DSalazar reacted to TheHobgoblyn in Minor Clan Lore & Stats for L5R 5E
Well, I like that they chose an animal avatar for the Hantei families. And the Hantei school based on elemental dragons was fine. The Yoshun was a good idea.
But everything else just utterly falls apart because it was pretty obvious that the designers reached for a very bad concept and then tried to incorporate that into absolutely everything, literally throwing out what few traits could be attributed to the Imperial Families that don't directly come from being the ones in charge, but obviously forgetting that they would still have to be functioning as an actual clan within an actual empire where, even if there was slightly higher presence of Naga and Kitsune and Tengu, 90% of the time they would still be interacting with humans. So defining them as "dealing with non-humans" to the point that literally none of their techniques have any effect on humans at all?
Point to me any Crab Clan school whose techniques solely affect Shadowlands creatures. Do you see the Hiruma Berserker school saying their extra strength only affects Shadowlands creatures? Or the Yasuki Courtier only getting bonus on trade with Shadowlands creatures? Yet the Crab Clan is very clearly defined by dealing with Shadowlands creatures.
Imagine if the Shiba and Asako school techniques were defined solely by working on Mahotsukai. Does the fact that they don't mean Mahotsukai are not primarily a Phoenix problem?
Or if the Ide had bonus on trade exclusively on gaijin and if you were not a gaijin, they only have their base skills to fall back on? Or if the Utaku's bonus damage only worked on gaijin?
It was just such monumental bad design that words can hardly express just how badly it would fall apart under even the slightest amount of playtesting.
And it seems like there is plenty of groundwork for theming the "Hantei Children as a Great Clan", sure-- we don't know what a proper "Hantei" family would look like, but if they are the Clan's main samurai family, then a lot of what exists for the Seppun as guardians/magistrates can be shifted onto the Hantei. That leaves the Seppun open to be an astrologer/seer Shugenja family like their founder. And then you have the Otomo as a courtier family whose founder was known as being a bit off-putting, but clever enough and good enough to overcome that-- so maybe they focus on diplomacy and research. Since every other Clan is presumed to get all of their families regardless of all of history being different, fill them out with Miya, Tsi, Kasuga and Yotsu, giving them scouts/couriers, smiths, scouts and light armored samurai. Although the Tsi and Yotsu probably just fit better under the whole "vassal families" umbrella.
For overall theme, the main focus of Hantei that seems different from the others is the focus on Shinseism. An "Owl Clan" probably makes more sense for a heavily Shinseism-devoted Clan than one that is shallowly defined as "talks to non-humans." And maybe the whole "they control the smallest, but most densely populated lands" would still be a thing. So follow those out as concepts. If the whole "dealing with non-humans" ends up falling under their umbrella, so be it-- but none of their schools should be focused on that to the entire exclusion of being able to affect anyone else. But with any of the Great Clans, whenever you try to define them as "This is the Clan that does ____________", it is always so reductive that one can point out one or two of the clan's families that aren't encapsulated by that idea at all. At best there is some thematic consistency in how they dress, but within any given Clan you have a variety of families with a variety of functions.
So the idea of designing any Great Clan as "deals with nonhumans" to the point that every technique, every item, every concept has to feed into that to the exclusion of making a well-rounded clan that could stand on its own was just bad.
As for making a clan for Ryoshun....
I would probably start by putting the Badger, Falcon, Fox, Bat and Boar together as a single faction as the Badger is already confirmed as serving him and the others are all "deals with ghosts/spirits" clans. And yet, also, none of them are so solely defined by the "deals with ghosts" concept to the fact that they are utterly disarmed when dealing with humans. Of course, by the time Imperial Histories 2 came about, the Falcon had long since been claimed by the Crab and the Fox by the Mantis. (And now that I finally understand the Bat, I got to wonder why they aren't a Mantis Clan family-- I mean, I know why-- 'Batman' meme is why someone chose them to be a Minor Clan, but in-world...)

