Few questions from a new member

Recommended Posts

1)  I was thinking about getting Tannhauser as the game looked very cool but I wanted to know just how good it was/is it worth getting?  Also, how difficult is it to learn and how strategy-intensive is it?  Is the Operation: Novgorod expansion worth getting as well?

2) I saw a few posts about online tokens and something called ToY.  What are these?  Are the tokens official releases from FFG or are they "home-brewed" as it's referred to on the boards?

Thanks to anyone for their help, time and effort!!

 Definitely worth getting.

Take on You (abbreviated as ToY) is the French company that produces Tannhäuser. They have released some 46 'official' print and play Tokens. Many of these have made there way into the expansion releases. Out of the 46 tokens, FFG has successfully translated only a handful. For all of the translated Tokens, head over to Tannbunker. I have, with the help of online translators, native French speakers and players in the official ToY Tannhäuser league, translated every Token that has been released so far (even those that you will not find in the ToY equipment page).

Malechi is right - definitely worth getting. All the expansions are worth a look as well - the four figure packs ( Wolf,Yula,Gorgei & Ramirez ) - and the two expansions Novgorod and Daedalus. Four more expansion figure packs are due some time this year ( French versions ).

The game is fairly easy to learn . The strategy-intensity depends on the scenario and mode of play.

The original ToY tokens can be viewed and downloaded ( in French ) here

www.tannhauser-thegame.com/ixm_ixparsenal.php

follow Malechi's links for the English tranlations.

Oh yeah -  Welcome to the addictive world of Tannhauser

When did the Wolf figure and Daedalus expansions come out?  I haven't seen anything about thses anywhere, not even on the products page for Tannhauser on FFG's site.

And when you say "successfully translated" do you mean that FFG have only included a few of the online ones in their sets or do you mean they've brought over a lot of them but the translations are wrong (sorry if I'm being obtuse about this but it seemed the statement could be read either way)?

Wolf was a Pre-Order freebie. It may be purchased from France (in French, but you can find my translated Wolf Booklet PDF HERE) as it was only a For Sale item there. It may be possible to purchase the Wolf Package at GenCon as it was available there last year at the FFG booth.

Daedalus has yet to appear on US soil in a translated version. But may be purchased from France and then you can utilize the translation by Scottie Wolf and graphic recreation of the rulebook by myself HERE.

When FFG gets around to it they translate Tokens and place the translated PDFs on the Tannhäuser Support Page. They tend to be fairly lackadaisical about the whole translation process having translated less than 25% of the online Tokens. Once they do get around to translating the Tokens, the Tannbunker entry is updated to official and the original Unofficial translation is added to the thread to be kept for comparison. Although FFG translations are considered official, it is common for the FFG translations to ignore whole sections of effects for Tokens. Such as Wolftrap, where the ability to disarm the Wolf Trap is completely missing with absolutely no explanation as to why this is. Not to mention, FFG making up the word "Wolftrap" when translating "Le Piège du Loup" as no such word exists in the English language.

As for the FAQ, check the Tannhäuser Support Page, or better yet find the translated ToY FAQ over at Black Sheep Archives under Rules.

So any chance FFG will release either of these over here?  Any chance of me making it to GenCon is pretty much nil and ordering from France sounds expensive (I live in the USA) and if ToY's site is all in French then I'm pretty much screwed there as well since I don't speak French.

Besides, if FFG already has access to the Wolf mini, why not release it en mass?  Or sell any extras they might have on their site?  This makes no sense to me.  Hell, they could put him and all the online content (properly translated, of course) into one big expansion- either with Daedilus or a new one.  I know some wouldn't want to buy for something they can get online for free but I've never minded paying for the convenience of getting everything in one quality-produced product.

One last question:  Is there a link to ToY's website on any of the other sites you mentioned?  And is it all in French, English or a mix of both?

And I just wanted to thank everyone for their help and kindness without also getting a bunch of snotty unhelpful remarks like people usually do when they ask a question on message boards.

 Three choices for Wolf:

1) From FFG at GenCon (if they have it) for the actual cost of a Single Figure Pack.

2) Order from France and get the French language version and print out the translated version I mentioned for about 1.5 x cost of a Single Figure Pack with shipping.

3) eBay and pay through the nose about three to four times the cost of a Single Figure Pack.

Of the three choices above, Option 2 is the most economical (unless you already live in Indiana).

As for the links ...

What do you think have been posted all over this thread?!?!

Aaaaaarrrrrgggghhhh!

Again Mal is right about you options for Wolf.

option 1 - If a mate is going to Gen-Con get it that way but as for why FFG won't sell Wolf online don't go there we've been having these discussions about FFG and Wolf availability for ages

option 2 - ToY do not sell outside France ( probably due to contractual obligations ) but these two French based shops do and their sites are in English. So take a look  -- links take you straight to the ToY or Tannhauser stuff unfortunately as I write this Wolf is not avaiable but he does come up on these listings every so often so patienece is the order of the day. I've used the second of these links with no problems and I know some others have used the first link.

www.ludibay.net/take-on-you-m-257.html

or

www.ludikbazar.com/advanced_search_result.php

option 3 - eBay is not the way to go unless you are really really desperate. The last time Wolf came up here in the UK he went for £51 - $75 and that was for a French version heaven only knows what an English version would go for.

There is a delay of 12 to 18 months between ToY releasing material in French and FFG releasing in English hence Tannbunker's efforts in the translation department are essential. FFG has not released any online material for over 6 months with the exception of the Novgorod rules. The tokens have not been touched for over a year. ???

As for links they are in the blue/green letters all over this thread. The Official web site www.tannhauser-thegame.com/ readily translates to English with Google's translation page (but the transaltion can be a bit wooley with French colloquialisms). The thread on the index page here new.fantasyflightgames.com/edge_foros_discusion.asp will take you to all the best stuff out there.

Happy hunting

Thanks, everyone.  I knew the blue stuff were links but I was asking about links to ToY, which I didn't see.  If I missed any I apologize.

All this seems like a lot of work just to play a board game.  I looked the Tannhauser site and it looked like it had a ton of cool info and updates and stuff but I don't understand French and I couldn't any translation option to work.  It also looked like they were putting out at least one, possibly two. new single minis but I couldn't really tell.

As an aside I saw that someone was having trouble understanding the rules, at least due in part to the translation (something about how mission objectives are chosen and/or achieved).  Are they that wonky/unclear?  Is it one of those games where you need to get online a lot for rules clarifications, errata and FAQ's and such?  Or is it pretty easy to play right out of the box?  I don't mind games that make you think so long as they don't give you a headache along with it.
