XG-1 "Star Wing" Assault Gunboat Thread

Completely agree.  The DX looks like a Star Trek shuttle craft and doesn't fit the Imperial design aesthetic at all.

Of course, if I was remaking the old games, I'd also replace the Gunboat with the TIE Hunter and the Missile Boat with the TIE Punisher.  A sentiment I'm sure will be SUPER popular in this thread...

Also, replace the Escort Carrier with Imperial Light Carrier.

No likes for you.  Just shame.

"On Admiral Thrawn's orders's we've stripped most of the laser weaponry from your gunboat and added more missile pods. With all power to engines and the new Sublight Linear Aceleration Motivator, the Os-1 gunboat is the fastest thing in space, and your payload of 40 advanced concussion missiles should be more than enough to handle any opposition you encounter.

Yup, we get the pretty model and both ships essentially.  I approve.

I'd agree that we kind of need the sentinel, and also agree that the original 90's DX-9 should have just been a sentinel, but here we are and the DX-9 is canon post legends (star wars comic anthem) So I really would like an official one. Until then, my unofficial one proxies as a shuttle.

Have to realize how old this thread is Fractal...

People have wanted the Gunboat for easily 3 years if not 4 now lol. If it wasnt almost always on the front page it would be labeled a necro its so old.

You can't kill the Gunboat
The Gunboat will live on
Legends tried to kill the Gunboat
But they failed, as they were smote to the ground
Disney tried to kill the Gunboat
But they failed, as they were striken down to the ground
FFG tried to kill the Gunboat Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha
They failed, as they were thrown to the ground

No-one can destroy the Gunboat
The Gunboat will strike you down with a vicious blow
We are the vanquished foes of the Gunboat
We tried to win for why we do not know

My gunboats will not need rust. The Empire seems to be quite anal about keeping everything clean and tidy.
None of FFG's imperial ships have that layer of dirt and weathering that rebels and scum usually have. (I actually find the Kimogila in that picture too clean for having those big wide smooth areas)

I'd definitely expect outer rim and beyond garrisons/patrols to have rust and score marks on them, where there is less emphasis on presentation and enforcement through visual deterrence. I love the squeaky clean look of Imperials, but I also like the look of some battle-hardened long term veterans on the fringes of known space. Adds to the lore, story telling and realism that the image of the Empire isn't all what it seems to be.

Seeing some rusted up, battle scarred Arquitens and support ships and cruisers patrolling with some grizzled veteran crew and pilots.... a story that should and needs to be told. Where the stakes are higher and the stories are gloomier.

There was a hint of that in the Aftermath trilogy, but so far for me the best approximation of this Dune feeling is SCAR Squadron

Are your THE FractalSponge? :o
What is your take on FFG's model being almost identical to yours?

Yeah that's me :)

I'm glad they used the design, since I obviously think it's prettier than the others. Would be nice if they had me do some of the art using it when it comes time :P

This entire thread is about the XG-1?!

If you're the actual fractalsponge, you do amazing work! Just curious, Did ffg pay you for the use of your design language in their sculpt?

Hey Fractal, welcome to the forums!

I agree, your vehicle renders have been spectacular. FFG/LFL may not wish to contact you to provide the render and an artist to pretty it up, but I am pleased to see your designs and rendition coming to the table for us to play with. I wish that honor could have extended to your TIE Defender design, but I have hopes your TIE Avenger will be our TIE Avenger someday.

In case you weren't aware, some of us Armada fans are digging your renditions of the dreadnought. Mel Miniatures made it possible. We'd love to see more of your craft in that game as well!

FFG mini is based on this image:

(what I don't know is if the artist based that image in fractal's model)

Look at the darker TIE-like panels on the wings. Look at their exact silhouette. Then compare them with FractalSponge's.
Those black panels haven't appeared in any previous "official" depiction on the gunboat until his.
You can see that many other geometrical details match his model, like those boxy things protruding out from the rear part of the engines, that don't appear in any other previous model.
You can see also coincidences on panelling lines.
It's obvious: that picture from the RPG and the LCG is based on FractalSponge's model, only that they painted some extra red marks on top of the red TIE-like panels, and on the winglets.

I hope they use your version of the TIE Avenger and TIE Hunter when the time comes.  It's one of my personal favorites.

Sad we probably won't get to see your version of the Missile Boat...

Well, I agree. As clean as my Gunboat will be, Outer Rim squads just aren't and shouldn't be:

No. I'm not upset really, but I wouldn't turn down credit/pay either :)

My Avenger is one of my all-time favorite projects. I don't play this game, but I hope to see the design get used someday like the Vigil did.

I'm glad you like the dreadnaught - it was fun to mess about with it.
