How about a mixed Aces expansion?

Recommended Posts

According to the old Decipher CCG, TIE fighters at the battle of Endor had been upgraded with maneuvering thrusters.

To provide some customizability for the basic TIE fighter, create a TIE Fighter only modification that adds one Evade die. Making it cost three or four points would be fine because it' would make them too expensive to swarm up per se.

At three points Iit would invalidate SD, but on TIE fighters only. Alternatively, they could make it cost four to be a bit safer.

Rebel Aces should have been A-wing and Y-wing.

B-wing is still relatively new (Wave 3) and acknowledged to be one of the best and most popular Rebel ships without further attention.  By nearly all accounts, the A-wing was overpriced and the Y-wing should have been given the option for EPT!  I don't particularly buy into the argument for giving the Y-wing a "Crew" slot but if the B-wing is getting that option then the Y-wing sure as hell deserves it as well.  I really have no intention of buying the Rebel Aces expansion pack (so far the only one), even for the cards as I already have enough A's & B's.  Wasted, wasted opportunity on FFG's part I think, so far my only disappointment with them and the XWM game.  Wasted...

On the Imp side, the TIE Advanced is generally considered to be over-priced but I don't know how FFG could fix that without something similar to the "Chardan Refit" for the A-wing.  TIE Interceptors already got extra love and I have yet to see a valid argument for the TIE Bomber needing ANY kind of upgrade, whatsoever.

I collect and play both Rebs and Imps and have no favorite faction, just calling it as I see it.

Why am I so bitterly disappointed about this?

I agree, however luckily I am in a slightly better position I think than you are, having only 1 A-wing, and no B-wings (since I lean more Imperial) I will be able to pick up a pack and not need to worry about having to many of either of those ships, even though primarily I will be purchasing them for the Proton Prockets :) the other cards will just be a bonus.

That said I think it definitely would have made more sense to do a Y-wing over a B-wing, especially Keyan in my mind SHOULD have been a Y-wing (that'ts what he flew in the movie and survived the Death Star run in after all) And for Repaints we could see a Tierfon Yellow Aces or we could get a version with the Armor on (for a "factory standard" look, though i think I like the armor off better myself)

Part of the reason I think the Proton Rockets are as cheap as they are is to compensate for the expense of the carrying ship, namely the A-wings/Advanceds/(Defenders too I suppose) and the scaling off of agility as some have mentioned allows this to be less effective and therefore less efficient on the ships that baseline have higher efficiency such as Z-95s, Falcons, Firesprays, Bombers.  So in that regards this could be a decent fix for the Advanced.

I think its possible we see Keyan show up in a Y-wing. Han and Lando have shown up in different forms, Vader too. I think a Battle of Yavin Aces pack with a Y and Adv would be pretty cool. I'd pick up a second Adv or two from that box.

Stop trying to make SW:Rebels happen. It's not going to happen.

I'm not trying to make it happen. It's simply a guess. Much of it depends on how much pull or influence Disney has over existing contracts between LFL and FFG. If any company is a true master of product tie-ins and cross support marketing, it's Mouse Inc.

I don't particularly buy into the argument for giving the Y-wing a "Crew" slot but if the B-wing is getting that option then the Y-wing sure as hell deserves it as well.

From the wookieepedia article on the Y-Wing...

The BTL-S3 was a two-man strike fighter, and was the most common Y-wing configuration.[11] The weapons systems officer typically operated the ion cannon turret when needed.

That's all I need argument wise for it to get it's much awaited crew slot

Yeah, I got that.  I assumed that the turret was operated by a gunner but that was factored into the basic ability.  Just because the Y-wing has more than one seat does not mean that it  needs/should have a "Crew" slot.  The CR-90 Corvette has SIX (6) turrets- does this mean it should have SIX (6) "Crew" slots?  What about all of those guys working in engineering... or navigation... or communications... or maintenance... or pilots... or cooks?  How many crew on Lambda-class shuttle?  How many "Crew" slots should it have?

I'm not opposed to the Y-wing having a "Crew" slot, just don't think it is necessary.  I just happen to think the Lack of EPTs is a more egregious oversight.

