The future of Descent or is Descent going into 3e?

Recommended Posts

Fantasy Flight is all about these idiotic card games, just look at the news that comes out it is usually Card game this, Card game that.

They soo lost me as a fan of the company with this non stop wave of highly overpriced card games. Not to mention what seems the MONTHLY jack up in prices of there games.

Imperial Assualt items have been raised in price 3 times now since January.

I own everything made in Descent

I own everything made in Runebound

I own everything released in Armada (NOT BUYING ANYMORE)

I own everything released in Mansions of Madness (NOT BUYING ANYMORE)

I own everything released in Imperial Assualt (NOT BUYING ANYMORE)

Ban me if you want, I could care less.

I have pics of the other games I list but it wont allow me to upload to prove what I say is true.

The kicker is I own ALOT of Lord of the Rings LCG because it seemed like a neat little game to play with my daughter but had I known FFG was going to turn into a LCG garbage dump I would have NEVERRRR supported it.

How bad is the LCG fad, just a couple of months ago they lost the license to one of their card games (name alludes me) and you would have thought the world had ended for these people.

Long Post about in the news

A post how the LCG community is not dead

BLAAAHH BLAAAHH BLAAAHHH

Look at the forums and check the post count for that game then compare it to Descent/Imperial Assualt. Did Descent get anything, or has anything been mentioned since the discovery of Electricity?

I made this account because I am soooo DONE with you FFG...err FLCG, and want you to know how you turned your fans against you.

ARES 1000% now Sword & Sorcery all the way and anyone who buys Descent stuff is silly, S&S is so much cheaper and the Developers actually support the game.

While I can fully understand your frustration your posts appear like an immature tantrum. Not to say that this can't be liberating sometimes, but I'd suggest moving on to the acceptance phase.

Sadly there isn't anything we can do to change the situation, since FFG does not communicate with their customers. For the same reason I doubt someone will ban you, as this would require someone of them reading your posts in the first place.

But I think you are drawing the obvious conclusions by voting with your wallet. Though the sad thing is, that due to FFGs failure to communicate with their customers, they will never have any context on why someone might not buy future products.

Delphi if you want to support this company by all means do, but I will not support this card game company any longer. Sword and Sorcery is where it is at.

I perfectly get where you are coming from, and as I said, not buying things from FFG going forward might be the only thing you can really do.

I've only been involved in boardgaming for the past 5 years (mostly due to FFG games), but due to their Star Wars focus and some other things they also seem to lose me. By now the Asmodee takeover has an eerie similarity to what happens, when EA aquires a game developer. While I'm pretty sure that FFG will continue to be somewhat successful in the near future, I'm not sure they will be where they are today (in a market with ever growing competition) forever. You can only raise prices and ignore your fans so much before they leave, for which you are the best example. To survive they either have to get new customers, or they have to focus on their successful lines.

But with all that said, Descent is still a great game, and I'm very happy to own it. And even though I'd have wished that they'd continue the game, I have enough content to play for years, perhaps even decades. Thanks to the app I can't see myself getting bored in the foreseable future.

So even if Sword and Sorcery is a good game (which I can't judge since I never played it), I really don't need to have another Dungeon Crawler at this point in time. And even though I really grew to like the Terrinoth/Mennara universe, I'm also not yet convinced that I will ever need a 3rd Edition either. After what they did with Descent they would at least have to prove that they are commited to support the game longer next time, before I'd consider buying in again (assuming that a 3rd edition would be any good of course). It will be an uphill battle for them to compete with all the other alternatives on the market, but that's the price they will pay for letting down the vast fanbase of a pretty successful game.

Great post Delphi.

I  started collecting games about 10 year ago and have a somewhat HUGE collection. ?

FFG is probably the biggest part of my collection but I have stopped buying their products of late and switched to other brands because I believe FFG dropped the ball and let other developers come in and steal there thunder, The price point for their games have sky rocketed and the gameplay just does not equal the amount you pay. Lt. packs are just a slap in the face to supporters, they once where $8 (early last year) now they are $12, (present price) and then look at Lord of the Rings Adventure Packs,,,same scenario.

Sword and Sorcery is a very good Dungeon Crawl game, and for the price it is hands down the better buy. D&D Adventure Series is another great buy for the price.

I do think FFG did a good job on the Mansion of Madness series, and believe THAT is how Descent should have been and not all this dumb LT packs, Heroes/Monster Packs non sense (highly recommend not buying those overpriced money grabs).

Look where they placed Star Wars Imperial Assualt in the Forums Menu (Minis section) and where they placed Descent (The Meehhh Section) that alone should tell you what they think of this game.

All of the Adventure Packs are in the LOTR Boxes, and someone is borrowing 2 copies of my Mansions of Madness that is why they are not in pic.

Its a shame.

I am continuing to buy products for the FFG games I have but due to the actions of the last couple of years I think I will not buy into any new product lines no matter how nice they may look.

The silence to fans is so frustrating. The teasers that come to nothing (promising CoC pod packs then nothing,  implying more is coming for descent then a year later we are still waiting etc etc).

Releasing products with exclusive promos (I do not want to have to buy a book-series that I don't want just to get a handful of exclusive cards for AH-LCG. Or a whole new core/collector set for LotR LCG full of unneeded digital content just for 2 new quests) massively frustrating.

