focus token use: FAQ vs. rulebook

Recommended Posts

My ship is shot at. I roll three green dice and get Focus, Focus, Evade. My ship has a focus token.

preliminary question A: Can I spend the focus token and choose to change only one of the two Focus faces to an Evade face?

preliminary question B: Can I spend the focus token and choose to leave all the dice the way they are?

The rulebook plainly says both answers are "no". The FAQ plainly says the second answer is "yes" and implies that the first one is "yes" as well (though isn't explicitly clear).

So my real questions are these:

1. Am I reading the FAQ correctly?

2. If so, is this an intentional rules change, or is this a result of covering focus tokens and target locks in the same FAQ paragraph and getting the two confused?

I agree the FAQ is badky worded. The i tention of the FAQ was to clarify that you can soens the focus token ecen if there wdre no focus results to modify. So I think you are right that this is because they tried covering TL and focus in the same go.

Rulebook is quite clear you change all focus results.

An FAQ is not an Eratta so they didn't change the rulebook. They just clarified that you can spend a focus token without having rolles any focus results.

According to the rulebook it's spend a focus and change ALL dice.

According to the FAQ:

Spending Tokens
When attacking, players may spend focus tokens or target locks and elect not to modify any attack dice. When defending, players may spend focus tokens and elect not modify any defense dice and may spend evade tokens to add evade results in excess of the number of hit and critical hit results.

In this case any can mean, all, some or none. So the answers to your questions would be NO and YES. You can choose to change all or you can choose to leave them the way they are.

Edit: Clearly, I was trying to read this too late in the evening.

Although why would you spend a focus to change just one result when the same token would change the lot?

I don't think I would read "you may not do any" to mean "you may do any."

Right, it just says that you can spend one and elect not to modify any dice.  You either change all or none, you can't choose how many you want to change.

I stand corrected... and on a slight lean to the left...

One shouldn't try reading rules questions in the wee hours of the morning.

To get down to taking exactly 1 damage and avoid allowing a gunner shot.

And still spend a token to then move that token elsewhere (yes, I'm talking to you Garvin)

This. It's all or nothing, not all or nothing or some.