DSalazar got a reaction from Magnus Grendel in Death and Dishonor
So, it took a while without me posting but we had sessions 10 and 11.
Session 10 was our Hot Springs Episode. TVTropes may ruin your life. The warning has been given, your fate is now your own
18th of the Ox, 817
The players wake up with a summons from Bayushi Shiko, the wife of Bayushi Ogoe-ue. She shows an invitation from Hantei (née Doji) Megumi, wife of Hantei Osahito, the Crown Prince to go visit a village near Kyuden Ide that apparently has a Hot Springs and the Princess wants to invite some of the ladies of the Winter Court with her for a day of relaxation and merriment.
Shiko tells them she is of course going and that her husband had suggested that the three of them escorted her along (obviously to make sure, she wouldn't get into a cat fight with Mirumoto Kaijuko).
They will be leaving shortly so they only have time to prepare some clothes and one quick action.
Genji goes to speak to Agasha Kitsuki to confirm if Kaijuko is going or not, to which he receives a positive answer much to their chagrin. Baku gets a short walk and talk with Ogoe to confirm that the current orders remain to which he also receives a positive answer. Shina prepares a poison that could cause cramps and stomachache if ingested just as a secondary plan to keep either Kaijuko or Shiko away from the events at the Hot Springs. The snow had stopped in the last few days so the travel wasn't so bad and they received Unicorn horses for the ride as well. During the travel they could see some familiar faces riding along like Mirumoto Kaijuko, Agasha Mei-lin and Hida Makoto, Moto Chabi and Shinjo Koshamon. It took them 4 hours to reach the village by horse.
I took inspiration for the village from Twin Blessings Village where the Hot Springs is just the sleeping place of powerful Fire Kami. It is not Twin Blessings Village though. One difference, for instance, this kami enjoys ashes instead of saké.
They stay accommodated at the small temple where the residing monk (a retired Kitsu) oversees the Hot Springs and the characters notice how hard the Seppun and Otomo worked hard and in such a short notice to provide the minimum acceptable comfort for a Hantei to sleep in such a spartan place. The hot springs and temple are located atop of a hill overseeing the village with some smaller pools (with less warmer water) forming down the hill. The princess and the rest of the ladies will have the main spring for themselves while Genji and Baku can enjoy the secondary springs with whatever male Seppun not on immediate duty (which would probably be none).
While undressing to bathe in the spring, Shina (who has Dangerous Allure) notices that Shiko looks at her with jealousy. The players screaming "now everything makes sense" was hilarious (because Mirumoto Kaijuko ALSO has Dangerous Allure). With this new information, Shina decides that instead poisoning Shiko, Kaijuko or both, she will try to bring the attention of Hantei Megumi to herself and thus become the target of Shiko's jealousy. Before they bathe, they are informed by a Seppun of the Hidden Guard that before taking a bath, one should throw ashes into the water as an offering to the kami. They do so and start enjoying the relaxing bath. Hida Makoto joins for the bath and Shina sees that she has a deep Sagat-like scar across her chest that she didn't try to hide but actually seemed to carry it with pride.
Shiko was having a pleasant conversation with Megumi when Kaijuko arrived, Shina took this opportunity to roll Performance and her newly acquired Fire 4 to get the attention of everyone at the bath, specially Megumi and become the center of attention. She succeeded handily and acquired the temporary animosity of Shiko.
Meanwhile, Baku and Genji, with nothing better to do, went to one of the secondary springs where they found Mako, the monk in charge of the temple taking a bath there already. He invited them into the water, and showed them a small bag with ashes for them to throw as offering. They noticed that the spring was a Hallowed Ground for Fire and Water. They talked with Mako, found out about his past, they were glad he didn't know who they were and their recent dealings with the Lion and Mako even pointed how he noticed no Lion lady came with the Princess and he asked them if they knew anything about the Lion being in disgrace with the Imperial Family, to which they lied by omission as best as they could.
