Xlyce 0 Posted May 28, 2009 I have the base game, and others tell me the expansion "fixes" the game. I like Doom (but play Descent more), so is there a good reason to buy the expansion? How much better does it make Doom? Thanks
Dam the Man 84 Posted May 28, 2009 The rules and difficulty level cards available as downloads, so those aren't really hard to check out. Of course, your mileage will vary depending on whether you regularly play as Invader or Sucka, err, Marine . I'm a regular Invader player myself. So what do you get that might be worth it? - new Invader deck; more balanced (Invader in my yells: WEAKER) than the base game one - new invaders; I like the variety, only the Revenant is an "always" choice over the Imp, Vagary figs look absolutely awesome, Cacodemon (I think that's enough drooling) - new scenarios (hey, saves the trouble of making them yourself ) - challenge of fitting everything into the base game box (what, doesn't count?) Scy800 1 Posted May 29, 2009 The expansion is a necessity if you like Doom the boardgame. It adss some cool new enemies (Revenants are a tad to powerful compared to Imps though), and balances stuff out with some nice mods and a much better invader deck. And some really nice new abilities for the marines and cool marine figures with chainsaws. The scenario's and addons are a bit easier on the marines all in all in comparison to the base game. And also it adds deathmatch and capture the flag modes you can fool around with. So get if if you want to play Doom in the future
Steve-O 473 Posted June 2, 2009 I haven't played around with the Deathmatch and CTF game modes yet, so I don't know how much of an impact they have. The rest of the expansion is basically more of the same from the core game, imho. That said, Cacodemons make the whole expansion worthwhile for me
HëllRÆZØR 0 Posted June 10, 2009 I think the best parts about the expansion are the more balanced invader deck (no auto-kill-cards-no-matter-how-good-the-marines-play), the cool new marine cards (ok, "Efficient Killer" is a little strong and Lithe pretty useless), the new invaders, a full campaign and the additional map tiles, in case you want to design own scenarios. I'm not sure wether I like DM / CtF, though, but I guess it's ok when the marines have equally strong cards (THREE CARD MONTY / TEXAS HOLD‘EM mod). Dam said: only the Revenant is an "always" choice over the Imp Mostly, but not always. The Imp is still sometimes more useful, for example if you have the "Wraith Jump" card, or if the targeted marine has a dodge order (Revenants have a yellow and a red die). But apart from that, I agree: In most cases, you want to spawn a Revenant. On a similar note, Demons can be better than Maggots (apart from the armor bonus), because Maggots only attack twice when activated, but not when watchful is triggered. ^^

True, WJ in hand when spawning an Revenant/Imp, Imp comes in handy. As to dodge, my friend prefers Guard, so double-miss chances don't get worse for me. I like the Maggots extra move as well, allows me to reach marines who have calculated that they are outside a Demon's range .
shnar 52 Posted June 25, 2009 The question is whether or not you like the base game. If you do, then the Expansion is a MUST! If not, then pass on it. This expansion does not detract from the game *at all*. Some game expansions add so much that it's almost a pain to use, or completely change the game (yes, I'm looking at you Game Of Thrones). But this one really just adds a lot of cool flavor, changes almost nothing in the game, and even provides different playability (CTF/Deathmatches). If anything, I'd get it for A) the extra missions and B) the fact that there will be no other expansions. (which makes me wonder, why couldn't they create just a book of missions, like they're doing for Descent?) -shnar
