Epic Smalls

I've noticed that, while it underperforms in 100pt, the TIE defender has been the king of our Epic games. Soontir Fel and the TIE phantom however have been significantly less dominating in the 300pt format. Which of the non-huges do you think are more at home in Epic than Standard and vice-versa, and which are solidly at home in both (the Firespray comes to mind)?

Man do I feel like I predicted this. :P

I think the E-Wing, A-Wing, and Hawk are all better in Epic as well.

The Phantom is awful in Epic. It's too hard to dodge 300 points of fire and still get a shot.

Epic also has more stress manipulation, leaving certain ships(Interceptors and Phantoms) extra in the cold. This will change some if the Empire ever gets ahold of Coms Booster and PS buffs.

I actually agree 100% on this. Which is why I picked up 2 Defenders just for Epic play. Load them out and run them with Bombers and a solid escort of TIE (either LN or IN) and a shuttle or Firespray for anchor and have a blast taking down flocks of Rebels.

The falcon (not generic) sits well in both I feel.  You can really pimp it out in epic.  Same with bombers - having loads of points lets you go nuts on ordinance.

I think the E-Wing, A-Wing, and Hawk are all better in Epic as well.

 

I really wanna load up a bunch of A-wings with Ion Pulse missiles and do an A-wing Slash on a large ship.

 

Y-wings also probably due better (when loaded with Torpedoes as it seems they were intended) a mixed load of Flechettes +Protons would be nice to fulfill a dual role of huge ship attack and dogfighting but Turbolasers eat them alive I'm afraid

Well, I've had no problem with the Defender in 100 point matches, but I have enjoyed it greatly in larger games and epic games. I absolutely love giving them ion cannons, they are cheap control and make that k-turn even stronger, plus they are excellent for picking off that last point of hull from range 3 targets.

 

I actually haven't tried to use soontir in epic games, but running some mid-level interceptors has worked fine for me in both formats too, especially my new favorite, RGT with Outmaneuver.

 

I haven't tried the Phantom yet in epic and I'm not too sure I want to. Did a team 300 point match the other day and my teammate ran Whisper. He died in the second round of fire after getting double blocked on his decloak and maneuver.

 

Omicron Group Pilot seems to make an amazing attack ship in Epic games though, much moreso than in regular matches because you don't need the Engine Upgrade. Just deploy on one side, slow swoop through the middle, and you'll likely have targets until the game is over. It's a supremely cheap 10 HP, and a few upgrades can make it a real beast for the points. Plus with an Ion Cannon you can plink shots at Huge ships to make them slightly less effective throughout the whole game.

I figure 3 Defenders with Ion cannons basically shut down huge ships. And while they take a pounding you have 201 points of Bombers and Firesprays and Ties to flank with.

Or Brath and Vessery on their own, maybe one or both having Ion Pulse Missiles. Seriously, hitting a transport with those things right after it inadvertently spends all its energy has been, in my experience, absolutely devastating. Especially if hit with two. Because they are counting on taking a slow maneuver afterwards, and if you hit them with both missiles or one and an ion cannon, then they get nothing and are left essentially defenseless. You also keep your lock with IPMs, and you essentially don't even have to use it up. You either get at least one result on the attack and it goes through, or you have to get two if they reinforced that section (but if you have two defenders/missile carriers having each locked a section than it doesn't even matter). In one game, I had Brath do exactly this. In the following turn, he used his ability to inflict two Direct Hit! cards and a Command Pod Casualties, very nearly destroying the Transport on his own. Vessery followed up for the kill shot, using a shuttle's TL to secure the damage needed.

 

So yeah, of all the ships Imperials have I'd say Epic gives OGP, Vessery and Brath a much more beautiful place to play.

The OGP can get taken apart pretty hard by the Tantive though, while it practically can't touch defenders.

Although with Ions I suppose that matters less, but I don't like Shuttles in Epic play as much.

Ah. Well, i suppose it's a very YRMV thing, but they've done great for me because when faced with all these other threats, people won't go for them in the first few turns. But whenever I lose a shuttle fast, it's usually when i take one built to be tanky. I had one with Flight Instructor and Sensor Jammers get killed in two shots. It had taken a single bit of damage from an assault missile ( so not techincally a shot) then failed to do anything about 4 hits from a b-wing, then failed to do anything about 2 hits and 2 crits from an x-wing. Both crits were "Direct Hit!," so even if that missile hadn't hit me i'd still have lost it in two.