Just before dinner time, Kochamon convinced the Princess of letting Moto Chabi prepare a typical Unicorn travelling dinner (i.e. a spit roast barbecue) and because Megumi has a passion for Travel, she would very much enjoy novelty food. Unfortunately for Chabi, her roll Survival/Fire roll was zero successes and 3 kept opportunities to which I decided that she lost her hands with the spices, causing the food to be so spicy causing flatulence (and 3 Strife) ON EVERYONE. She definitely lost a lot of Glory because of that, but that also worked for the players as nobody wanted to fart in front of the Princess nor the Princess wanted to fart in front of anyone, causing everybody to spend the COLD, CLOUDLESS, WINTER night contemplating the stars by themselves.
19th of the Ox, 817
When they finally went to sleep, Genji and Baku wake up in the middle of the night, hearing someone call their names. from outside the temple. They go investigate and first thing they notice is that it's snowy but it is not cold and they see a huge salamander shaped creature made of water and eyes of fire talking to an old lady enjoying the hot spring. They approach with caution and the lady and the spirit stop their conversation to look at them. They lady grabs Genji by his cheeks and tells him that she is glad her granddaughter was feeding him nicely. She finally presents herself as Soshi Kaede and she is the Spiritual Protector of Genji. She comes with a warning and a request.
The warning is that Yogo Ja-Yoon, the ghost that haunts Baku is trying to gather strength and the request is that Genji find her secret lab (a lost family heirloom with the keywords Hallowed and Obscured) where she had notes that could help on banishing Gaki-do spirits.
They wake up at the same time in the middle of the night, this time for real and spend the rest of the night outside, excited with the conversation they just had and how Baku can finally get rid of this shameful secret.
Shina wakes up in the morning and notices Baku and Genji left way early and probably didn't sleep at all. She dresses herself and is waiting for Shiko to wake up. Shina is kind of pissed with Shiko trying to pursue this (in her view) petty rivalry and tries to obtain information on how all of this started. She uses Fire/Command to pointedly demand an explanation and she fails. Shiko is obviously pissed with Shina for "not knowing her place" and finds out that Ogoe had actually ordered them to hinder her plans, which left her pissed with them AND WITH HER HUSBAND. Genji and Baku return in time, with the happiest face and notice the mood of the room and stay quiet.
They go back to Kyuden Ide where Shiko and Ogoe are about to have a conversation Ogoe didn't want at all.
That's it for session 10. I'll try to post session 11 tomorrow.

Goriate's player wasn't about for the latter half of the evening (so standard group rules of him following someone about doing 'assist' actions if relevant applied), so we'll have to wait and see.
He did message later "What went wrong after I left?" and was told:
"Uiri ended up in a duel, Reju Jikai's wife is a shinseist zealot who's spending her days high on narcotic incense, someone's stealing the castle's weapons, there may or may not be shinobi in the castle roof, everyone seems to be plotting against the daimyo, you, or both, and you're witnessing a seppuku tomorrow morning."
"I'm sorry I asked."

In the end, Tsugumasa didn't end up being that unreasonable. The three magistrates managed to persuade him that the village wouldn't be able to pay the tax demands in full, through no fault of their own - citing the floods which were now under control, they managed to persuade him to give the village more time. During the discussion, they did note his reference to the 'village ledger' - something they had not seen in either visit to Twin Blessings Village, and which they (correctly) suspected Setsuo was hiding. With that, the PCs, Tsugumasa, his guards and their prisoners set off for the castle. The journey was a lot slower, since Rin and Genzo were on foot, and the unstable weather left Uiri and Suiren exhausted. By the time the group neared Closed Shell Castle, it was getting on for late afternoon. The journey was interrupted as the PCs passed a copse of trees just short of the castle hill by Michi, who'd been meditating under a tree and chose to join the PCs on the way back to Closed Shell. He sounded both unsurprised and unimpressed by the accusations against Rin, but was otherwise pleased to see the PCs again. They wisely decided not to raise the issue of the peasants' weapons (given Tsugumasa was within earshot), instead settling for a brief history of Closed Shell - particularly its recent history, where it had changed from a largely abandoned Otomo holding manned by a skeleton staff to one ceded to the Otomo's Reju family vassals, in the person of Reju Jikai, the new daimyo. Apparently the handover had been far from completely seamless or amicable, and Jikai's retainers - especially his 'army' - were now an odd three-way mix of Otomo servants and ashigaru retained from the caretaker staff by Otomo Nobu, his castellan, Reju family bushi like Tsugumasa and his guards, and ronin quickly hired from the city of Hirosaka to bulk out the numbers, with - as Michi put it - "perhaps less attention paid to their ethics than their affordability and availability".
