Next Expansion?

I wouldn't consider the Highlander a Wardancer by any means...different races and totally different background.

I agree. I had an old note about this and just had a second look. I do not know where I got this from.

Because the charge ability of the 2nd and 4th Edition Highlander is the same as the charge ability of the 3rd Edition Wardancer.

OK, so does anyone think the next expansion will NOT be a 4th corner?  There are obviously a lot of loopholes and missing streamlines to this game.  The fact the firelands is such a good expansion with a totally different feel than others is obvious I believe....and it was also designed by a new designer.....  Do you think this designer if he is put in charge of the next expansion will want to tie the game together better, maybe nerf some of the uber-game changers and make the game more dynamic and balanced?

Balance is something I have never really cared for in Talisman(unless I have been on the short-end of the stick playing this game like the last 10 times I have played it.)  I have rifled through about 3 characters per game in the last many games....I actually died the last time by my 3rd turn...and on my 4th turn with my second character....then I said eff it and heckled the rest of the players while I drank wine.

I would believe if they release a 4th corner the game is pretty much done as far as expansions go....if the board is complete and symmetrical not as many people will have interest in purchasing future expansions.  So if they want to prolong the game it would probably be intelligent to NOT release the 4th corner yet...string us along with some great additions to the game before releasing the 4th corner.....and then release Talisman 5th edition with streamlined Relic rules.  :-)

Well, when the Dragons expansion came out, I seem to recall that most of us were expecting a corner expansion - as the previous one, Sacred Pool? was not.

they had been going small/corner/small/corner, like that.

So Dragons, though it had a board, but was not a corner board, sorta threw a wrench into what seemed to be a 'pattern'.

Then after Dragons, came Blood Moon (another small set, and btw, gave us a great new mechanic)

So after Blood Moon, did come The City.  Then there was about a whole year of nothing (previously they came - whichever one, about every 6 to 7 months, kinda sort).

So then came first the news of Firelands - a small set, and then before that was here, we got our first ever POD, The Nether Realm.

So it's anyone's guess what pattern or not, they may be following.

Quite frankly I would be glad with anything. I think PODs may be the wave of the future as they are small, so less intensive on the levels of pricing or actual 'product'.  They could be like NR, and be totally new, or they could take off in 'flights' of fancy with just about anything - refer to some of my previous posts for ideas about a "Hidden Valley" POD, for example.

I think a while back, one of our non-English (as a first language) speaking players suggested that a hint was given to him by the people who produce the foreign language sets, that the final corner board would have a big surprize or two.

so for those who care, that could mean, NOT a Forest!   But who really know?

I don't think it will matter a bit, what order they produce expansions, people will buy them nevertheless. Those who don't buy will already have their reasons.

I agree, of course, but for folks like me, well, we do want to figure out when things are happening.  By the 'pattern' I show, more or less, most of us thought we'd be a lot closer to the 4th corner - - but it isn't neccessarily so and people like me are intrigued with when and what may happen along the way (but, agree, we'll still buy whatever does come our way)

I think it would be interesting to have a board that covered the middle and inner regions. The crown could be on a mysterious island - representing the new inner region, with the middle region being a sea zone with various spaces to travel on, once you have found some type of boat or ship item from the outer region... You need to brave the dangerous seas to reach the forbidding island, then make your way to the center to claim the crown!

As long as they give us the last corner before discontinuing the game I will be happy. I cannot stand seeing an open corner on my table.

The sooner the final corner comes out, the sooner I'll have to get a bigger table or fabricate a larger playing area. So I don't mind waiting... at least till the end of the year.

My friend bought a huge kitchen table, he's single and a gamer, there's plenty of room, but for most of us, 2 is gonna have to work. I already bought 2 folding tables at Sam's club for $100. I am glad I did.

Have 2 tables pushed together to form a 6ft x 5ft playing area. Both tables have been covered with black self adhesive felt. Works brilliantly!!!

I think the expansion after the next corner should be a "travel-sized boards expansion".  Package all the boards in a box with scaled down sizes.

I actually already had one of the tables that DomaGB is talking about from Sam's Club but I think I got mine somewhere else a few years ago.  That is the table we use for all the character cards, playing spaces and extra supplies since everything will not fit on my round table.  My table is fairly large too, we comfortably seat 8 of us for dinner.....

