We're not cats, why are you on the internet?

It's as much my forum as it is yours and theirs.  I'm expressing what I'd like to see of it.

And I like to see other forum member's ideas about fixes to things i feel don't work right.

You see what i did there?

I'm really not trying to mock you but your argument is ridiculous.

Most of these threads that you say "annoy" you have titles that clearly state what they're about.

JUTS. DON'T. CLICK. ON. THEM. Show some self control if they bother you that much. Geez.

D&D and fantasy football are designed for user input.  Dreaming about a car is one thing; to claim claim the Ferd Fteenthousand is broken and you know how to fix it is idiocy.  The last example doesn't even make sense.  Cats are funny.

No, they clearly say some ship is broken or some mechanic is broken, and that misleads new players into believing a falsehood.  Share your house rule if that's what you want to do and clearly state so in the title, but JUTS DON'T MISINFORM.

I wonder if the OP is a x-wing designer who doesn't like people complaining about his work.

Or not. In either case, he wins today's Hypocracy Award for posting a complaint about complaints. Oh the Irony!

I'm not.  (In an interview one of them said FFG has a rule against employees posting, but not reading.)  My gripe is very specific.