Closed Shell Castle proved pretty impressive - even for Goriate. At the same time, it was a slightly comical - maybe even tragic - idea that Twin Blessings Village justified such an immense fortification to protect it; a result from the supposed paranoia of the original Otomo daimyo of the fortress. With both Tsugumasa and Michi in their company, as well as their Emerald Magistrate's papers of office, gaining access to the castle was a trivial activity, and the PCs were quickly and politely conveyed to an audience chamber to wait on Reju Jikai assembling his court. Rin and Genzo were taken to a holding room. Horonigai was very unhappy to let them - Rin especially - out of her sight, but ultimately Uiri and Suiren persuaded her that it was Tsugumasa's jurisdiction and insisting on accompanying them would do nothing but send a message of distrust. The PCs - specifically (unsurprisingly) Suiren - did find the spyhole in the audience chamber, but it was unmanned. They weren't kept waiting too long, and soon they, and Rin and Genzo, were shown in to Jikai's audience chamber. As they came in, they noted Otomo Nobu whispering with Jikai's taisa in a conspiratorial fashion. "Oh no. You mean the daimyo's 'Grand Vizier' who comes from a family of infamous schemers might be plotting something? Oh Shock. Oh Horror." - Uiri's player. They also noticed Mamoru Nakama, who they have (as I thought they might) assumed is Haru. Horonigai was slightly puzzled that he seemed to be giving her, in particular, a very intense stare. Rin and Genzo were not bound, but did pointedly have a Reju bushi stood on either side of them in a non-too-subtle indication that they were still prisoners. The debate ultimately boiled down to Uiri, who laid out the charges on behalf of the PCs, versus Nobu, who was arguing that Jikai had every right to order what had happened done, with collateral damage being an unhappy tragedy - Rin had no reason to expect a high-ranking samurai to be staying at an illegal waystation. "She had no reason not to check, either." As a courtier, Nobu was detectably the more persuasive of the two, but Uiri was able to keep pace for two rounds by using You Taught Me This to draw assistance from Goriate's experience. He was loaded with strife - his anxiety being triggered didn't help - but that did also grant him a void point which also aided him in keeping pace with the Otomo castellan. After two rounds, though, he chose to 'tag in' the magistrates' "adviser" - the far more capable Suiren, who swiftly won the intrigue against Nobu. Nobu looked unhappy, but ultimately couldn't argue with Jikai's decision. The Reju daimyo looked rather horrified - he'd instructed that the waystop be closed, forcibly if need be, as it was illegal, unlicensed and untaxed, but he'd given no orders to kill its proprietor, let alone any guests. The two ronin had exceeded their orders in a brutal fashion and needed to be punished. The PCs did intercede here on Genzo's behalf. He'd been against Rin's actions, but he'd followed the commands of the senior samurai - and besides, being blinded, they argued, he'd already suffered a pretty severe punishment for his actions. Jikai agreed, and ordered the older ronin released, but Rin was to be given the chance to redeem herself by seppuku the following day. The two ronin were removed from the court, and Jikai then welcomed the PCs. Having been at winter court himself, he recognized them and noted each of their achievements at the court, particularly Horonigai (Uiri he also recognised but it's fair to say the Mirumoto brought back rather painful memories). He offered them the hospitality of the castle for a day or so.
