thinking about F&D beta.

Recommended Posts

Think of FaD as a standalone game, though. I was thinking that FaD force using PCs wouldn't have to be Smuggler (+ force), or Ace (+ force). I agree with some earlier in this thread that suspected FaD character might have the force as their main thing.

The PCs who tack on the force to an existing Career are likely the "force sensitive" instead of full-blown "force users" (i.e. lower grade of power).

Maybe not, however. Because we have to also consider how one would play a stand-alone FaD game. Does everyone make force users, then no one can fly the ship? Do you need a ship? What are you supposed to do in that kind of stand-alone game, anyways!?

By the way, I retract my earlier comment wherein I said the FaD version of Obligation/Duty would be called "Destiny". Obviously the game already has "Destiny" points.

No idea what that mechanic will be called.

That's the thing, isn't it? Seems like "Destiny" is the perfect thing to attach to the core character mechanic. Han Solo has an Obligation, Princess Leia has a Duty, and Luke Skywalker has a Destiny.

I guess it wouldn't be too confusing, since there are "Destiny Points," but no one character has anything to do with "Destiny" or a "Destiny Score." Although I confess I'm not sure how such a thing would work :)

Is it going to be another d100 roll? How will it accrue/decrease? What will the effects be on F&D PCs?

Just as Han was the poster boy for EotE with the "he'll always be a Smuggler" line, Luke was called out as the poster boy for AoR with his "he'll always be an Ace" line. Presumably Obi-wan or even Vader might get the FaD "he'll always be an XXX" line.

What are you supposed to do in that kind of stand-alone game, anyways!?

You walk the earth, like Caine in Kung Fu.

...

I propose something like the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, in which a team of younglings are rescued from the temple by a Jedi Master and trained in secret in the Jedi Arts. While remaining hidden in the shadows, they fight injustice and seek to remind the people that there can be good in the galaxy.

Or The X Men, in which a gravely wounded Jedi master confined to a repulsor chair sets up a school for the gifted where he secretly protects and trains newly emerged force sensitives.

For those of you who were wondering, the logo for Force and Destiny looks like this:

FaD.jpg

It's on the back of the new generic "Star Wars Roleplaying Dice" packs.

:o  Its brown...... And beautiful......

It's actually just white letters against a black/starfield background that we see on the generic dice packs. The Edge of the Empire and Age of Rebellion logos are also on the back of the dice pack and they look the same. I don't have the greatest lighting to take photos, and the plastic was giving the image some glare. I apologize for the false hope, we still don't know the final color of the Force and Destiny books.

Something that no-one has considered that has precedent with FFG...The way they handled the WH40K line.

All the games are compatible but they operate on different power levels. For example if someone plays a space marine and someone else plays a character from dark heresy he would get several thousand XP to bring his character in line with said  spacemarine. If your not familiar with the system the abilities are more expensive so that would equate to prob 300-500 Xp in starwars. The teaser implies that the players are basically heroic legends, so even if the games are fully compatible the starting power level may be vastly higher in FaD. This may also be why they chose to do it last, so characters from the other games had a chance to work up to that level, and they might just state that if your character doesn't have X number of XP then give them the difference if they're mixed into a FaD game....just a thought, but it has been done before.

It's been considered. Personally I don't think they'll go down that route as they seem to be making more of an effort at compatibility than the 40K line, but has been discussed in previous threads.

FFG have said time and time and time again that they wanted to avoid the 40K line debacle and have all of the game lines compatible and relatively balanced.

Yes, F&D will doubtlessly have some power-creep.  A character who can hurl around ATATs with his mind is by definition likely to be more powerful than the ace pilot or glib diplomat.  And in many other games, Jedi have been ludicrously overpowered.

BUT, they have stressed they want balance, they left F&D until last for a reason, and I have faith that they will at least try to make a 500 XP force-user the equivalent of a 500 XP bounty hunter.

The WH40K RPG setup was something that was largely forced upon FFG, and not fully within their control. They were required to stick with a system that best fit the scrubs of the setting and force it work with vastly more competent or powerful character types that it was never meant to work with.

In contrast, they've designed the Star Wars RPG system from the ground-up with the full intent that all three core rulebooks will "play nice" with one another.

Yeah 40k lore makes the EU look like classic literature. If they didn't make Space Marines operate on an entirely different level than everyone else, there would be warp to pay.

By comparison force usage in the films is largely a gimmick, with only the Yoda/emperor fight being really amazing (and even then not that amazing). Its not till you the EU (which is now legends) that you start seeing the force being used for everything. Without the tether of the EU as strong as it was FFG is actually better off when it comes to keeping the force from getting out of hand.

Eh, while I think they did jettison most of the high high end from "official" canon, I think that what they left (especially the Prequel Trilogy and the Clone Wars cartoon) definitely leaves a lot of stuff that is pretty far up there.

Not really, the EU had an issue with the Jedi using the force for everything all the time. You may have feelings about tossing an AT-AT aside, but I'll take that any day over walking through walls, traveling through time, or any number of other silly things the EU has had happen.
