3. God **** is that design sexy (I'm assuming here that the emitters for the crossguard are protected in some way from just being lopped off by the guy we're trying to block)

There are several different kinds of metal in the Star Wars universe that can withstand a lightsaber.

Important Point: Normies don't know this.

A big part of Star Wars' success was making "sci-fi" (Oh, please God, let there be no crossover Trekkies who are going to take me to task over this.) accessible to the large swell of the bell curve who could never get into it.

what do you mean cross overs.. I started with Star Trek... Star Wars just added to the awesome world of Sci Fi.. and battlestar Galactica as well.. how about Logan's Run.. Forbidden Planet.. I could go on, but I'll just say this.. Sci Fi was alive and well before Lucas came along, and it thrives today even though there is a void of Star Wars movies..

I kid.

I'm a Next Gen fan, myself. But there are (or were) those Shatner-philes who would start a lecture on how Star Trek is "real" sci-fi anytime Star Wars was mentioned near them. You've gotta know the types; or are they all in retirement communities by now?

Anyway, don't get me wrong, I love (and own) both Logan's Run and Forbidden Planet, but you picked some interesting examples.

I consider Logan's Run to be part of the Dystopia trend of its time. (Soylent, Apes, etc.) Sure, it had some sci-fi elements, buuuuuut. . .

And Forbidden Planet is much like Star Wars itself in that it's just The Tempest in outer space. Again, it has sci-fi elements, buuuuuut. . .

And I'd say that neither film, or any other film, was the cultural revolution that Star Wars was. It didn't just change sci-fi and the perception of it. There are people who credit it with rescuing the US from its post 'Nam psychosis; people found something to believe in, and feel good about, again. Beyond that, it (and arguably Jaws) defined the Summer Blockbuster, CREATED action figures as they are now known, and changed movie marketing and impact in general.

Also, you can't rely 100% on the lore from novels and EU things anymore, because Disney. Defenders and such might exist, but not under the same circumstances.

Not true.  They exist until they don't exist.  In other words, all EU is in place....unless it contradicts something they put out in the future.  So, the EU is perfectly intact right now.  We shall see how it stands after Ep 7.

@Black Knight Leader: That's funny.  I like it.  I think when dealing with the Emperor, you got one thing.  When dealing with some Col. of a planetary defense force talking to a Moff, then that's another thing.  Also, once the Emperor was killed, you probably saw more budget issues and supply problems.

I approve this post ;)

I kid.

Remeber that the Empire is run by bureaucrats.  I can totally see a group of them denying the local military commander upgrades with comments like, "There is still depreciation left on those regular Tie Fighters and I can't approve this spending request for new ones for another 2.5 years."

The Republic was run by corrupt bureaucrats. The whole point of the Empire was to prevent that. They figured an absolute dictatorship by a geriatric wizard in a black dress would get more done. And let's be honest, who can blame them?

I can agree with most of what you said here, but.. you kust not have read the Logan's Run book.. the end of that was them escaping to a space ship to Mars.. if I remember right.. a good read, that I haven't read in... 20 years.. lol..

I was just following your lead with my comments, I thought someone asking to not be jumped on .. should be jumped on.. lol. I also didn't want to get too involved with the remarks and kept them simple. There are so many sci fi movies and shows from before SW that could have changed the face of the genre.. but SW seemed to just grab a bunch of us moreso than anything else.

I think most of us here are fans of multiple sci fi shows or movies.. it seems to be par for the course with us lol.

As I said before real science was used to make the colored lightbulbs in the ST orignal show.  WHAT I didnt tell you was Weird Science was used by two guys with bras on there heads to create a British super model chick that goes nuts and has all she wants at her disposal to do whatever she wants.

Robert Downey Jr was there.  The name of the girl they created was Ultron.

The US Govt still uses Warthogs even though they are obsolete.  They aren't nearly as huge as the Empire.

Themz fightin' words!

The is no finer close air to ground support fixed wing aircraft in the world.

True, but they are suseptable to SAM's pretty bad.  Everyone seems to have portable SAM's these days, too.

I like the Warthog, but it is being retired.    Sorry if I pissed you off enough to make you triple post.

The idea of the Emprie was to be run effeciently and without corruption.  So, the idea of a hyper efficient bureaucrate is an accurate one.  "We don't need to spend 25% of our budget on upgraded Interceptors when our current load are well within acceptable parameters and haven't even hit depreciation yet..."