With that, the court dispersed, and after they had settled into some guest rooms, they agreed a plan of action of splitting up and searching for information. Suiren went with his usual trick of going to gather rumours incognito. With plenty of ronin wandering around the castle, new faces weren't unusual, so - removing his obscuring mask and changing into travelling clothes - it was easy enough to pretend to be an off-duty guard. He spent a little time in the barracks - ironically enough, talking to the now-blind Genzo, who'd never heard him speak before so didn't recognise him. In addition to a quick who's who of names to investigate, he found out that the castle's stores of arrows had 'gone missing' a few days earlier - rendering yumi bows in the armoury useless. A trip past the kitchens revealed the fact that the servants were taking the long route to fetch water from the moat rather than the castle's own well, as apparently it was haunted. Horonigai's ears, naturally, pricked up when later told about 'supernatural whommy stuff'. He also ended up in the garden-viewing room. Apparently the garden was also cursed, in the much more mundane sense of 'all the plants have died and the gardeners can't get anything else to grow'. 'Viewing' the desolate expanse of dry earth was another of Jikai's guests, Miya Shinako. The Miya samurai was clearly distraught. Believing Suiren to be one of the castle's ronin, she asked him to investigate if the 'imperial samurai' killed by Rin at the waystop had been, as she suspected, her uncle Miya Emon. Horonigai went to the shrine to Shinsei - which she found was newly built - and encountered Seppun Azusa, the lady of the castle. She was pretty much fixated on her devotions, and whilst she exchanged some pleasantries with the Kaito, largely ignored her. Horonigai figured out - and was able to confirm with Michi, who was watching from nearby - that Azusa had, after being crippled by Daidoji Gombei at winter court, basically become fanatically religious to compensate for the loss of her previous self-identity as a swordsman. With both her husband and niece being quietly but pragmatically pious rather than especially ascetic, this was driving her further and further from her immediate family, and the isolation was steadily making what was probably clinical depression worse. As she was leaving, she saw Nakama resting in one of the more green spaces of garden in the castle. Not wanting to 'deal with' him yet, though, she ignored him. Uiri, meanwhile, went to the training courtyard. Reju Masaru, the taisa, was drilling a large block of ronin, and wasn't very approachable, but Uiri did hit it off instead with Reju Daihachi, the sensei, who was instructing a single pupil; Reju Ume, Jikai's neice and heir. Ume was busy working out some pent-up aggression on a trio of Reju family bushi, and Uiri opened the conversation with the sensei the right way by complimenting both teacher and pupil. The conversation covered many of the Reju samurai in the castle, including Jikai's yojimbo, Jinzaburo, who was probably the only individual who could be said to be in Closed Shell voluntarily. "He's in love with Ume, isn't he?" - Horonigai's player, who can see a blatantly obvious plot trope coming a mile off. This subsequently led to a discussion of the rumours of noises and movement in the roof around the family quarters, and Reju Jikai's concerns that shinobi had somehow infiltrated the castle. Suiren perked his ears up at this, and plans to investigate. Ume, it turned out, had thrown herself into her sword studies with the same focus her aunt had shown for shinseism. Having been dragged away from her friends in the capital, it was about all she had left to entertain herself with, and she still harboured hopes of somehow avenging her mother's crippling injury. She ended up talking to Mirumoto Uiri, and - duly impressed to have the kata champion from Winter Court in the castle - asked to spar. This was a duel to first stike with bokken, beginning with weapons readied, and was actually one of the closer fights Uiri has had. Reju Ume is a significantly weaker duellist than the rank 3 Mirumoto - both have Air 3, but Uiri has Martial Arts Melee 4 to Ume's Martial 2. However, Uiri was still exhausted, meaning he was hanging on to his composure by a thread after the events of the day, so couldn't really keep strife results and couldn't last more than a couple of rounds before becoming compromised. If Ume had