Like most of my ships, just doing the engines. It's still weird to me that they all come with no color there, as if they were just parked.

I added a wide red strip down the flanks of mine plus red nose, tail and aux engine fairings and the name "Thon's Orchard" in white Aurebesh on each side.  Also did sever subtle tints to the various hull plates to make it look like it has seen rough service and been put back together more than a few times, darkened the panel lines, gave it a wash and dry brushed to pick up the surface details, then painted a few of the small details. (piping, engine exhaust, a few lights, cargo container lights and labels).

 

Overall, I'm happy with the way she looks.  I will post pics when I figure out how to do that.

Seems like no matter how careful I am I can never get the engine glow highlights to work. Tried using a small brush with most of the white blotted off and get splotchy mess. Fine white line doesn't look all that good either. Just sticking with a straight blue color I guess. If someone has a pro tip here I'd love to hear it!

Watered down paint. Water down the paint till it's almost just water. You then put very thin layers on starting larger and making smaller and smaller strokes. What's good about this is that you can instantly see the effects as you build the layers up. At first it will not look like much but will eventually you will see it working. Normally after laying a layer I will dry it by blowing on it. This is how a lot of blend painting is done. Lots of very very thin paint layered on each other in ever decreasing strokes. If I can find a video I will post what I am talking about.

Basic engine glow for dummies:

Find a gray that closely matches the color of the nozzle.

Add a medium [blue, red, orange] to the gray roughly 50/50 depending on the brightness, paint that in the nozzle

Paint a small amount of the [blue, red, orange] inside the middle of the nozzle, be careful!

Paint a small amount of the [blue, red, orange] around the very inner edge (not outside!) of the nozzle

Either add a small amount of white to the [blue, red, orange] or use a premade lighter hue, paint that sparingly around the rim

When you're really comfortable with this technique you can start messing with layers, meaning you start with that 50/50 gray/color mix and slowly add more of the glow color in successive layers towards the inner part of the engine nozzle. The final highlight around the rim should be done sparingly. When I finish my guys and make another Photobucket account I'll make a thread about it.

That's sort of the idea but he did some blending. You can pull it off on tiny engines like an Xwing or Bwing with just 3 layers if you're careful. If you screw it up, just water down some gray, paint it in there and let it dry to start over.

The other way if it's easier (just harder to wrap my head around) is start with pure glow color inside the nozzle and successively add gray to the mix working your way out. You simply push the brush tip less with each layer, I've never done this but people have. The engine will glow brightest in the very bottom part of the nozzle cone, I like adding a small glow to the very rim if you're imagining a jet of ionized particles flying out.

Search for "Battlefleet Gothic" in Google for lots of images of well painted ships. That's the space fleet game Games Workshop made in its Warhammer 40k universe, the largest community of miniature painters on the Internet. There are some fantastic navies out there where you can see how they added bridge glow and such.

It's too bad I didn't keep images of my BFG navy before I stripped them to repaint, I did orange engine glows because my primary colors were dark green for my Dark Angels and blue for my Imperial Navy. You want a color that pops off the primary color of the ship.

You're right. I hadn't thought about the shape of the ship.

 

Of course, you could always paint it a tan color, and it would look like a sub (or hoagie, or grinder, depending on where you live).

I think I may put a big imp symbol right dead center of the top nose area and weather it and peel it enough to be a shell of its former glory and drop sone aurabesh on the sides for an old company or name.. I think that would look cool and definately let it be known it was a prize ship.. lol

I may run a stripe down the length of the ship just off center with a couple of diagonals going off the one side then sponge on the body color to make them appear to peel.

That gave me the idea of parallel red and blue stripes, off-center to the right, with the number 53 on the front and sides.

Here is my work in progress of turning the GR-75 into Ice Squadron's chosen method of transportation:

 

1: Paint all the dark gray areas Ice Blue.

 

 

2: Paint some of the plating white and drybrush white across the model.

 

 

3. Apply several layers of thinned down wash

 

 

 

I also painted the engineglow but failed to include it in any of the pictures....

I think the key for the rebel transport is to paint it like a UPS (or IPS possibly) vessel is to look at the UPS aircraft
