Career Skills

Recommended Posts

Which Skills are considered a players career skills all ones from career obviously but for specializations is only the ones they chose for free ranks or all? What about when they purchase more specs especially outside there tree do all the ones that would be career from that spec become career as well.

So, 1st, Hello there!

2nd.

Career skills are all 8 of them, but you can get 1 free rank in just 4 of them, then you can train rest with spending XP

Specialization skills are all 4 of them, but you can get 1 free rank in just 2 of them, then you can train rest with spending XP

(Unless you are droid then you can choose more)

later on you cannot gain more Career skills, but only Specialization skills.

For example, if you are Bounty Hunter you get all his 8 skills as career skills (Bounty Hunter

Athletics, Perception, Pilot (Planet), Pilot (Space), Streetwise, Vigilance, Brawl, Ranged (Heavy))

but can choose four wich will get 1 free rank, rest are untrained but still counts as career skills

And if you choose specialization Assassin, then you get 4 specialization skills (Coordination, Skullduggery, Stealth, Melee)
Choose 2 and get 1 free rank in them, rest stays as your specialization skills.

Same is when you get another Specialization, you get its all skills as your trained skills, but dont get free ranks, you can only train them by spending XP.

Hope this helps, and i wrote everything clear.

This makes more sense if you ignore the talent tree lists and read the career entries and the specialisation sub-headings.

Although Embery has it covered here, I only want to underline that when you acquire a new specialisation you gain up to 4 new career skills from that specialisation - I write "up to" because there are sometimes overlapping skills between specs.

No, the skills of any specialization you take are "career skills" for the purposes of determining how much XP you need to advance them. If you start off as an Explorer/Scout, you get all 11 skills as career skills (11, because there is overlap in Survival). Later if you pick up the Assassin specialization, you get Melee, Ranged (Heavy), Skulduggery, and Stealth as career skills.

Whafrog, I believe Embery was using the word career to define itself ie. Colonist, BH, etc.  and Specialization to define itself as well.  ie. Doctor, Outlaw Tech, etc.  You are both on the same page.

Ta-Dah!!  We are an awesome community of people.  Look at us, all helpful and whatnot.  I have so much fun checking these boards...

The wording can be a little tricky.

But if you notice, on the Talent tree page for each Specialization, there is a list of "Career Skills" and a list of "Bonus Career Skills".

When you take that Specialization, regardless of your Career, you gain those four Bonus Career Skills as "Career Skills", which applies to the cost of buying them.

When you're generating your character, for your first Specialization, you may choose two of these Bonus Career Skills to receive a free rank.

But at any time, whenever you gain a new Specialization, you gain that list of Bonus Career Skills as "career skills".

I figured as much (though wasn't 100% sure), and I made it shorter than I intended (iPad, in bed, typing tedious :) ).

What I was objecting to is, there is no such definition or term in the game mechanics as "Specialization skills".  It doesn't mean anything mechanically, but including it that way makes it look like it has a special status.  Someone new to the game might spend a lot of time looking for the term "Specialization skills" and whether they are treated differently.  I only meant to clarify that the only special status a skill has is "Career Skill", and you can get them via your original career and specialization, plus any other specializations you take.

My reading of this concurs.  If you start as a Bounty Hunter Gadgeteer, then you buy Outlaw Tech as a specialization later on, you ONLY get those BONUS Career Skills as Career Skills (so the second list of skills, not the first).
