whafrog 9,697 Posted November 28, 2014 So,,, discuss Good, bad, interesting: Falcon good. Lightsaber bad. Stormtroopers...interesting, since now we know the Empire is still around, they didn't all run off to get massages like in Robot Chicken. 1 FuriousGreg reacted to this
FuriousGreg 1,642 Posted November 28, 2014 (edited) No lens-flares... so far. I'm not a huge fan of JJ. and although I did enjoy Star Trek (I thought ST2 sucked) I found it to be light on character development, frat-boyish and unprofessional for a quasi-military Star Fleet, and the action to be a bit frantic. Too many close up shots and not enough establishing shots, all action and not much suspense or breathing room between scenes. I really hope he spends more time on the characters but I'm not sure he will. Edit: and I agree; it's a Lightsaber not a flaming sword... Poseur 243 Posted November 28, 2014 Not all lightsabers are created equal. I was a bit skeptic to it, when the leaked concept art came, but now when I saw it, epic! Unstable lightsaber with lightsaber cross-guard, so freaking awesome. Totally approved. 2 Josep Maria and Jegergryte reacted to this
awayputurwpn 7,650 Posted November 28, 2014 Okay...stat that crossguard lightsaber! What do you think, -1 strain (to a minimum of 1) to activate Parry, +1 strain to activate Reflect? Or perhaps 1 less Advantage required to activate Improved Parry, +1 Advantage required to activate Reflect? Any ideas that don't come from Saga Edition? Donovan Morningfire 9,605 Posted November 28, 2014 I was at the FLGS picking up some Christmas presents for a couple folks when the store manager exclaimed "that's right, it comes out today!" and rushed over to his computer station, with myself and a couple other guys gathered around. I think this statement from one of the guys said it best: "That's it, I'm buying those new Star Wars RPG books and I am starting a Star Wars campaign!" There's not a lot of actual substance, but the ending shot of the Falcon soaring followed shortly thereafter by the familiar roar of TIE fighters zipping past... all I can say at this point is "Can December 2015 get here fast enough?" Okay...stat that crossguard lightsaber! What do you think, -1 strain (to a minimum of 1) to activate Parry, +1 strain to activate Reflect? Or perhaps 1 less Advantage required to activate Improved Parry, +1 Advantage required to activate Reflect? Any ideas that don't come from Saga Edition? Easy. Provides Defensive 1, with possibly a modification option for a rank of Vicious to account for the blade spikes on the end being able to worsen a critical injury. Best not to overthink it, particularly when all you've really got to work with is a few seconds of non-combat footage. 3 kaosoe, awayputurwpn and Jegergryte reacted to this
Lorne 2,021 Posted November 28, 2014 (edited) Looks like Jaina on the speeder and Jacen with the wicked saber... Edited November 28, 2014 by Lorne
Wulfherr 46 Posted November 28, 2014 I loved it. The X-Wings and the Falcon were great and the stormtroopers' new design is awesome (though I'm wondering if they're Remnant or some other faction). Now the Lightsaber gives me a vibe of something ancient (unstable, more longsword-like) rather than a modern evolution. I realise it can still be brand new (just a matter of tech mods and unique crystal), but I'm wishing for the Black Robes to be an "awakened" relic of ancient Sith tradition. DeepEyes357 91 Posted November 28, 2014 (edited) Looks like Jaina on the speeder and Jacen with the wicked saber... As much as I would love that, I think they're going to end up being different. From the rumors out there, Daisy Ridley presumably is Han and Leia's daughter, but apparently that's it, and if I remember correctly her name is different in the leaked concept art images. Adam Driver may very well be the Sith Apprentice. Doesn't mean he can't be their son and be like Jacen, but we'll have to wait and see what else comes out. It was very surreal watching the trailer. Like, I knew this was in the making, saw some of the news and concept art images and stuff...but it didn't really "hit me" until I saw the trailer. This is actually happening. I'm very excited, but cautious as well. I'm not a fan of Abrams, and if some of the rumors currently out there end up being true, well it'll be rather disappointing...but we'll see. And I'm sorry, but that new saber is terribad. Edited November 28, 2014 by DeepEyes357 1 bradknowles reacted to this
Atomisk 66 Posted November 28, 2014 I saw this, much excitement. So if Unstable crystals are canon, when are we getting an unstable crystal stat block?

DeepEyes357 91 Posted November 28, 2014 [And I'm sorry, but that new saber is terribad. How come? Mainly the idea that it's supposed to be a cross guard. But that wouldn't work in this regard. What the speculation is now is that it's an unstable saber, and those are like exhaust ports for it. You can see the saber blade looks unstable and shifting. The sound is different as well. I could live with that, considering what the prevailing theory is for who the supposed sith are. 2 Sturn and bradknowles reacted to this

amidonricky 0 Posted November 28, 2014 To me it looks like the sith has a barab ingot in his lightsaber. After all the description of the barab ingot says that it burns so brightly that the blade almost loses cohesion.
Torg Smith 121 Posted November 29, 2014 Yeah, that cross guard would get chopped off if another lightsaber slid down the main blade into the handle assembly. If the cross guard crossed through the main blade so there was only energy at the joint, it would have been better. On a bright note. I over look these things when watching the movies as I bet they would be quite boring if designed by engineers.
FuriousGreg 1,642 Posted November 29, 2014 It's likely not a cross guard but an offensive addition, like brass knuckles on a trench knife.
Poseur 243 Posted November 29, 2014 (edited) Or the metal part of the cross-guard is made of some lightsaber-resistant metal, like the electrostaffs in Ep III and work as an extra offensive ( like cross-guards). I really hope he spends more time on the characters but I'm not sure he will. I felt basically the same way about the new Star Trek movies, but I think his style is more suited to Star Wars, which has always been lighter on the plot, and heavier on the action than Star Trek's slightly more cerebral stories and slower pacing. I just hope he stays away from the zany crap (like Scotty plunging through fluid tubing, and the ubiquitous chased-by-creature-through-crumbling-terrain-with-over-the-top-falling), and refuses to accept any input from anyone that wrote for the prequels. Comes with a free rank of Parry, and has Parry either require 1 less Strain to perform (not sure how this would interact with Supreme Parry), or require 1 less Threat to activate Improved Parry. Or comes with an improved option for disarming or sundering.
UncleArkie 67 Posted November 29, 2014 I loved it, but like many others I'm not a fan of the lightsaber cross-guard thing. As a HEMA fighter who does a lot of longsword it just looks like the art guys got to run wild and as usual not knowing jack about how actual fighting works. DoctorWhat 156 Posted November 29, 2014 The lightsaber doesn't bother me. My girlfriend asked why it had the blades on the side, my first thought was, "probably for parry and defence." The only part of the trailer that made me groan is the stupid looking droid. Blokes in black cloaks, lightsabers, the Falcon, X-wings, Stormtroopers, a new Star Wars movie! I'm a happy bunny
