Question about topic titles: do you find it kind of annoying when it's so long that it's practically an entire post? What happened to brevity?

Recommended Posts

i would rather a long title then one that doesn't explain what the post is about.

Pretty much this. If I don't have some idea what a thread is going to be about I'm not going to open it. My I don't have time to sift through dozens of threads I don't care about because people are too lazy to think up accurate descriptions.

A quote of some tips that I used to see posted at one of my old workplaces.

In a background article on the leaked diplomatic cable archive, the NYT today discusses the "Ambassador's Cable Drafting Tips" by Richard E. Hoagland, the U.S. ambassador to Kazakhstan. From the article:
  • Pay attention to the first 5 words, they need to catch the reader's attention, they are the only thing diplomats see in the electronic cable queue
  • Avoid flabby writing (see this too often in diplomacy)
  • Incorporate story telling
  • But: cute writing is never acceptable, only for toddlers, not for professionals...

^ exactly, be concise and to the point.

Not "is this any good" - should be " is this swarm list good" etc

Like those people that don't put subject headings in emails, errrrgh

I couldn't find the entire guide but my favorite was the last bullet point:

Make sure it passes the "So What?" test. There is no shortage of paper or information in Washington.
