[SPOILERS]: Star Wars: Rebels - Thoughts?

Recommended Posts

I had forgotten that this was the season finale. I actually watched it recorded rather than going directly to on demand to get it commercial free. I agree that the whirly helicopter lightsaber was a bit much, heck I never liked the whirl blade to begin with. I was disappointed with the Vader vs. Asoka fight. I wanted a resolution of sorts. I've really enjoyed the Vader cameos this season I imagine it's difficult to use him but not being able to really defeat him. He's the ultimate boogeyman.

That would imply that did not...

... do the obvious, cliched, write-by-numbers thing, and kill Ahsoka?

We won't know til next season (at the earliest), I imagine.

She may have joined the bleedin' choir invisible.

She may have been left for dead.

Or, as I recall, we didn't see a wide shot of Vader heading back to his TIE...he could have been dragging her behind, hoping to turn her.

Guess I'll wait until next season to watch any more episodes from where I left of.

Yes, the "lightsaber copters" were silly. Yes Vader's face could have looked worse.Yes, some of it was predictable. Do not care.... Still loved it! Kanan's injury, Maul's on the loose, Ezra opening a Sith holocron, only vaguely seeing Ahsoka venturing deep into the smoke.... Whats not to love?

I'm pretty sure you see a parting shot of her walking into a cave.

Entirely possible. During that closing montage, my DVR decided to skip a beat. Stoopid technology. It's been doing that with Flash and Arrow (live or recorded) for a while now, too, and Verizon can't do anything about it.

Great season finale, and a very satisfying conclusion to Ahsoka's arc although her fate is left a little vague.

The closing montage is very interesting for a couple of reasons... in the final moments we see Ahsoka and Anakin/Vader locked in mortal combat as the giant doors to the Sith temple/weapon close, the Phantom gets away, then a massive explosion.

When the closing montage begins we see Vader limping away... clearly he's worse off than when we left him.  Did he sustain more injuries during the duel?  Is he limping because he was further injured in the explosion? That question is never answered.

Then we cut to an owl type creature flying away, toward the lone figure of Ahsoka, she seems to stagger and disappear into the darkness of the bowels of the Sith temple.  So it raises about a million question, is it some sort of visual metaphor? If so is she dead? dying?  Is she alive?  Interestingly the imagery of the owl offers no clue since, if it's a metaphor it can mean two entirely different conclusions:

1)  In old Germanic culture, and in many American Indian cultures, the owl is seen as a harbinger of death.  So maybe Ahsoka is dead, or dying as we witness her walking into darkness (the underworld).

2)  In Greek and Roman mythology the owl is most often associated with Athena, the goddess of wisdom and strategy.  So if this is a metaphor, maybe we are witnessing her again making the wise decision and walking away from the larger conflict in the galaxy.  If she is alive, and were to return to the Rebel fleet her knowledge of Darth Vader's true identity would make her a liability as Vader would relentlessly hunt her down.  Walking away and letting Anakin/Vader believe she is dead might be for the best.

Either way I think we've seen the last of her on Rebels, and I'm perfectly okay with that because either way her story is finished (...for now at least)

The one thing I think Filoni did a great job was clearing the field so that Yoda's words in ROTJ to Luke remain canonically accurate, "...the last of the Jedi will you be."

1) Ahsoka, if even alive during ROTJ clearly states she is not a Jedi

2) Kanan is damaged goods, and I suspect will meet his fate next season

3) Ezra is likely doomed to turn to the dark side, or at least flirt with it before redeeming himself through some heroic act of self sacrifice.

My one big complaint, for the love of all that is holy, would you please get rid of Darth Maul. Having him keep showing up is just rediculous. If Maul can survive being cut in half they should have been able to give Qui-Gon an artificial heart. I always feel bringing Maul back is a Jump The Shark moment.

No less ridiculous than someone surviving getting all of their limbs chopped off, and then being totally consumed by fire... Realistically NO ONE could ever survive such an ordeal, but we are talking about mythology.  So canon establishes hatred can keep the Sith going despite seeming life threatening injuries... at least temporarily.

But clearly the Story Group is keeping Maul on the table for a later date if an Obi-Wan spin off movie ever comes to pass.

