Purging virus counters & Lamprey

Can Lamprey be trashed if there are no virus counters in play to trash? Technically even if the corp uses three clicks to purge virus counters, if there aren't any in play, they haven't really purged anything, they are just trying to use a function to trash a card that is not there to trash a card, its there to purge virus counters. So it seems that the trigger effect is not really met too me.

The trigger effect is met when the Corp takes an action which purges virus counters. There don't have to BE any virus counters in play for the Corp to do this; it's simply an action they can take. So yes. Honestly I'm actually slightly horrified this is even a question.

I can see where you're coming from, but yeah I think it's the action being taken, rather than whether the action does anything, that's the key point.

 

So even if the number of counters actually being purged is zero, they're still being purged and Lamprey dies.

I'm sorry for sounding condescending, but the question sounds like the worst type of rules-lawyering. To me the intent of the card (and the design) are crystal clear, and I genuinely had a hard-time reading that as a genuine 'is this how it works' type of question, as opposed to a 'can I make a valid argument for this obviously-against-design-intent' question.

How does one receive a virus?. I have searched the rules and can only find reference to purging them.

Viruses are a program subtype. The runner installs them like any other program (though some, like Parasite, have additional restrictions).

Most viruses gain virus tokens through in-game effects; when the Corp purges viruses then all these tokens are removed. Lamprey (the virus in the initial poster's question) does not use virus tokens, but is itself trashed if the corp uses a purge effect.

Yes. All virus tokens from all installed cards.

Yes. Cyberdex is simply a way to purge with clicks left over. If we ever see future cards with the purge effect, they will work the same way unless specifically noted otherwise.
