Preset map vs hex random map

7 posts in this topic

Happy Tuesday every 1.

Has there been any hope/discussion to establish a preset map as oppose to random draw hex map ?

I mean i like the random placing of hexes but most of my gaming group have great desire for pre set map which will generate some history for the game

if the map is the same, you will name certain area`s and each time you play the game there maybe battles and events that you can relate back to history of the game.

If the 4 factions (or 6 if they ever produce the Orcs and dwarves  ) you would have same neighbours having old rivals.

The hex system, right from the start some players are at disadvantage due to position of the

impassible borders.

A second expansion with new factions, more cards, more hex, more hero`s (from Dungeon Quest  ) and perhaps a rolled up poster of a preset map as an option for those who want to play the game with some historical elements and give names to the territories would be so cool.

It would save on setup time anyways but it would not upset those who prefer the hex  ;)

Thx 4 reading this

I do not mind the random setup- every player has a chance to shape the board, and who gets to place first is just up to chance.  In fact, it's one of the things that adds replayability and complexity to runewars- every single game is different. Your starting position is key in determining a strategy- if there were preset locations, your strategy risks becoming formulaic. However, if you've got a hex design that you prefer, just make one and use it. However, you'd need to scale the "preset" map with the number of players- a map big enough for 4 players is much too big for just 2.

I like to use the larger tiles- 10, 8, and 5, when possible- sometimes we'll make sure they get dealt out instead of the smaller tiles, but still set up randomly.

Here is a link to a preset map from a Realms of Terrinoth event years ago.

I used this to introduce the game to 3 other family members. It is a bit larger than the board would normally be for four players, but we had a lot of fun and still had a good amount of battling.

I'd like a scenario book of preset maps, with alternative starting points.

So it would show the home realms so you could start as normal, and it would show the placement of units so you could start at the end of year one.

Then if I'm short on time I could set up before the other players arrive, or skip the first year entirely if I'm really pushed for time.

I can't speak to the legal issues involved in such an effort, but if you had images of each of the tiles, it would be a fairly simple matter to input them into a program where you could rotate the images to various orientations and create a set of maps that you enjoy. You could, if you so desired, save these map images for yourself and/or add descriptions for them. Additionally, you could just set up your board in different arrangements and take pictures of it for use later- you could set your own "standard" two player map, or a three player map with resources concentrated in a certain area- you could even go so far as to have scenarios with different numbers of dragon runes in key locations around the map.

I guess my point is that just because there isn't an official "book of Runewars maps" doesn't mean you can't generate one for yourself.
