Core set required for skirmish?

Recommended Posts

Will it be possible to play the Skirmish game by just having a rulebook, dice and a skirmish force /army?

I like the thought of a good Star Wars competitive ground forces game, but I cannot afford the base set right now.

will we be able to go to events with just our force and dice?

For official tournaments you'll need official FFG cards for deployment and command decks, plus minis and probably tile sets.

I imagine at some point there will be squad build sites where most of the above is spoiled plus OCTGN, so you could probably play casually without spending a dime, or at least any FFG will see.

Not looking to copy the units...I was wondering of a person can get the skirmish PDF and buy the ally units and have enough to play at an event.

Well, it looks like each expansion has a bunch of command cards, so if you are buying enough expansions to field a full squad of figures, you're undoubtedly going to have 15 command cards to choose from to build your command deck.

To me, the biggest hurdle will be the boards. I think you'll pretty much be expected to bring your own boards to build a skirmish scenario. However, the likelihood of finding another person to play with who doesn't have the core set is probably pretty slim. But take X-Wing for example. Each person will place 3 asteroids at the start of each game. A core set comes with 6 asteroids. You could assume that since your opponent has a core set that you can just use 3 of their 6 asteroids. But doing so is sometimes frowned upon since people don't always like strangers touching their pieces. It may or may not be frowned upon for you to show up and just expect someone to let you use their board pieces. But I do think you could probably get along with just expansions and the dice pack it if that's what you really wanted to do.

I think if that's the route you choose, though, you'll most likely be playing Rebels. Mercenaries and Imperials get their core units from the core set.

the game costs under 70 dollars right now if you pre order it just figure out away to buy it.

Or go to your local store when it comes out pretty sure people will let you borrow pieces or play with them if its not in a tournament.

Then build relationships with the people pickup the ally/villain packs then you in time you should be able to build your own squad.

To be honest I think the best way to go is just fine a local store and guys that have the game play with them a few times. Learn and build relationships then buy your own game and Ally/Villain packs

right...but I have a limited gaming budget and there are quite a few great Star Wars products coming out in the next 2 months.

As I stated I am looking at ways to increase my budget (digging through old magic cards to sell ;)) and will see if I can budget it in. I am really interested in the skirmish side of the game.

Unfortunately, I think you truly do need a copy of the game to play the skirmish mode.  Of course, if we were playing at a local store I'd let you borrow my pieces...and so I'd like to think that other people would as well.  But regardless, there is no skirmish game without the core set...SOMEBODY has to have it.
