Dutch / Target Locks- not the normal question

Recommended Posts

The way I've always played is that the whole card text is the "ability". I've seen so many arguments over text on cards when they get dissected and dealt with on a sentence by sentence basis. If the ability as a whole can't be resolved then surely none of it is going to happen. And I think the rules reflect this in the pre-measure options. Sometimes I think we can over-think these things a little too much. Which in itself is not an entirely bad thing. It just shows we're passionate about the game.

Dutch choose TL with the intent to let his buddy get a TL, his buddy turns out to not be within range 2 of Dutch. Can dutch choose to focus instead? Or to put it an other way, can you meassure not only the range to Dutshes target but allso from Dutsh to his friends befor commiting to the TL? Standard rules vs competetiv rules?

I'm not trying to debunk anyones theory or Franks ruling, I'm genuinley curious of how far you can take the no lost opportunity thing in X-Wing?

Dutch's ability doesn't trigger until after the lock has been acquired, so there's no ability to measure.

IMHO, the "no lost opportunity" concept applies only to completely losing your action/opportunity.  The competitive rules pretty clearly lay out that if you try something and can complete it, you must do so.  So if you TL and complete it, then Dutch's ability activates.  If you try and let an ally lock but that ship can't do so for some reason, you can choose someone else.  But if that was the only one you don't get to go back from that - Dutch's TL was successful, so there you are.

It's not a guarantee that every ability or action will have exactly the outcome you want, but it's a safeguard against it doing nothing.

It's not so much that you can't lose the opportunity, it's more that you can't lose it just because you chose an invalid target.

If it were a tournament or people playing by competitive rules, and Wedge could TL what ever ship he declares as a target, then he must do so. But if Dutch gives Wedge a TL and there's no ships in range for him to TL, and there's no other ships in range of Dutch, then in that case he would lose the opportunity to use his ability.

Effectively what this comes down to, is that you can check the validity of every step of an action before you commit to that action.
