Altered Cards legality?

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I would like to know if altered cards are legal for sanctioned tournaments like Regional Championships, National Championships and World Championships?

I am thinking about fanmade painting over official legal cards for example, not alternate art promotional cards.

I have not yet FFG LCG cards’ example because I am trying to check their legality before altering my own cards.

Here is a link in order to let you see my references:

Thanks in advance.

Best Regards,

Rémi.

I guess they are perfectly legal, no matter if the alteration is fanmade art, signed by Lukas, or just moustaches over Kate face :P. As long as you use the cards produced by FFG, and the card is still recognizable.

I would like to see those fanmade cards you create, BTW.

It's a gray area. Strictly speaking, they're cards that have been marked or damaged, which should be perfectly legal as long as you have opaque sleeves. Definitely check with the TO ahead of time.

From the official Tourney rules:

All Android: Netrunner cards produced by Fantasy Flight Games are legal for tournament play (unless banned). No other cards or proxy cards are permitted. In North America, cards are legal upon their release. Competitors outside North America should check with their TO to determine which cards are tournament legal

Altered cards aren't specifically mentioned, so as such I don't believe there is any official precedent. However, I have seen it said that altered IDs are allowed at TO discretion, with the following provisions:

  • all relevant rules text must be clear and able to be read.
  • your opponent may request you to use an unaltered card (so make sure you have one)
No other altered cards may be used.

Again, this is not officially stated in any rules document, but I believe this was a statement from someone within FFG.

Annotated art cards might be acceptable, but creating your own alternate art cards from scratch would be a bit too far and most probably illegal for tournament level play (and the higher up you go the less I imagine it would be accepted).

Even then it would be likely that you would have to have "unadulterated" versions on you just in case.
