Any TI players tried out the Battlestar Galactica game?

I enjoy it greatly. Twilight Imperium is more about solid tactical choices and good strategy, whereas the Battlestar Board Game is about keen observation, suspicion and distrust. It certainly adds a remarkable human element to a considerably enjoyable set of game mechanics.

And, of course, high quality FFG pieces.

It's a brilliant game. Different from TI of course, but in a very good way. The suspicion and distrust is a lot of fun. One friendly warning, playing a lot of battlestar galactica can make you both a good liar and a good lie detector. :D It naturally does wonders for your poker face.

I have enjoyed the few times I have played it so far.  It is one of the next games I plan on picking up for my own collection.  I have never seen the show but the game is great.

I have to say that BSG is the most addictive game FFG has ever produced...

The moment a game ends we roll again to see who gets who in the next game.

I suggest that you play Twilight Imperium, and after each planet capture, play a game of Battlestar Galactica to see what happens to the escaping survivors of that planet. gran_risa.gif Because a REAL boardgame should take at LEAST three days!

I havnt played battlestar but I was very interested in getting it and after talking to a few people they mentioned that after a few games of it you sort of get an idea of one stratagy is always the best ...( where as in a game of twilight if you do the same thing every game you wont be winning all the time :P) I opted to buy shadows over camelott which is very similar to battlestar from what Ive heard and its a kick*** game :) but ive never played BG thats just what a bunch of people told me ... its not an FFG game though so you dont get the amazing quality pieces :( I definetly want to try this game though so tell us what you think after you play!

I've played both.

They do share a similar mechanic: players undertake "mini-games" to advance the team's overall goal, and someone may be a traitor. However, my gripe with Shadows Over Camelot is that it's too disconnected - the players in one area don't really have significant ways of influencing events in other areas, whereas in BSG my geeky President (Gaius Baltar! WOO!) can completely alter the course of a space combat by giving bonuses to the pilots involved. And, of course, at the end of a player's turn, everyone is allowed to contribute to defeating the Crisis that comes up.

In Shadows Over Camelot, too often it feels like my guy is off doing his own thing, and while it's nice for everyone if he succeeds, there's not much they can do either way.

That would become boring after the third takeover ;)

I love TI3 and I love BSG (series and boardgame) although I always found more people to play the second than the first ! (time, complexity and all). (oh and I hate Camelot which sucks, but thats purely personnal !) TI3 is a great strategy game, BSG is a great relations game ! FFG is like pokemon, its "buy 'em all !"

 I'm not that fond of BSG anymore. After the initial hype, I realized that the best way to play Cylon is to reveal the first chance you get and keep doing as much damage as you can.

The game is fun and entertaining for the first few plays, but as you get to figure out the mechanics, it loses appeal.... Unlike TI3.

That's probably effective, but not that much fun. I think BSG is a roleplayers' board game in that more than to win, the best goal is to make drama.

TI is different in the way that I always play to win. Even still, it's the dynamics of the game rather than winning that brings me back to it over and over again.

My group loves bsg,   and I really dont think that a turn 1 cylon reveal is that good of an idea. 

 

While,  with the Cylon Fleet and Caprica locations,  you probably *could* do more damage to the humans both in military terms and via crisis,   you would greatly increase the human ability to deal with your threats.  Almost all characters draw green cards,  which means they all have fairly easy acess to Executive Order cards.   The only thing that keeps humans from spamming these cards all over the place is the fear that they might use one on a Cylon.    Early reveal of a cylon really frees them up to use that card.

Tannhauser is a fantastic game, and I love the backplot as well, but it's really a 2 player game.  The game claims it can support more, but in my experience it doesn't work out that well with more than 2.  Just something for you to consider if it's down to BSG or Tann.  I don't know how many players you have in your regular group, but I know Tannhauser is woefully underplayed in our group simply because it doesn't work so well with the number of people we usually have.
