Ruling: Promissory Notes And Elimination

Recommended Posts

Salutations fellow galactic dominators,

My friends and I were playing a 4 player game wherein I had given my Support of the Throne Promissory Note to someone else. Later on I was in danger of elmination and the question arose: Since none of my other Promissory Notes would hold any weight after I was gone, would Support of the Throne still count toward his total? The wording on the card seems to indicate that it would, but thematically there are strong arguments why it wouldn't. Anyone have any insight as to how this conundrum be resolved?

As a general rule, we play that once a player is eliminated, all of "his stuff" is removed from play. Unless the game rules specifically say that player-initiated effects remain despite elimination.

As for an official answer in TI3, I'm not sure. I don't believe the rules explicitly mention what happens to a player's things after he is eliminated.

However, I'm pretty sure there was a ruling concerning the Secret Objectives that require you to conquer a "neighbour's" home system and such, saying that if your neighbour is eliminated before you can claim that SO, the player next seat over becomes your new "neighbour" on that side. That would seem to support the idea that eliminated players no longer "count."

I thought I had read something to the effect that an eliminated player's stuff was removed from the game, but it was before SotT came out and so wouldn't have mentioned promissory notes by name.

That is how I would play it though, the eliminated player has ceased to exist within the game.

We don't dispute that the player would cease to exist, we just weren't sure if Support of the Throne would still hold it's weight. The card does not specifically reference the player giving the card away, but it is tied to the player through colour, so we're all just 'it is a mystery' about it.

If the Empire giving you support is extinct it stands to reason that their support is non-existant as well, thus the promissory note in question would be null and void and removed from the game.