A Y-wing & Tie Advanced Set does make sense but so does a Tie Advanced & Tie Bomber pack. I kind of like the former better but I think the latter is more likely, although I don't know what they would do with the y-wing as an HWK doesn't make sense.

And while I agree that the Y-wing should have been in the Rebel Aces pack, I am not disappointed with the B-wing. While the generics are popular, the named pilots are not so I think some new good B-wing pilots is good.

I feel like the bombers are underused, except in epic games. Plus, it'd be a bomber pack, and that fits really well. A bomb-equipping modification for Y-wings, and a whole bunch of new bomb types for the pair. I'd like that a lot, as bombs are just about never used either.

Another clue to suggest that more Ys might be on the way:

R5-p9 belongs to gray squadron pilot ekelark yong. Just like porkins droid was released before he was, this could foreshadow at least one new Y wing pilot. And given how well porkins synergies with his astromech, I'd expect yong to do something like generate focus when he takes damage.

Cheerio,

Ben

They should release it as a "Battle for Yavin IV" expansion. Together with the base set you get Vader and two TIEs vs Luke and (named?) Y-Wing.

Cardboard tokens for turbo laser towers and exhaustport....

It should of course also have alot of new pilots and other goodies.

I would love a Y-wing / Advanced mixed faction aces pack.  Lets give these iconic ships some serious loving!

Well, the Advanced does have the advantage of having named pilots ready to go.

Storm Squadron (currently in the game) was the imperial garrison on Tatooine in Star Wars: Galaxies. They were your instructors in space combat if you played Imperials.

  • Commander Alozen (Storm Leader) - you never fought him as an Imperial (obviously) but I gather he had a scary upgraded advanced with heavier-than-normal but less accurate guns.
  • Commander Oberhaur
  • Lt. Colzet  - This guy was literally your flight instructor, doing basic training.

Also, there's another TIE advanced squadron in the demo version of the X-wing Computer Game - I can't remember which mission it relates to in the game. You're fighting shuttles and freighters with assault gunboat escorts, and then eventually a star destroyer jumps in. If you keep playing long enough, a flight of TIE advanced jump in too - I think they came up on your HUD as something like "Deathwing Flight?".

(If anyone else can remember the name, please correct me!)

The more I think about it, a mixed aces expansion set could be a really great idea.  As the game grows, it can be harder and harder for a new player to get started, and a Y-Wing and a Bomber, or Y-Wing and Advanced, would make for a great 2-pack in it's own right, but especially if it came with some new stuff that would also compliment the core set - IE upgrades that can go on TIEs and X-Wings as well.

It could turn in to the perfect 2nd purchase for any new players starting the game into it's 3rd year.

I think a mixed pack is ok, y-wing/advanced both ships need some love as many already stated.

But if FFG decided to release a new imperial aces advanced/bomber and a new rebel aces y-wing/?? it will ok, specially if every aces pack came with different pain jobs. :)

Maybe not even call it aces.  Maybe call it:

Galactic Bombers:

includes repainted Bomber and repainted Y-Wing:

Bomber Retrofit: Torpedo Slot upgrade:  turns a torpedo slot into a bomb slot

High Yield Payload: Modification - Bombs that have a blast radius of Range 1, now have a radius of range 2.

A new type of proximity mine that is smaller, but moves each turn.

Y-Wing Title that adds copilot.

Bomber Title that allows bombs/mines to be placed either behind your ship OR in front.

Y-Wing pilot that rolls an additional attack die with every secondary attack, and has elite pilot skill

Bomber pilot that moves at pilot skill zero, but does actions/drops bombs at pilot skill 9.

It seems to be assumed that 'Aces' expansions are meant to fix a broken ship. I don't think this is always true.

Besides more pilots, I think the Y-wing doesn't need a fix, anyway. But I would love to see it done up a bit. I think the Bomb refit makes the most sense.

Advanced? I'm not sure, but I think it might be done.

What about a Y-wing/ Headhunter set? (Get ready for comments from 3rd faction enthusiasts here)

Heck yeah!  I completely agree.  A y-wing bomber combo would be sweet!  Both of those models already have existing piltos who have some of the best abilities in the game but I would like to fly them both more.
