Making a Shadowrunner

So, I have yet another idea for a character.

This time it's a shadowrunner.

But I'm unsure as to how to go about making it.

What do you mean with "Shadowrunner"? Are you talking a recidivist freelancer like the freelance cyberpunk criminals from the Shadowrun RPG?

Hiveborn Mercenary or Bounty Hunter, using either the Scum, Guardsman or Assassin class. The hive origin so that he or she knows the appropriate level of technology and environmental adaptation, and the profession as their motif for travelling and trespassing. Skills and equipment would largely depend on their individual focus (runners from the Shadowrun IP also come in a variety of different styles after all), but for an archetypical approach that fits into 40k as a solo operative I'd suggest a Gunslinger advanced class who supplements their basic firepower with a variety of tech-tools such as psyber lures, tracking devices, and/or cogitator-disrupting dataspikes.

 

In addition to the Inquisitor's Handbook, GW's own d100 game Inquisitor may offer some more inspiration in the form of Desperados. From outsourced fiction, I also think that Kal Jerico (Necromunda Bounty Hunter with his own comic series) or Lowen Tegget (the tracker sent after Miriael Sabathiel) might be good examples. Of course, the generally poor state of technology in the setting does limit the cyberpunk aspect of traditional Shadowrunners somewhat, but it shouldn't be hard to introduce some elements to the game.

Yeah, though depending on your interpretation it may be much less likely that an individual from such a world gains the necessary ... shall we say freedoms to develop a suitable mindset, not to mention being able to possess such technology rather than just being surrounded by it.  ;)

How monolithic are the Forge Worlds?

 

I'm sure that depends on the source (remember, there is no canon and contradictions abound), and thus one's own preferences. But I found the description in the Dark Heresy Inquisitor's Handbook to be very close/compatible to the one in GW's tabletop rulebooks, and in both sources Forge Worlds seemed very organised - with every single inhabitant's life being tracked and assigned to a workplace where they spend most of their time, and with there being more lobotomised servitors than normal human workers. With such a "police state" that exerts total control over its people (recycling any troublemakers into more servitors), it just did not sound like the kind of environment suitable for a citizen to even just develop the appropriate mindset and grow into such a role as is being discussed here.

 

That's not to say that exceptions could not exist, and come to think of it I would probably be able to make a somewhat believable backstory even under such circumstances (like: a young citizen being separated from their peers, taken under the personal tutelage of a Tech-Priest who trains them as their personal agent for a shadow war with other local Mechanicus factions) ... but even then a Hive just seems like a more obvious origin. After all, would a Hive not come closest to how the Shadowrun setting looks like?

I suppose it also depends on how rebellious or professional you want this Runner to be...

 

But as suggested before, it would also be possible to just make up a different kind of Forge World that is less strict and less controlled. Even though I feel it would "muddy the waters" that make them different from Hives, such an interpretation would be a viable option as well, and just as correct as all the other descriptions of Forge Worlds we have seen so far.

Well, it won't matter anyway, as the Home World will be randomised.

Assassin's probably out, as we start pretty close to Ascension and I don't want to play a Vindicare.

So, it's most likely gonna be either Scum or Guardsman.

Note that Ascension RAW would also allow Assassins to transition into a few other paths, such as the Storm Trooper. Though when I'm thinking of the archetypical Shadowrunner, the Desperado class (an option for Scum) probably comes closest.

You could also ask your GM if you can pick Desperado even as an Assassin?

Depends on how you play 'em! In the end, if you strip away all the Talents and Skills that separate one class from another, you are still left with a person who can at least attempt anything their personality allows them to. Plus, it's worth pointing out that even though Dark Heresy's advancement schemes are notably more limited than the systems in Black Crusade, Only War or DH2, the Assassin still has one path that is concerned more with infiltration rather than killing, and you could take some very useful abilities from there.

 

Plus, you could always ask your GM for other useful Skills/Talents as Elite Advances.

 

I'm still thinking Scum with Gunslinger package would be the best fit for a Shadowrunner, but if you want to try an Assassin, I'm sure you could create a viable ranged combat specialist without being forced into the Vindicare!

 

In fact, my very first Dark Heresy character was a Hiveborn "Assassin" I just played as a cheeky ganger who was good with her custom-modded autogun. Would've fit right into a game of Necromunda, too. Or Shadowrun, for that matter.  :P

Hi there,

first and foremost, I suggest you gain a copy of the Book of Judgement. If you want to talk "professional criminals" it is good to know about the Underworld. Even if you see yourself as "independt". And it has a number of nice packages

Cold Trader (Adept; Assasin, Cleric, Scum, Tech-Priest) is another word for "illicit technology smuggler" which is very much cyberpunk.

Hive Gang Member offers access to Tech-Use..and Gangs are "Cyberpunk" as well, aren´t they? ;)

Kasballica "Noble" allows you to act as a "fixer" or "middlman".

Sibellus Scrounger is good for the kind of low-life dregg that bites through the misery of lives and is not going to take it. And again, it provides Tech-Use

The already mentioned IH has the Reclaimator career which helps to turn a scum into the tech-fixing near-recidivist many cyberpunk characters are.

But beware! Cyberpunk comes from a very different background then DH. If cyberpunk is "Tech, Implants and Gadgets", then you can be very cyberpunk. If it is "me against the system!", DH will not give you much leash, unless you work for an radical inquisitor. Of course, you character can still has that attitude. It is just so that his peers will be unlikely to put up with if he acts to much on it...

If you want to Shadowrun'ify more than just your character, you should look up the Abhuman templates in Rogue Trader & Only War.

I see...but it cannot hurt to kindly ask him in regard to the named "character packages" and your plan. You can tell him that "you were just given the names and short descripitions, not more" & show him this topic. Perhaps he just doesn´t like the gear it introduced or he does not like you to know about the background of some of the criminal organizations.

Hmm.

Do Assassins have anything to do outside of combat?

 

In my current campaign, the assassin had to quickly fill in the role of the team's face; one of the branches of the assassin's career goes into more social lines, (like a high society assassin rather than a back alley stabber) giving some basic interaction skills (like charm, decieve, but at at basic, none-to-little +10 or +20)

 

Assassin also got inquiry at rank 1, making them at least capable to do legwork right off the bat alongside the scum.

 

but for a SR-like character I'd go..

 

Hive World

Guardsman (Sammy)

Scum (faceman)

Assassin (sniper or melee)

Adept (for some decker-like ancyclopedic knowledge)

 

Get bionics; arm, eye, leg; perhaps even that thief's light from Rogue Trader (Hostile acquisition), MUI,

Leather jacket

nice hair cut

style (quite important)

attitude (important)

 

and get Lho; in any good cyberpunk future, everybody and their mother smokes.

Well, if it's just the background, he doesn't need the book for that and could just make up stuff himself, or use the descriptions from the Inquisitor's Handbook (or any other inspirational material). ;)

 

Especially if they're rolling Homeworlds randomly.
