  1. Has anybody made a list of "off-class" cards that Jacqueline Canine can use? I know its blasphemous to think about, but I am interested ...

    I have only found a few Survivor cards, a Stray you-know-what, the General of those things and a card that gave me Deja Vu .

    I suppose it would be pushing it to include the "Louisiana Lion" huh?

    What about Shortcut? There are two shapes in the artwork that could be .... but I wonder if anyone else agrees?

    That surprises me, because for my group, Arcane Initiate is the "go-to" Mystic ally, and we even think of Arcane Initiate (3) as one of the most impactful Mystic upgrades available. But then, I have never used Olive McBride, so maybe I should give her a shot!

    If you didn't get an answer before, I believe that whether or not any investigators are at the location at the end of the round, you are forced to discard The Pit Below. Of course, if investigators are there at that time, they each take the damage.


  4. We just finished the Dream-Eaters and my wife played the Guardian tough-guy (Zoey) in the Dream Quest track, so I went to my favorite, Mystic, Father Mateo. Looking through the Mystic allies, I usually like Olive McBride with the good Padre, to give me more chances of drawing the Elder Sign. This time I noticed the Arcane Initiate, which is for me exactly the type of card Allonym was talking about when he began this thread. I had glanced at it when we started playing and thought, "no thanks" and never looked back. Not to mix metaphors, but I must apply the immortal words of Hermione Granger to myself, "What an idiot!" :)

    Anyway, I loved Arcane Initiate in this playthrough! I basically got a free action every round to draw a card (a Spell card), and since my deck was loaded with them (Spell cards), it was brilliant! I had to include Moonlight Ritual and Fortune or Fate to try to counter the doom on the 0-level Initiate, but that was a small price for what I got.

     You take no horror in that scenario. You are ignoring the Skull token, even though it was revealed.


  6. I agree with your thoughts and really enjoyed reading and thinking about the move action. My turn to ramble about it, too.

    Moving is a cost of doing the business of horror investigation. In and of itself, moving is not satisfying, as you say, so maybe that is why cards and abilities that make a move more than just a move are so cool. Ursula Downs’ ability to get a free investigation action after moving is fun, enough so that playing her involves planning how you can move each turn! Add Pathfinder to that and it feels like you are cheating. 😊 Don’t even get me started about how much I love being Elusive!

    Some of my favorite scenarios ( Dunwich Express, Eztli Temple, 1000 Shapes of Horror) involve a “race against time” to get done or out of danger by moving your butts as quickly as you can from location to location. With the functionality of doom on the agenda making it a real race. I may appreciate these scenarios more because in my Dungeons and Dragons days as a DM, I wanted to create that sense of urgency for my hapless adventurers. The agenda deck is such a fantastic mechanic!

    I am glad movement is an integral part of this game. It figures into your strategy in every game no matter what class of investigator you are playing. “If I go there, then I have two actions to ... wait, I have to play my (insert needed item asset) first ... how am I going to make this work?” So much fun!

    Pretty cool idea. I think we all follow these threads for at least two reasons; first, we love this game, and second, we like to feel we are a part of a community with common interests. The pandemic has increased my own personal need for interaction while isolated and I think it would be great to share the experience and sign the guestbook. And, to finish the campaign! 😉

     


  8. I may have mentioned herein that I favor the traditional Guardian with multiple weapons build. 🙂

    So, then I read the Silas Marsh novella and was really intrigued with him. I have played Survivors before (mostly William Yorick, though), so I am somewhat familiar with survival, if you will. But I had never built a deck so loaded with skill cards before that. Using his ability to commit a skill card, then pull it back if not needed was slick.

    And I had never really relied on events to fight. Man, was that a blast! Brute Force and Flare are particularly great with his combat ability, and Tennessee Sour Mash, smashing the bottle on the counter and using the jagged glass as a weapon, is pretty cool, too.

    It kinda surprised me, but Silas is now one of my favorite investigators.


  9. I'm not sure, but the rules for the Dream Eaters expansion does say (in the section describing the new Swarming X key word):

    "Each swarm card underneath the host enemy acts as a separate instance of that enemy for most purposes. Each swarm card has the same values and text as its host card. (For example, if an investigator is engaged with a host enemy with 2 swarm cards underneath it, that investigator is engaged with 3 enemies in total."

    I was close to being admitted to ITU on a ventilator last Monday, but x-rays showed I still had one working lung and once my vitals were stabilised I was good to go home. Paramedics wanted to take me back to hospital mid-week when wifey called them Wednesday, as I struggled for air and was apparently confused about where I was and what my own name was. I was more lucid an hour later and refused to go back to hospital as if they were to send me home again I knew I'd be too weak to get myself back.

