How often are you going to use your Huge Ships?

Recommended Posts

Wow. This is interesting. I'm shocked how little these great pieces have been used! Before every one in our group had one many of us would get together and play against our borrow for a game the few we had available. I love 100pt. They're quick, engaging, intense fights. But playing three a game night gets repetitive. Even the boredom factor aside, the tantalizing prospect of, "okay pilot, it's time to move you to front line duty." It's a completely different game. And as a 'commander' planning your imperial attack squadron or coordinating your escorts from the bridge of the corvette, or desperately using your onboard equipment to get your two transports in a convoy through an imperial trap. And dam do you learn more about flying in an epic match. Pretty sure we've played epic 300&400pt games a half dozen times probably each, and campaigns individual missions a few times and tonight finish the first full Hoth campaign. There is certainly more planning involved to organize one.

Buy them for cards? Screw that, I'm here for the next level man! :)

I've thought about hosting some sort of event where each Unique pilot or upgrade can only be used by one person.  I'd have to tell everyone the rules first, and have people have lists prepared.  Then, roll a d100 or something and establish a pecking order.  Whoever gets the highest picks one unique (pilot, upgrade, whatever).  Move to the next.  Keep going until everyone has all their uniques picked out.

Not sure what else I would want to do.  Maybe different tables as portions of the same larger battle.  Once the side tables are resolved it moves to a big battle in the middle with whomever is left.  Could be fun.

My buddy bought both when they came out and we have yet to play them, myself i'm still pissed about not hearing anything about possible Imperial huge ships.

Yeah, me too, but I have faith. I wonder if they're aiming for the Gozanti, but had to wait for SW: Rebels to come out before they could finalize/negotiate it with Disney. Also, given that they have an 18-month schedule of releases, it's probably a process that has all the nimbleness of a Lambda Shuttle.

I've flown the CR-90 about three times, and the transport about three times since I bought them (which isn't very much).on another note it seems that the corvette goes down really quickly for such an expensive ship as imperials can take a lot more fighters. I think part of the reason for this is epic play is supposed to be two huge ships slugging it out with a small fighter escort and I can't get that feel until an imperial huge ship is released.

I have both huge ships, and last week finally got a chance to play an epic game.  I used the Tantive as a gunship with Roark boosting it's PS to 12 for shooting.  I had a BALL!    I'll definitely play Epic whenever I get the chance.  One thing to note:  an Epic game is not something to start at 7 on a weeknight when you have to work the next day.

This man's words shall be heeded! I full well expect this is precisely what's going on back stage as it were. Soon brothers, Gozanti and either Vigil-class Corvette's or Victory-2's will blot out stars

While my words are being heeded, let me warn people against yours. :P

I think the Vigil and certainly a Victory are a pipedream best reserved for Armada. I'm a member of the Lancer club, and I'm comfortable enough in my masculinity not to feel threatened by it.

I love, love, LOVE my Transport. It's so much fun to field with even just 150 points to play around with. Even when I lose with it, I still have tons of fun!~ It's an interesting ship to use because you can't exactly attack with it aside from Slicer Tools, but having it on the table and just the sheer size and scope of its movement is a thing of beauty since your opponent knows they can just be obliterated by it if they get touched by the front. The action economy of it is very different from standard ships, and each of them offer lots of benefits. Transports are great, especially with titles to aid them.

The Corvette on the other hand, has not been played in my local meta at all. Not once. Few people own them, and there hasn't been a casual game where we've had one on hand because bringing it can be a bit of a pain. That said, I'd love to try one someday, but I'm not entirely sure if I can afford one. I'm actually somewhat glad I didn't buy one on release.

My question to you all is loosely linked these huge ships, would you actually buy a huge ship or any ship just for the cards? $100 for the Tantive IV seems like you are purchasing a giant dust collector...

I think the small ships like the Falcon and Decimater are great, you can easilly field them in a 100 or 150pt battle, but these huge ships seem a little awkward to play with reguarly, so in the end, are you basically getting them for the cards?

I have one of each of the huge ships and am considering another freighter. I haven't used either one yet and haven't played a single epic game. But, I also wouldn't buy one just for the cards.

I got into X-Wing to satisfy a desire to collect something. I was lucky enough that it turned out to be a game that I also enjoy playing. In the end, though, I'm going to buy at least one of everything they come out with.

I've only used my CR-90 once, my GR-75 still has yet to hit the table.  The reason being that due to the rapid release rate, my friends and I are often wanting to try out new builds as opposed to sitting down for a long battle.

Originally I was only going to buy the Tantive, but I decided to order the Transport with it so I'd have all the Huge ship upgrades, and at $100 for both I'd get free shipping (at miniature market). After playing through the missions for both I ended up liking the Transport more than the Tantive, but I haven't used either much since then. I'm just waiting for some Huge imperial ship at this point, as Epic play feels a bit unbalanced without them. The Empire needs a Huge ship that is best countered by the Tantive in order to make it more valuable than the extra small ships you can fit along side a Transport. 300-400 points of imperials can be really tough to handle as is.

Thank you all for so many replies! Now I have a much better understanding of Huge ship values and how everyopne plays.

Early on some asked about what I paid, well I bought the Rebel Transport for $70 inc postage, they sent the Tantive worth $105, so I basically got the Tantive for a discount, but instead I decided I didn't want the ship I wanted the Transport, and seeming my friend couldn't really afford it I sent it back.

I really like this point you made that you were actaully looking for a collectable rather than a game so your purchase was made much easier to buy the big ships.

In future maybe I will buy it, I am not worried that I have missed out on a $35 saving. For now I need to play more games with all the ships I have got I think. I won my first game last night too! I have played about 12 games.

I am glad to have brought up the topic. Very interesting.

I agree, i think I will wait to see what Imperials get too. Then maybe Epics will be played more often too.

While yes the Vic-2 is extremely unlikely, probably even for Armada to be real, the Vigil is gaining traction as the best candidate. It even shows up in one of FFG's Star Wars RPG books with stats remarkably similar to the CR-90. Gozanti appears to be a shoo-in thanks to SW:Rebels. But hey, I want them all to eventually be made. Even if they are vague obscurities that I have know idea where they come from like the Lancer and Vigil and until recently Gozanti. :D

I've played an epic game with my CR-90 but not with my transport yet. Though in fairness my partner had the transport.

To be honest I would play with it as many times as I can get a game but since there are no Imperial Huge Ships out there yet it is really difficult to get a game together. You might have rebel on rebel but it does follow when playing epic who wants to be limited to shuttles and TIEs?
