Props

Recommended Posts

Love the idea of gambling in Star Wars, after all, it is how Han got the Falcon.  So next session I am using some poker chips with the gambling rules listed by Cool in the CRB.  I also have a BattleStar Galactica Triad deck, for obviously, Triad Poker, with some house rules to ........stack the deck.........

Curious the kinds of props and ideas others have successfully incorporated into their games.

Beside dice, nourishment, e-cigarettes (and some proper old school cigarettes occasionally), alcoholic beverages and caffeinated brew, not much. Of course I have handouts from time to time, messages and clues, this is usually colour printed and more or less well designed "datapads".

I like to use props in my games as much as I can. I haven't used to many lately though. I need to change that. I do use poker chips when we do a little gambling. We usually play dice poker. It is pretty quick, and fun. And it can take the players for some quick cash. ;)

I have really been wanting to come up with an electric timer that you can cut the wires on to defuse the "bomb". I would like to have about 10 to 15 different colored wires, then if they make a good check, I can eliminate some of the wires for them.

I also do some papercrafting, I have made some holocrons to use in games before.

I do my best to have some sort of prop/handout for every session. If only because I enjoy the "ooo" factor, and the act of rewarding a good decision with a pretty graphic or some such.

Since I'm a web developer, they tend to be something I can show on a screen, or print out. But I've done things like semi-functional mock-ups of a computer scanning system, when encountering an unexplored planet; datapads entries on a tablet that we pass around; and things like planet sheets that match the core book, but for more remote planets, when a player passes a knowledge check for the corresponding planet.

Also maps. So many maps.

That's kind of an awesome idea. I'd probably make something like this as a web app and put it on a tablet. Make them huddle around it and sweat.

Also, I need to borrow the holocron idea. I just showed them an image I made of their current "strange relic" *cough* holocron *cough*.

That could work, I spose.

I like to go overboard, so I'd probably prefer one that took inputs of successes and failures to give hints and remove some wires from the possibility. Maybe a phone a friend option...

I love props.  Pictures, maps, objects to look over, anything to help immersion in the game.  I made numerous paper dungeons for miniatures as well as handouts like old pirate maps and such during my tenture as a DnD DM.

I'm not a big fan of puzzle props or player gambling stuff though.  I do my best to seperate player knowledge from character knowledge.  Unless he has the knowledge skills, background, or makes the rolls my character shouldn't know anything about something just because I know it.  On the flip side, my character knows way more about a lot of things that I don't.  So I don't like my character being hindered by my lack of knowledge/skill.  If my character was really smart but the "puzzle lock" required me solving a rubicks cube, well, maybe we'll have it open by the next session in two weeks if I can take it with me and google how to do it.  My group does like to do the dice poker thing, but I opt out as a character because my skills are not my characters skills. I have no problem filling in for an NPC to help make things fun though.  It's just a personal preference.

My thoughts on gambling will be to run the rules in the CRB like a dice game with them simply rolling competitively against the dealer.  Their higher Cool skills should allow them to do decent at that.

For cards I have some Battlestar Galactica Triad cards I'm going to run as a 3 card poker type game.  They will also roll their Cool/Skulduggery/Deception checks in conjunction as a roleplaying function that will add to their 'skills' at gambling and should weigh the game in their favor without it just being a money give away.

Here is a papercraft Holocron I built a while back. I used one in my games a longtime ago, and it was pretty cool. Now it is just a shelf ornament.

That's pretty much the coolest thing I've seen today.

Fellow web developer here: I do believe you have given me some ideas. Good on you, sir.

Something simple to create more immersion, I like it.  Miniatures are obvious although not all go for that, I don't myself but they can be fun.  I use music.  Love the crawl generator to recap last session and preview the next. Simple stuff.

Casino night on Centerpoint Station was a big hit.  I came up with a way to tilt the favor towards the players but was still able to score a couple heartbreaker losses on them at the tables as well.  Triad cards were fun, straightforward shootout with dueling Cool checks was fun and very profitable for them.  A little cantina music via the magic of the internet, some Whyren's Reserve (aka Russell's Reserve 10 year small batch), Showdown Casino chips, good stuff.  Lots of kudos from the players.

Print these on transparency and they would look even more awesome. :)

We use a lot of props.  Terrain, maps and minis mostly.  I made our repulsor lift cargo truck out of Legos and will be making our speeder bikes too at some point.  We love that stuff.  We know that the game is more set up for theater of the mind, but we just love our toys.  :P

Lots of Holocrons.  Kind of made me think I want to see if I can't come up with something to use one as a kind of dais, or pedestal or what have you, to put the Destiny Tokens on during the session.