I choose to complain about those stupid helicopter lightsabers. Seriously, the Spinning Self-Dismemberment Functionality was bad enough, but now they're Mary freakin' Poppins? Oi vay.

I just thought it was funny.  Normally I'd hate that kind of thing, but somehow I was just amused, while still taking the threat of them seriously.

Have questions? The Producer has answers!

Filoni on "last of the Jedi":

“Yoda says, ‘When gone I am, the last of the Jedi will you be.’ ‘Of the Jedi’ could be a group of Jedi. You don’t know... That’s not to say I believe there are a lot of Jedi running around by Return of the Jedi. I think there are Force-wielding people, but whether they subscribe to the Jedi philosophy of how you use the Force is another question... But fans deal in absolutes, like Sith.

I'm a fan and I don't deal in absolutes. Ashoka is probably still alive. Ezra did not go all dark side and while the Sith Holocron did open for him its unlikely he will go dark side. I'm kinda disapointed that Maul who has new legs that may not be cyborg survived. Hopefully he won't survive season 3.

If anybody is disappointed with that finale, please turn in your Star Wars Fan Membership card on your way out.

Seriously, that was fricking great.

The joy of opinions, not everyone has to have the same one and no one is wrong.

So does that mean you didn't like it? Curious why.

Whether I enjoyed the episode or not is immaterial to the attitude displayed in the posting. Telling people that they should have liked it or "Get the F*** Out of here" is the problem I was pointing out.

I am willing to accept the Helicopters as "Something that could be done only on Malachor, because of being underground/low gravity/among sith ruins" so long as it's never really brought up again."

Eighth Brother being a Jango Jumper with a skeletal structure like a bird, I could accept.  Seventh Sister with her slight build, is a bit of a stretch, but okay.  Fifth Brother... no, just no.

Took a break from Rebels for a month, then watched everything in one sitting. The last two episodes weren't that interesting, but that finale was amazing. Some thoughts:

1. Glad to see Maul is coming back, as third parties are always interesting in a war.

2. Ezra's descent into the dark side, combined with Kanan's blindness, will make for an interesting dynamic in season 3. I think the Dark Side may make Ezra more interesting overall as a character.

3. I'm a grown man but I teared up when Ahsoka confronted Vader, and again when I heard Anakin's voice. I wasn't ready for that feel trip, even though I'd been preparing for it since that mid season trailer.

4. While the most dramatic (but also cliché) option was to kill off Ahsoka, I'm glad her fate is ambiguous. She's my favorite Star Wars character and I really want her to come back in the future, in this show or the next (even a movie, perhaps?).

5. The helicopter lightsabers really didn't bother me. This is Star Wars, where silly stuff like that happens all the time.

All in all, even though a couple of episodes left me a bit cold, I really liked this season's main story arc. Best girl Ahsoka never disappoints.

Loved hearing Matt Lanter! Then you will die! I also love the way they made Vader look. So much better than in Revenge. Why did that outfit look better than it did in ANH!? At least in Rebels it looks like a forerunner to ANH.

Partially due to this:

A lot of the design is based on the old McQuarrie goodness.

Gotta love all these "it must happen" predictions based on something one character said decades ago, taken entirely out of context...

I'm curious why you keep commenting on this thread, if you have no interest in watching the show and you just want to deride it.

Those helicopter sabers.  CRIPES.

Now that that's out of my system:

- So hard to go a full (double!) episode without my homegirl Hera.

- Way to include Chopper.

- Psyched to see the Inquisitor with the bellows-faced sallet for a helmet.  Good look.

- Super bummed to lose Seventh Sister.  Now whom will I have a weird crush on in this fantasy space-show for children?

- I'm coming around to Darth Maul as the unkillable bad guy, because cranky old man Darth Maul is like the dark side version of Old Ben Kenobi in the first 20 minutes of Star Wars.

- Ezra is still a wet rag of a character, but he's like the protagonist in a video game; he's there to move the plot forward and the color comes from everyone else in the cast.

- Great Vader fight, ambiguity or not.  Pausing for a few extra frames at the end of each strike was a stroke of animated genius.

If you watch carefully, I've been deriding the notion that the story can only go one way, the way that certain posters predict it will go, based on hackneyed worn-down cliches of pop fiction.  Or the notion that one line by Yoda must define the entire setting for all eternity, unto the heat death of the universe.