    Guys. Seriously now. If you think for instance milk or bread are essentials and you need to go to a shop to get more - think again. Drink water from the tap and eat whatever you find in the back of an old cupboard instead. Just don't go out.

    Boys and girls. I'm not joking. Stay safe. Stay the f*ck at home.

    It's nice to see Abigail Foreman make it into the LCG - she appears in the Dream Gate (the Silas Marsh novella), where she was a particularly likeable character, as well as in the King in Yellow expansion to Arkham Horror 2e. Bit of a shame she is not useable by, and has zero synergy with, Silas Marsh, but it's pretty inevitable.

    I feel the same way. I am big Silas fan and would have liked to recreate the partnership of the novella.

    I guess I am in the minority, I love the traditional Guardian build with a .45 Automatic in one hand and a Machete in the other, Guard Dog or Beat Cop there to watch my back. Monster? Boom, you're gone. 

    That said, Cho does sound pretty interesting. I played Silas Marsh recently and using Brute Force, Flare, and Tennessee Sour Mash to fight was really fun. Cho can't use those cards, but using Guardian events to fight may be pretty cool.

    But, to answer the original question, I have to admit that I was immediately attracted to Jacqueline Fine. I seem to pull bad tokens a high enough percentage of the time to use Olive McBride whenever I can, even after proving to myself statistically that she doesn't significantly improve my chances for success. (I am such a geek.) So, Jacqueline, the Psychic, is the new investigator I am most looking forward to trying. Plus, Psych is one of my all-time favorite TV shows. 😉

    I was somewhat surprised that the announcement of the starter packs didn't also include an announcement that future cycles would NOT include new investigators. For me, not being a long-time Arkham Horror fan, I am happy with the current choices of investigators to choose from (except of course, I want Monterey Jack! 🙂 ). What I crave is more content, i.e. campaigns and scenarios to experience. 


  14. 1. The Forgotten Age is still my favorite and I can't wait to play it as Monterey Jack. I secretly like killing the serpents and making my co-player anxious about rising Vengeance, he he he. We generally get pretty banged up, but usually live to reach retirement.

    2. The Circle Undone. I really liked the prologue the first time we played it, but I agree that it is not really enjoyable when re-played. Even with that ... Witches and ghosts and a clandestine organization. Bring it on!

    3. The Path to Carcosa. This was a hard decision. This campaign could have been ranked 1 or 2, as many have done. I suppose it is just the elements of the story/setting that I enjoy more with the first two.  

    4. The Dunwich Legacy. This was my favorite for a long time. I still like it, but as has been said by others, it is starting to show its age, I guess, but aren't we all.

    5. The Dream Eaters. What? Why is this ranked so low? Simply that it is only two half campaigns. I really like building my investigator over the long haul. I feel cheated that I only get 4 scenarios with each one in this cycle.

    6. Night of the Zealot. It is a great introduction to the game, but as a campaign is even shorter than each half of Dream Eaters.


  15. I live in the western part of the U.S. with our family spread across several states, including Washington. So far no infections. Working from home is my norm, so that is not new. However, being a lifelong major league baseball fan, my world is sadder without it starting up in the next few weeks. Happily, I have Arkham Horror LCG and this community to keep my interest and my spirits up! Thank you!

    I like the idea of a signature scenario (nod to Soakman) for an investigator. That would be cool to play the first time you want to try a new investigator, or even with an old favorite. I could see it fitting in as a stand-alone that you could insert (probably at the beginning) into a campaign to "introduce" the investigator and backstory. I would buy that.


  17. This is a great conversation. I am glad you asked the question. It is really helpful hearing what others are doing. Besides not using the Taboo lists, we don't really have any house rules, although we have done some temporary ones, like relaxing the deck restrictions for a campaign, etc. 

    Although not a rule, one thing I have really enjoyed has been creating Permanent Asset cards for our use. I have a card, I call it Meticulous Preparation, which allows you to draw 10 cards to create your opening hand, choosing 5 and shuffling the rest back. No mulligan is allowed. It costs 3 XP. Another one I just made and haven't tried yet is "Favored Tool" which costs 2 XP (but is Exceptional, so really 4), and allows you to name a favored tool (an Item Asset in your deck) and write it in the campaign log. Then, each scenario after that, you may begin with one copy of that Asset under your investigator card, and treat it as though it is in your hand. "Never leave home without it." ;)

    This game is great fun and lends itself to customization very well.

    I like the sound of that. I like the larger, more complex scenarios, even if it takes two sessions to play. The more choices the investigators have to make, i.e. the more the story branches in different directions, the more re-playable the scenario. There are new surprises when you choose a branch you haven't followed before.