The content for the imperial assault app is excellent but why so slow at release? Its almost like the enthusiasm has gone.

New awful packaging and other points such as price are obviously there but the above ones directly affect play.

Its just a big shame. Such great products and yet as a customer and collector I have kind-of lost trust.

And yet FFG do not read these forums so they never know the feedback from fans, which tends to look like they don't care. If only they read this feedback.

Games Workshop screwed over fans for years and it took a long time before people walked away and it was noticeable in profits but it did happen. Then GW started listening to what the fans had to say and changed some things and now are making huge profits again. Personally I am still not happy with GW but I do have to admit they have made great changes so-far this past 2 years in line with fan desires.

Sometimes now I almost want my FFG games to be discontinued so that I can call the collection complete and move on to other companies products that I feel more confident in the customer-support and loyalty (my ocd collecting aspect stops me choosing to abandon a game while content is still being produced). It's very sad.

And the silly thing is that it would be a huge help if they just publically said either "we are not developing anything for Descent2 in the near future" OR " We are developing something it's just going slow"  its that simple.

Hmm. It's relatively surprising how they just stopped making products for Descent 2nd Edition. Even if they just wanted to release Campaigns like Heirs of Blood, or products for Road to Legend, I believe that would have been good enough even for the hardcore fans.

It's just a shame that it seems unfinished. There was so much more content to explore, like doing a Campaign involving the Latari Elves and the Uthuk clans.

But no, all the focus went to Star Wars. And I get it, Star Wars itself is popular, so getting product out for it, is essential. X-Wing is a booming business...**** even I'm tempted to buy some ships. I actually won't though, because I'm more interested in the Wiz Kids version, Star Trek Attack Wing.

Now there is a company whom, actually rereleased it's product line, giving us better looking ships, more options and updated rules.

And so, I can't help thinking why FFG can't do the same.

Runewars wasn't the answer. For one, it was too **** big and cost way too much cash. 100 bucks for the starter game and then to add onto it, you had to buy 30 dollar units. Some people don't have that kinda paper. The thing is though, is that I did actually buy a unit of Spearman, but y'know what, it was actually for Descent!

Descent taught us that if you have something already well established, with great design, people will part with their money. And for all it's worth, Descent was a game line that was just that.

So why couldn't they have continued with it? Why was it just abandoned, just as Battlelore was? Nobody knows the answers to these questions more than FFG. But they don't tell us fans anything.

That's probably one of the worst things a company can do- lose touch with your fans. Because them, you have nothing. Just a pile of Star Wars paraphernalia that will one day die off.

You're not alone man, I rather think you're preaching to the choir. At least this is what I have to say on the subject:

I know huh, this clearly wasn't the plan...things must be really fubar at ffg. I sold my copy of mansions of madness and have stopped buying ffg games.

I saw Heroes of Terrinoth announced today. I have mixed feelings about this. It's nice to see FFG giving Terrinoth some love. I don't like that Descent 2nd edition is still being ignored. Perhaps this is indicative of more content to come but I see it as adding (recycling) heroes and enemies, locations etc. for HoT in lieu of making new releases for Descent 2nd ed.

What do you all think?

After Imperial Assault has just received another APP campaign (Yabba's Realm),
I hope that Descent 2 gets another APP campaign to finish,
best for the Labyrinth of Ruin a or Bilehall + Rusting Chains ..the others Great Campaigns.
Also one or two more PODs would be very useful, there are still too few.
When that's over, you can slowly wait for the Descent 3 as well.

What do you all think?

I think it's more that they had a good game mechanic in warhammer quest and then lost the license but wanted to do something with the game mechanic. The designers seemed to try and go independant with a different IP on kickstarter and had some negative reactions, then this was announced.

So i think its more that they wanted to use the game mechanics and so re skinned it to their own owned IP of terrinoth.

So I don't think it's related to descent production in any way. Yes it reuses art, characters etc but in terms of manufacturing and development I do not think there is any link.

I could be wrong

I don't want to rain on your parade but Wiz Kids are absolutely terrible with attack wing.

They release limited edition models that are extremely powerful and ruin the balance - usually they've been given out at cons and that sort of thing so if you visit one suddenly you're twenty times more powerful than anyone else. As bad as FFG's massive insane focus on card games has been they're not even in the same universe as Wiz Kids.

Hmmm Imperial Assault had a new digital campaign (jabba, the realm of the crime lord).

Mansion of Madness gets a new digital campaign (Altered fates)

lets hope Descent is next!!

I wouldn't mind an app campaign for Labyrinth of Ruin, but it might also be cool to have one that would combine two small boxes (unprecedented, maybe, but not wholly unreasonable).

Seeing a teamup between Valyndra and Bol could be cool.

Just anything really.

A nice easy sorry using the tiles monsters components from one of the expansion boxes to boost sales considering reprints still seem to be happening.

Fantasy stories don't need to be literary classics in a dungeon crawl or rpg as you are making the story yourself. True great stories are better but to get existing content used just any old save-princess, destroy-baddie, explore-uncharted would do thanks.

Come on ffg,  make money!

That is your opinion. Actually, I just like the ships, even if they aren't always done in scale.

It's absolute fact that they release one-offs at events that are better than anything they make otherwise.
