Just a slight derail: I wonder, with the new canon status, we will see a more gender equal and less speciest empire?

And here's a pic from the wotc rpg, that happens to be my favourite piece of art from that game... I just wish I could find a hi-res version.

The top two are wearing Atlantic Signal headsets and PTTs, so that makes them uber cool in my book!

But, I'm a little biased since I know the director of operations / co-owner of Atlantic Signal by first name and wear the same gear. :D

Is it just me or do Rebel Commando outfits look closer to what is seen today then what was being worn in the 80's when RoJ was released?

Maybe. I think camouflage patterns tend to look a lot more "washed out" than they used to, and hence more closely resemble the faded garments the rebels wear.

Then you have lightweight helmets, favored by special forces operators.

Also, M16s are way cooler than they used to be. So the rebels A280 blaster rifles stock has probably risen as well.

Anyway, as a hated representative of the patriarchy, if I was tasked to add some girls to the rebel forces for the variety, I would be looking at stuff like

for inspiration. But I dunno. I am a hated member of the patriarchy. Is that the sort of thing people are looking for? I mean, I like them, but I'm a dude, yknow? Anyone got any better ideas?

It's called A-TACS, and yes, modern military camouflage is only just now catching up to what the Rebels were wearing on Endor in 1983.

The only issue I have with comparing star wars to real world stuff is how "cluttered" modern outfits are. Star Wars, to me, is represented by a less is more visual aesthetic. While modern gear, much of the visual 'greebles', to use a lego term, are necessary the clothing/personal gear in the films is minimal. The nature of weapons in the star wars universe helps with this, in that no one ever reloads in the movies, so we don't see characters carrying half a dozen magazines of ammo.

I like my greebles, so I would tend to ascribe that to being a costuming limitation instead of a design choice. As in, I'd say the only reason everyone isn't as loaded as the stormtroopers on Tatooine is because the costume department couldn't afford it.

And reloading is cool. Everyone in movies should reload as often as possible.

More girls with guns!

I'm sorta trying to pick ones I think are idealized but not overly exploitative. Does that make sense? Are my selections good?

While cost for the prop dept. May have had a factor, the prequel clones were heavy on the CGI on many scenes.

I still prefer the minimalistic aproach. Also... you wouldn't have to reload if you were a better shot. :P

Ah well. The prequels sucked donkey **** and a lack of greebles is one of many reasons why! :0)

The clone wars tendency to line up and shoot at each other while standing in the open (Napoleonic style) instead of diving for cover and laying down suppressive fire and whatnot (World War II style) is definitely something I would "fix", given the option.

And adding webbing is just the start of getting back to the Empty Battlefield.

I would doubt it to a degree. The Empire is heavily inspired by Nazi Germany's supremacist ideals. Translated into space opera, there's less reason for many worlds to discriminate on humans based on the (arbitrary) color of their skin versus holding the whole human race to be superior to others (after all it was human clones who victoriously prosecuted the Clone Wars!)

While I prefer long hair on my women...where are these armed women strutting around that they are still wearing long locks? Doesn't our (US) military require close-cropped hair in both training and the field?

I think not!

Indeed, the new body armor created for female soldiers has a notch in the collar to accommodate the Tactical Ponytail*.

new-body-armor-women-military.jpg

1. A notch in the back collar of the vest can accommodate a woman’s ponytail or bun, keeping her helmet securely in place.

2. Narrowed shoulders and armholes allow a better range of motion.

3. Darting that’s built into several sections of the vest provides a snugger fit.

4. Two inches were removed from the waistline of the vest. The new version is slightly shorter as well, making the “turtling” issues and hip bruises less likely.

5. The waistline, built for the female form, has fewer Kevlar plates and weighs 25 pounds—five pounds lighter than the original model.

I think the sexism will either be gone or greatly reduced. I believe Lucas said somewhere that there were always women in the Imperial military, including stormtroopers, we just never saw them on screen in the films.

Speceism depends on how much the Empire has changed in the gap between Return of the Jedi and Episode VII.

Could you point me in the vicinity of when/where he said such? I've never heard this before.

Nope, as long as it was up neat and tight.  In fact getting a manish style cut was actually out of regs as well.

Rubber bands around the pistol grips for better grip, cheaper than buying an expensive add on grip.

...and those on the expandable stocks in the top pic are for holding things in place. Note the chem light on the one on the left.

Probably that or to keep things from rattling.

I've got zip ties and 550 cord in several places on my raid vest.

But the Rebel rifle isn't based on the M16, but the STG44. That is a goddam Nazi rifle (with bits stuck on) that the good guys are using. I actually think the fact that almost all the weapons were real weapons with some modifications made them much better looking than the duff we got from the prequel films. It helped with the ergonomics for one (as they were based around real weapons people actually had to be able to fire), and it helped with the "whole lived in" feel the original films had.

The same actually goes for the Rebel Camo stuff... the thing it primarily reminded me of is WW2 era German camoflage and the British Denison Smock.
