And the TIE Reaper?

Possibly, on a mission by mission basis.

Really, the old games suffered from a model count limit. Pirates flew mainly Ywings because they already had Ywing models. Rebels stole Lambadas and Escort shuttles because they already had the models. And everyone used CR90s because they didnt want to make more models. We're lucky our gunboat wasnt just a clone wars Ywing in the first place.

It was not only to save development/technical resources, but also creative resources. When these games came out, there weren't many extra ship designs. They mostly worked with what they had (and added some other specialist ships tp fill the holes).

That's not entirely true - I mean, we certainly didn't have the variety of ships we have now, but...West End Games had been the source of so many ship designs, and had a pile of ships from back in the 80s.  It's where we got the Z-95 design from (the ship was mentioned way back in the Han Solo novels, but it was West End Games that decided the early preproduction art for what became the X-Wing should become a 'Z-95'), but also Victory-class Star Destroyers, what an Interdictor cruiser looked like, etc.

And at the time of the LucasArts games, there were plenty of the WEG designs that were not in use.  Indeed, even something as ubiquitous as the Z-95 (which did appear in later games in that series) was absent from the first game, 'X-Wing'.

Only so many models you can include in a game, when you are shipping on a handful of floppy disks!

I really think the Dx stormtrooper transport should have been the Sentinal shuttle all along. It's basically the first order landing craft people have been complaining about since TFA.

If I were remaking the old games, I'd be usingthe sentinal for the DX, and probably the Deci for the imperial assault transport. Imperial CR90s would be either Gozantis or Raiders, depending if they hypered you in or not- and the M/Nebulon is totally an Argkittens.

Completely agree.  The DX looks like a Star Trek shuttle craft and doesn't fit the Imperial design aesthetic at all.

Of course, if I was remaking the old games, I'd also replace the Gunboat with the TIE Hunter and the Missile Boat with the TIE Punisher.  A sentiment I'm sure will be SUPER popular in this thread...

Also, replace the Escort Carrier with Imperial Light Carrier.

It's cooler that the Missile Boat, which looks like somebody's sled.

"On Admiral Thrawn's orders's we've stripped most of the laser weaponry from your gunboat and added more missile pods. With all power to engines and the new Sublight Linear Aceleration Motivator, the Os-1 gunboat is the fastest thing in space, and your payload of 40 advanced concussion missiles should be more than enough to handle any opposition you encounter.

It was not only that they were limited by the distribution media (floppies), but also by RAM.
X-wing was supposed to run on machines with 1 MB of RAM (a phone today has 2000 times more RAM). That had to be enough to hold all the models, the music, the sound effects, the sprites, and of course the game engine and all other things the user was running in the background (DOS, mouse and CD drivers, etc).
It made sense to have just a few different ship models, and having everyone reuse them.

TIE Fighter doubled the RAM requirement to 2 MB to they could have many many more concurrent different ships.

About the Z-95, with the polycount and lack of textures and detail in 3D models those days, it was kind of hard to visually distinguish a Z-95 from an X-wing with its s-foils closed.
I think it was good idea to restrict the first game to canon ships, at least for the rebels and neutrals, since all roles could be well covered by either the X-Wing, the A-wing, or the Y-wing (the B-wing was just basically the exact same role as the Y-wing, but better).
However, the Empire, being the faction that you are fighting all the time, needed more variety, and some extra ships to fulfill some roles that the TIE Fighter, TIE Interceptor, TIE Bomber and shuttle, would be poor at doing.
The gunboat and the stormtrooper transport fulfill some roles that, in particular, the TIE Bomber weren't great at, like being missile platforms due their lack of mobility, or striking capital ships, since they didn't last much against turret fire from frigates or cruisers. Also, the Empire was totally lacking an ionizing ship (the lambda shuttle doesn't have ion cannons).
And as boarding craft, the lambda shuttle would have being a bit weird, since it kind of fits more as staff or VIP transport than as a war vehicle.

I'm comparing the preview of the gunboat with FractalSponge's render and it's hard to deny that FFG 's model is 95% identical to his.

The solar panels have exactly the same shape, and most of the paneling lines in the mini are identical to those in FractalSponge's pictures.

It cannot be a coincidence since the previous official designs of the gunboat have never been like this.

The only notable difference I see is the little two red dots behind the wings in the mini, that aren't there in FractalSponge's renders.

Do you think they have asked him for using his model? Perhaps they don't even have to, but it would be nice to know.

You should must ask him.

Personally, I think the Sponge's designs are a notch above top, and I have no complaints about the look of the gunboat.

It's sleek, it's techy, it's right off the drawing board assembly-line fresh. Now I know that bothers some people who expect the dreary post-republic era to have a bit more rust and dust, but fear not! I have the solution to turn this:

28-sized.jpg

Into this:

And what is it you ask?

Why paint of course!

First drybrush here and there with a grey or dark grey to add scratches and wear, then add a few thinned drops of the rust to the wingtips and seams and let it drip down in a natural way. Just make sure to always brush down or else it'll look like your rust is ignoring gravity. (It only rusts in when in-atmosphere anyway so chill, I know the nature of teh space. :P)

My gunboats will not need rust. The Empire seems to be quite anal about keeping everything clean and tidy.
None of FFG's imperial ships have that layer of dirt and weathering that rebels and scum usually have. (I actually find the Kimogila in that picture too clean for having those big wide smooth areas)

That shuttle looks like was captured by rebels at some point. :D

No, but she's carried a lot of rebels on the inside. This squad is Outer Rim Prisoner Transport 2515.......they're a bit more gritty than those in the standard Imperial ranks.