managed to trigger Dramatic Duellist at any point, that would have been it. Plus, with bokken, his usual opening gambit of an iaijutsu strike wasn't available, and he'd already expended both uses of You Taught Me This. It ended up with both parties fighting in air stance, upping the TN required to hit to 3. As a result, both managed a successful strike in their first attacks, but neither landed a critical strike - Uiri managed to bank away an opportunity for a critical strike the following turns. Ume came close to landing a Dramatic Duellist attack, but Way of the Dragon managed to remove enough successes to prevent the strike landing. The following turn, with one "free" kept opportunity and some lucky explosive success, he was able to land a critical strike and win the duel. Ume was duly impressed. She'd been Kakita-trained, so this was her first exposure to the Mirumoto Niten style, aside from watching a demonstration in the palace where the Niten practicioner clearly had no intention of winning. Uiri realised she was talking about Agasha Sumiko's 'sparring match' with the prince, Hantei Sotorii. The two spoke for a bit, before Uiri excused himself and returned to the guest quarters. Before he left, he was sure there was something else Ume was wanting to talk to him about, but whatever it was the young noble couldn't figure out how to raise it. Horonigai, when they discussed later, hit on it: "You're fighting with two swords simultaneously. That means you've just proved you know how to fight effectively 'wrong-handed'. She's thinking you might be able to teach her aunt." We left things there for the evening - ironically with each of the three PCs having identified a job for someone else to do: Suiren would investigate the castle's roof for these rumoured shinobi. Horonigai would look into the claims the castle's well was haunted. Uiri would try to figure out how to persuade Seppun Azusa to re-learn her swordsmanship skills. -

"What's the difference?
"Well, 'under consideration' means we've lost the file; 'under active consideration' means we're trying to find it."

DSalazar reacted to Tonbo Karasu in The Yogo Curse, Part 1 - Scorpion Story Discussion
It isn't that Scorpion Lands have demon gates. The demon gates are actually reflections of Asian folklore. In China, and to a lesser extent Japan, north-east and south-west were considered unlucky directions. It's possibly luck from the original designers that the Festering Pit is to the south-west of Rokugan, but it actually plays into this bit of belief quite well.

That would go some way towards explaining the rather.... imaginative.... nature of some of the schools contained within the book.
Still, the clan itself seemed reasonably grounded enough. Just magistrates whose specialty is fighting against opponents that use poison. Compared to a clan that has spent most of its time in yume-do and fights wayward dream spirits that escape from the dream world or ones that are descended from fox spirits or bat spirits... it hardly stands out as unreasonable.

I wouldn’t hold my breath for half of these clans ever having an official presentation, so yours is as good as any. I mean, I get FFG creating their own minor clans like the Deer clan, but I mean, come on, there are loads and loads of minor clans with a dedicated fanbase that will probably never see the light of Amaterasu.
It makes me wonder what happened to FFG at the end of 2019. Path of Waves should have been published then and instead we got a 2-5 months delay. Same thing with Celestial Realms.
Releasing 3 splatbooks a year should not be that difficult and really, if you delay too much people may give up and go look for something else. We had Core Book and Emerald Empire released together in 2018 and then Shadowlands and Court of Stones in 2019 with Path of Waves promised to Q4 of 2019, instead, it was mid-Q1 2020. At the same time we had the announcement of Celestial Realms by mid-Q2, instead, it went to mid-Q3. Field of Victory was announced in early August to be expected 5-7 months later. I mean, is this because they already knew it was going to get delayed and they didn’t want to miss the mark again so the pushed the release date that far?
At least we know the Dragonfly and the Badger will see the light of Amaterasu. The rest, Togashi-kami knows when...
Anyway, I would give the Sparrow Labor, instead of Performance and I would give the Wasp survival and replace Survival with Skulduggery for the Tsuruchi.