I think that on the surface The Forest sounds a little bit boring. Particularly as fantasy worlds could offer so much more. Such as Holy Lands, Forbidden Lands, Docks/Sea, Palace, Necropolis, a Military Base, though the success of the 4th corner is probably down to the mechanic that it brings to the game.

A story element would be nice, why is the Talisman world the way that it is?

Maybe in a Palace sits the Emperor of the Talisman world, (does the world have a name? I'm not sure.) And this Emperor just so happens to be a lich. And this lich wants what all liches want, everybody to be dead and signed up to their army. So he comes up with this great idea to get everyone fighting each other. He creates the crown of command. Suddenly the peaceful people of the world are crawling over one another to get the power and make the world peaceful again. While the Emperor sits back laughing to himself as he watches his army grow, the crown has no power over him.

Maybe there is room for a co-oprative story to be introduced, with the players working together instead of against each other?

We know why the land is the way it is. The king that had the crown died.

I'd like a hex-based Forest or some other non-linear movement mechanic. With light/dark halves, abandoned cabins, faery towns, another river, connections to the Cursed Glade and even the Graveyard. Centaur, Satyr and Ranger are must-haves.

Beyond the obvious or not obvious choice for 4th corner, is, in my mind, the idea that maybe there will be 1 or more "master" expansions, that either introduce very new concepts, or new takes on other concepts, like "master" skills/characters. Some other posters have talked about similar ideas with skill sets that could be earned or learned.

But a 'master' expansion would be more like finding a way to tie in all or most expansions in a sort of final~end.game. So maybe permanant 'gates' which could be new board tokens or plastic pieces and at least one per Region (except the good old Inner Region. They could work with the Runes spaces and the Rune Gate place cards, but do not vanish or add points for enemies. Just transportation.

As I've seen sets that seem tilted in one respect or another (Dungeon=mightier enemies, City=easy money/purchases, etc.) I have come to realize that 'balance' happens, eventually. Firelands seems to balance out certain aspects, like .... too many friggin' cards, but seriously it is hard to see around what may be needed as we approach the possible end of the series.

So in my mind, future sets could be like Nether Realms, adding new things totally and being open ended enough to have a number of user-variations. So an opposite to the nether realms could be possible, The Aether Realms, with more nice things or advantages - still needs to be some friction, of course, so maybe more quest-oriented, somehow (like Warlock's Cave, I mean).

But then there could be scenario driven themes for other sets. We have a castle and a prince and princess. What about other nobles as NPCs, with their own good and bad aspects? As far as NPCs go, what other kinds might be interesting? While some might want to see a Toad King, there could be others.

As for NPC's, how about a Talisman Devourer? A creature that activates whenever a player character obtains a Talisman. It then chases him around the board until it is killed or it captures your Talisman. A bit like The Reaper or Werewolf, except it heads straight for one person and moves every turn.

I like the idea of a Devourer!

And how could I forget Dark/Light fate, since I've brought it up many times myself?

I also like the idea of the devourer.  And of course, dark/light fate which will probably be much better suited for the digital edition but I would love to see it introduced.

I have thought about having an "Evil" player in large 6+ player games that controls the Reaper and Werewolf (and the devourer possibly?).  Obviously there would have to be changes to the rules for each of these characters and their abilities.  This would also give someone obvious wanton lust for night...so I don't think they would be forgetting to change the night/day card over.  The side effect would be a possibly longer game than the already drawn out game we have.  But, then again, possibly not since people would be trying to get to the CoC quicker instead of farming Strength/Craft and items.

Something like this would be along the lines of an "Epic Talisman" adventure.  Perhaps with rules for an cooperative effort which would allow one player to control more than one Character if you wanted to set the rules for 2 players.  This would be something that could be released as a POD expansion as it would only need modified rules and perhaps some tokens or a few extra cards...but nothing substantial as a board or anything.

I'd like a hex-based Forest or some other non-linear movement mechanic.

That would be interesting but considering it would be completely different than any expansion as far as movement and design goes(as well as never being in any of the previous editions) it probably will not happen....but you never know, we have had a few surprises in 4th edition.  :-)
